Background: A mailing list server is an eMail "retransmitter" or publisher,
able to perform a variety of mailing functions for a list of subscribers. Among other things,
it can send eMail to a group of people who share the same address the same way
photocopies of an original can be sent thru the mail.
Thus one message sent to a Listserver address is retransmitted to all subscribers of the
group. SLOVAK-WORLD was the first genealogy listserver operating out of Eastern
Europe, with the exception of a few in former East Germany.
While primarily using English, there are a few messages in Slovak. Many Slovak words,
terms and customs are translated or explained. The location of town records in a regional
archive is often given and at Christmas time Slovak heritage is expressed in terms of recipies
and other cultural traditions. Several Slovak genealogy experts are also found here.
Duncan Gardiner, C.G. has been the most active of those helping to answer questions in
1995.
This genealogy listserver is operated at the Forest Research Institute of Slovakia at
Zvolen. It began in April 1995. As of the fall of 1995 it had about 90 subscribers. About
one quarter of them lived in Slovakia. Miro Gecovic, the friendly system administrator,
stated that 189 were subscribers in his Christmas greeting of 1995.

that the Forest Research Institute of Slovakia (FRIS) had placed a
*Slovak-World HomePage* on the web (WWW) at http://www.fris.sk/Slovak-World/
It is an exiting time for persons of Slovak heritage everywhere. New opportunities to
explore Slovakian genealogy, heritage and culture are now being shared by eMail and on the
web.
FEEFHS salutes the initiative and accomplishments of all the staff at SLOVAK WORLD in
Zvolen, Slovakia and welcomes them to the growing number of East European genealogy
