I am looking for information regarding my paternal grandfather
and his immediate family. We have no records of any sibling or
parent of Stephan Johann TONDERA and we want to learn of our
heritage. I have the following information, but have come to a
dead-end and my limitation of Polish inhibits me as well. His
name was Stephan Johann TONDERA born 22 December 1892 at
Borsigwerk, Hindenburg, Upper Silesia. His birth certificate
states The Seal of the Civil Registry and stamped receipt No. M98
for 0.60 mark. His birth certificate is No. 42. Further
research reveals that his parents were Franz Joseph (a known
supervisor at coal mine in Borsigwerk) and Josepha SACHLOD
Tondera, midwife was Frau Sophie Prukop KRZOSKA. Known siblings
of Stephan Johann are Carl born 1886 and killed in WW I fighting
for Germany; a sister of whom we have no information about other
than she became a nun and her name changed to Marie; Thiophil
born 1894 and killed in WW I fighting for Germany who had 2 sons
who both were killed (1 in war and 1 in coal mine.) Family was
Catholic. Hindenburg may have been called Oberschlesien, Germany
(from my aunt's info?) I have received a Genealogical Guide and
Atlas of Silesia by Otto K. Kowallis which has indicated that
Bosigwerk is Polish name of German town of Hindenburg and is
located in District (Kreis) Hindenberg #108 (Polish name of
Zabrze) of County Oppeln of Quadrant 3 p. 79, east of then
Gleiwitz. This is all located in far east Upper Silesia about
18.8 degrees longitude and (50.2) latitude. TONDERA emigrated
from Hamburg, Germany to New York about 5 July 1914 during the
infamous influenza epidemic, as a German Merchant Marine. He
then traveled to Galveston Bay, Texas where he jumped ship and
walked to Waco, TX. He married at Perry, TX to Ottillie Marie
PURSCHE in December 1916. He had 7 children, Elsie Marie, Ernest
Carl, Agnes Elfridea, Annie Olga, Alma Lillie, Steve Ernest, and
Harold Boyd. Stephan was conscripted to the US Army Corp
Engineer on 19 September 1917 and discharged from Camp Travis in
San Antonio, TX on 12 March 1918. He was naturalized as an
American Citizen on 13 November 1922. If you can give me some
pointers on where to go from here, who to write, what Parish,
etc. I would be most appreciative.

My grandfather, Joseph JÄSCHKE (JAESCHKE), Master shoemaker,
and my grandmother, Pauline POHLER, lived at Grottkau, Silesia,
Prussia. All their children were born at Grottkau: Herman, born
1857; Anna Carolina (Nina), born 1861; Bertha Auguste, born 1862;
and Oscar (my father), born 1870. They were Catholic. I
searched all the film available at the FHL for Grottkau,
including the marriages. They were not married in Grottkau. My
grandmother, Pauline POHLER JÄSCHKE may have been from
Weigelsdorf, but when I wrote to the Catholic Parish at
Weigelsdorf, the Priest wrote back and said that the book on
marriages was missing, although he had other record books.
In 1896 Oscar JÄSCHKE, my father, married his first wife in
Strehlen, Silesia. Several years before that time he lived in
Breslau on Ottostr. with his mother and sister, Bertha. This
meant that my grandfather, Joseph JÄSCHKE, died at Grottkau
before that time. During this time my father, Oscar, was an
apprentice learning the furrier trade in Breslau, which was his
occupation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until his death.
In 1902 my father, Oscar JÄSCHKE and his first wife, Anna
SCHUBERT, came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin without their three
children. Oscar's sister, Bertha, followed in the same
year bringing his three children. My grandmother, Pauline POHLER
JÄSCHKE, was deceased before they came to the United States.
I would like to locate the parents of Joseph JÄSCHKE and
Pauline POHLER. The location of the Apprentice and Guild records
for both Breslau and Grottkau would be helpful.

(Lutheran)
My ancestor information is deduced from entries in a "Stammbuch"
that accompanied him on his migration from Prussia to
America.
Greatgrandfather Hugo BEIL was born September 1830 at Guhrau,
Silesia (Gora, Poland). Baptism was recorded in military
kirchenbuch. Father was described as "Gendarmen Beyl," and entry
stated full information in Civil record. About 1855 Hugo married
Anna Barbara HINZ, born 1834 at Koenigsberg, Brandenburg. Two
daughters were born in Stettin: Hulda Anna baptised 1858 and
Elizabeth born 1860. In November 1861 family emigrated via
Hamburg to New York. In 1868 they moved to St. Louis, Missouri,
where they resided permanently.
"Stammbuch" entries indicate the following: Hugo's mother was
named Hulda KRETSCHMER, born circa 1803 and grew up at Breslau
(Wroclaw). She had two siblings, Eleanor and Rudolph, also of
Breslau. Hugo had a grandmother named Henriette BEIL and an
uncle Rudolph BEIL at Hirschberg. A search of Breslau
parish records has not prodced a marriage record for Hulda
KRETSCHMER and (?) BEIL. I have two goals: (1) learn more about
Hugo BEIL's ancestry and (2) find descendants of his relatives.
Any and all suggestions are most welcome.

