Slovak and Czech Archives
by Duncan Gardiner, C.G., A.G.

eMail message to FEEFHS from Duncan Gardiner, C.G.: "Here is an updated archive address list. I have also added the Czech Embassy website address and an address where the form to make genealogical search requests to the Slovak archive administration can be obtained. I am sorry we cannot include diacritical marks on these addresses as posted on the Internet web at this time."

The Slovak and Czech archive systems do ancestry research for those who inquire by mail. They have a great deal of experience and are good at it, by and large. The charges are not cheap any more, but they are not excessive. The inquiries used to be handled by the Czechoslovak Embassy, but this is no longer the case, both because the two countries are separate and because the procedure has changed. However, you might want to write to the Czech or Slovak Embassy for information about the archive services. If you want to write directly to the archive service in each country: If you are at all doubtful about which archive will have the parish registers for the ancestral town in question, you should write to the archive administration in Prague or in Bratislava and they will make sure the appropriate archive handles the request. In case you do know which archive can help you, the list of addresses and telephone numbers is given below.

Both archive systems are used to mail inquiries and have someone who can deal with inquiries in English. But make it easy: Write in clear, short sentences and make clear requests.

Slovak state regional archives. (If you write directly to them, the first line of the address will read: "Statny oblastny archiv" and the last line will read "Slovak Republic" or "Slovakia".) The Slovak Central Archive may also have materials pertinent to family history. Its address:
Statny ustredny archiv SR, Drotarska cesta 42, 817 01 Bratislava; telephone 311 321.

County and Special Archives; There is a county archive system as well. The 35 county archives (okresne archivy) are not as well funded and many materials have not been catalogued. Uncatalogued materials are not available for study. In addition, Slovakia has a number of special archives, such as the Comenius University Archive in Bratislava, the Archive of Matica Slovenska in Martin, the Mining Archive in Banska Stiavnica. The Archive Administration in Bratislava will be able to supply information and addresses.

In each case below, the first line of the address will be "Statni oblastni archiv" and the last line will be "Czech Republic".)

Czech Regional Archives: Jewish Records: The Statni ustredni archiv, Karmelitska 2, 118 01 Praha 1 (Mala Strana), telephone 531 551, holds the Jewish vital records.
