Surname(s): SARFATTY
Region(s): Bitola, Macedonia
Religion: Jewish
The surname SARFATTY has a multitude of possible spellings in English:

( Ts / S / Z ) ( a / e ) r ( f / v ) ( a / e ) ( t / tt ) ( i / y ).

I would like to connect with any and all individuals searching this historical name which comes from the time when the Jews were expelled from Spain at the time of Columbus, in 1492 and before that from Rashi de Troyes (from France). SARFATTY comes from the Biblical Hebrew word Sephardi, meaning from Spain and in modern Hebrew, it is also the word for France, Sepharad.
On my Gold Cousins home page, we have a new area, Clan Gatherings which is for one-surname studies. Our SARFATTY clan is underway and we would like to invite new members. Membership is required, but it is free. We only ask that you post information about your SARFATTY family and what you are looking for.
Important Note: The Clan Gatherings are a closed area, only allowing access to members - many of the members post private information about their family.
My SARFATTY family originates from Monastir, today's Bitola, Macedonia.
The family saga begins with Joseph Isaac SARFATTY and his wife Clara ERGAS, both born and married in Monastir. Their children were: Avram "Albert" SARFATTY (born 02/28/1888), Joseph Abraham SARFATY (born ca 1890), Rebecca SARFATTY (born ca 1891), Raphael Joseph "Philip" SARFATTY (born 10/14/1893), Solomon "George" SARFATTY (born 1897), Mois "Morris" SARFATTY (born 1900) and Sabitai "Max" SARFATTY (born ca 1902).
I would like to make contact with descendents of
  • Joseph Abraham SARFATY: I believe he had a son who was named Isaac "Ike" SARFATY
  • Rebecca SARFATTY: married someone by the surname of Alevy or Alevey or Alvy and had one son, Solomon, before she died shortly after childbirth
  • Solomon "George" SARFATTY: married Estelle ??? and had one daughter, Clarica (born about June 1945). Estelle also had a daughter, Pearl Barouch, by her prior marriage.
  • Mois "Morris" SARFATTY

A more complete family tree may be viewed at my home site, Gold Cousins (click on GOLD FAMILY followed by SARFATTY).

Surname(s): Hadzi Stojcev, Tsarvenkovitch, Stoyanou, Duche
Which Monastir? Bitola, Macedonia
Religion: Greek or Serbian Orthodox
My great grand father's name was Gligori Hadzi Stojcev, his wife's name was Anastasia, last name unknown to me. Their time on earth would have been approx sometime between 1830 to 1900. They had five children:,George born 1871, was my grandfather, Maritsa, Matthew, Fannie and Constantine. George married Lencha Stoyanou, born 1880, and had three children Vasilka, Born 10/28/05, a son birth date and name unknown, died at an early age. George immigrated to the USA approx 1917-19. Upon arrival his last name changed from Hadzi Stojcev to Gligor. Approx 1919 his wife Lencha and daughter Vaslika immigrated to the USA. On 1/7/14 my grandparents had a third child called Dimitri(James). He was my father. Maritsa married a man with a last name of Duche. They had two children:Polixeni, birthdate unknown and Nicholas, born 12/19/03. This branch immigrated to USA, date unknown. Maritsa, who never became a US Citizen, eventually returned to Monastir to live out her last days. A neighbor took care of her(she died in the mid 1940's)with the finacial support of her children, who remained in the USA as citizens. Matthew, birth date unknown married Peraskevi last name unknown, and had two children Anastasia birthdate unknown and Thomas, birth date unknown. Anastasia married a man, name unknown and had one son named Niko, birthdate unknown. Niko became an orphan when he was about the age of 4 and was taken in by his Uncle Thomas. Thomas married Nada, birth date unknown. They had two children: Zane and Beti. Thomas and Nada's last known address was ul. Lenjinova 42 Bitola, Yugoslavija. I think Thomas and Nada would have been approx 55-65 years of age in the early 70's. This is assuming they were born around the same time of Vasilka, George's daughter. I don't believe Thomas and Nada are alive, but I do believe Zane and Beti are. However, I don't have an address. These are the members of my family I WOULD LIKE TO LOCATE AND MAKE CONTACT WITH. Stojanovski Dimce or his surviving family, last known address ur. Dame Gruev br. 52 tola,Yugoslavija, could possibly have information on Thomas and Nada's family. Fannie married a man named Ian Tsarvenkovitch and had four children: Sotire, Dora, Irene, and George. This is the only info I have on this branch how ever, I believe Fannie's children had children. Constantine immigrated to the USA and I have made contact with the surviving members of his branch. I would be very greatful for any information that would leed me to any living members of my family.

Which Monastir? Macedonia, Greece
I am searching information about my father's family - EHAT or SARRAFZADE EHAT - established in Salonica till 1912. They were Moslems when they left, but may have been Sephardic at the origin (Conversos ?). Can anyone help me to trace the Ottoman registers concerning Salonica? Any kind of information would be highly appreciated.

My Grandfather Avram Sarda was born in Tire, Turkey. Died 1941. His mother tongue was Greek, and was said to be from Crete. Maybe his father Josef Sarda (or Sadras) or his grandfather Efrayim were. I want to learn who first came to Turkey from Crete and when they came to Crete.