I'd like any kind of information--siblings, ancestors, etc.,
available on the following families, and could provide more
detail than listed here: DREINERT, HERBST, KLEIN, TIX (may be
DIX), TAUBER, ENDE. These are names from villages in Lower
Silesia, vicinity Waldenburg/Walbrzych. All were probably
Evangelical Lutheran. Most information is from my mother's family
record book; some it off the Web. I'm particularly interested in
DREINERT, a relatively rare name apparently--there are only about
40 or so in Germany today, some of which are my immediate family.
My mother is a Dreinert, born in the Ruhr from Silesian
immigrants. Her father was Julius DREINERT, born 1887 at
Nesselgrund near Waldenburg. Her mother was Clara Marta HERBST,
born 1887 at Dittersbach near Waldenburg.
Her paternal grandfather was Johan Gotthelf DREINERT b.1833 in
Steingrund near Ölse / Oelse. Her paternal grandmother was
Johanna Karoline KLEIN, born 1843 at Wäldchen, baptized same
year at Charlottenbrunn (she was illegitimate, mother was Maria
Rosina KLEIN). Her paternal great grandfather was Johann
Gottfried DREINERT (no dates or village) who was a Haussler and
Garnhandler; paternal great grandmother was Anna Maria ENDE (no
information). My mother's maternal grandfather was Ernst Paul
HERBST, born 1861 at Dittersbach, baptized that year at
Waldenburg. He was a "Lehrhauer"; maternal grandmother was
Ernestine Pauline TIX (maybe DIX) born at Ölse bei Striegau
(baptized 1863.) These two were married 26 December 1886 at
Ölse.
My mother's maternal great grandfather was Heinrich Gustav HERBST
born 1833 at Langwaltersdorf, died 1915 at Dittersbach. His
father's name was Carl Gottlieb; maternal great grandmother was
Caroline Ernestine TAUBER born 1837 at Zirlau bei Streigau, died
1916 at Dittersbach. Her father was Carl Tauber; mother Anna
Rosine ?. I have also found one DREINERT in the Gluckstal Colony
archives. He is listed as a Prussian citizen, Paul Dreinert
married to Emma PREISS, living at Bergdorf. The listing records
only the birth of their son, Arthur Albert Otto, born 26
September 1885. Separately, there is a death listing of Olga
Florentine DREINERT, died 3 February 1879, at age 3 yrs., 3 mon.,
15 dys., probably at Bergdorf, born at Lodz.
In my Web searches, I have found two present-day DREINERTs in
Poland: Barbara DREINERT, author of a technical article at a
university in Gliwice, and a Krzytof DREINERT, listed on a
discussion group, but whose eMail address is no longer connected.
Would love to have contact with these Dreinerts and find how they
are related.

August Joseph DOBSCH was born 12 February 1864 to Joseph DOBSCH
and Anna (Annie) SELTZER or STELZER at or near Gross-Peterwitz,
Kreis (County) Neumarkt, Silesia (Schlesien), Prussia. He had
the following brothers and sister; Joseph DOBSCH, Paul DOBSCH,
Reinhold DOBSCH, and Auguste (Augusta) DOBSCH. I have searched
numerous films at LDS for this area of Silesia and have found
DOBSCH's born, baptised, married and died during the 1600s and
1700s, however I can not find a link between my ancestors and
them. Please help me locate their ancestors.

We are searching for any information on the name Dupilka. My
grandfather Theodor DUPILKA who emigrated to the USA in 1906.
The only information we have is that he indicated that he came
from Silesia, was born in 1881, at one time served in the
Austrian calvary, spoke Polish and Ukrainian and was Roman
Catholic. His brother Michael, born in 1887, emigrated to Canada
in 1912. We have contacted some of the 30 odd Dupilka's in the
USA and it appears that there are probably three families there.
It appears there is only our family in Canada. We have located
one family in Slovakia which are related to one of the USA
families and they are the only one that they know of in Europe.
I have checked the available phone listings in Europe including
Germany and there is no record of the name. We would appreciate
any information or direction to further research our family.

My grandfather was Karl-Carl Gottlieb SCHOLZ, born 30 October
1875. My great-grandfather was August J. SCHOLZ, born 4 February
1853 at Guhrwitz (location name changed in 1937 to Burgweiler),
kreis Breslau, province of Schlesien (Silesia), Germany. My
great-grandmother was Caroline JANKE (ne SCHOLZ), born 27
September 1848 at Guhrwitz. My great-great grandfather was
Gottlieb SCHOLZ, born Unknown, Place: Unknown. My
Great-Great-Grandmother was Rosine A. TROWE (ne SCHOLZ), born
Unknown, Place Unknown. I am trying to locate birth records,
baptism, death records, or other family members from this area. I
am also seeking information leading to other family members I may
not be aware of.
KESSEL, Donald E.
eMail address; meccacol@jps.net
I have been trying to determine my Grandfather's parents names. I
would appreciate any help that you can give me. Reinhold E.
KESSEL was born 13 October 1838 and died 24 August 1910. His
birth Place was Klein Weschutz or Klein Ujeschutz (name hard to
read could be misspelled), Schlesien (Scheisen), Prussia,
Germany. He was discharged from the German Army Reserves in 1860.
His papers issued in Breslau to leave the country say he is bound
for Chicago. The date was hard to read but it appears to be
1860. On 12 December 1893 he became a naturalized citizen at
Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

I am looking for any information about Johann David WOBUS. He
was born October 1801 at Gorlitz, Schlesien. He married Sophie
Emilie HEINIMANN in 1837. The only other fact I have is that he
is next listed in Liestal, Canton Basel, Switzerland.

I am searching for Eduard Hillert, born at Koenigsberg, Poland
(now Chojna) in 1884. He married Ida Wanda BUCHHOLZ in 1908.
She was born 1884 at Oschersleben, Germany. Eduard was orphaned
at age 4; and emigrated from Bremen to USA in July 1911. Ida had
a brother Otto BUCHHOLZ who was alive in 1948 living at
Beckendorf, Germany; two sons Heinrich and Otto. Ida emigrated
to the USA in October 1913 and traveled with daughter
Natalie.
Eduard and Ida are my grandparents.
NOWAK, Judy
eMail address: JLDN43@aol.com
I am trying to trace my husband's family. Does anyone have any
information on a Carl / Karl NOWAK dating back to pre-1841 or a
George NOWAK, born 1841?. These Nowaks came from Klein-
Friedrichstabor, Silesia, Germany. Also I am searching
for the POSPISCHIL family, Paul or Sophie dating around 1849.
The POSPISCHIL family lived at or near Tschermin, Silesia,
Germany. Any help or clue would be greatly appreciated. Many
thanks.

I am looking for a possible link to my Grandfather. My
Great-grandmother's maiden name was FRÜHAUF (FRUEHAUF).
There is mention of a retired Austrian Imperial Colonel by the
same last name and I am waiting for information from someone in
Hamburg that has access to the book that was recommended. My
Grandmother was Friedeke FRÜHAUF (FRUEHAUF), who was married
to a medical doctor in Koenisgberg. My Grandfather went by the
name of Heinrich Von FINKEL, but I suspect this could be a
variant of his name. He was born 18 April 1869 if his burial
records are correct. My Grandfather was related to the Kaiser,
so I think that some record exists. They were Lutheran and if
records exist, would appreciate a lookup if possible. Grandpa
ran away to Canada when he was 11 yrs. old, and then on to the US
where he became a citizen. That is when he dropped the "Von".
I would appreciate any information.

Carl Ernst Robert RUSSMANN was born 28 January 1862 at
Baumgarten, Kreis Ohlau, Schlesien; died 1918 at New York City,
N.Y. Lutheran. His parents were Johann RUSSMANN and Johanna
KIEFERT. They may have died in a cholera epidemic in 1866 and so
Carl was brought up by "foster parents". He emigrated to the
U.S.A. in August 1884. I can't find him.

I am trying to find out what happened to my great-grandparents,
Karl Ernst ROTHE, born 18 March 1851 at Schwerta, Ober Lausits,
Kreis Lauban Schlesien (1937 Schwertburg) today Swiecie Poland,
and his wife Juliane Pauline TSCHIRCH. born 25 November 1858 at
Wunschendorf, Bohmen, Kreis Friedland CSSR. They were married at
Schwerta 15 November 1885 and had 3 sons. My grandfather, born
22 April 1889; Herman, born 1900; and Wilhelm, born 1893.
Wilhelm was killed 5 October 1917 in World War I. My grandfather
and his brother Herman both emigrated to the U.S. I would like
to find out what happened to their parents who remained in
Schwerta. The family was Lutheran. I had been in contact with a
gentleman in Germany by the name of Kurt Michael BEDKERT who was
doing research on Kreis Lauban and he was very helpful, but for
some reason he stopped all contact about 6 years ago. I have 4
books and many pictures about the village of Schwerta written in
the past 10 years by Herr Walter OPITZ, a native of Schwerta who
has been living in Germany since 1946.

Regierung Bezirk Brestein in 23 May 1835. Deceased 21 December
1906. Anna Henriette Bartsch (maiden name Tumm) born 3 June 1843
Ninvunko (never heard of that city either) Kreis Cotsiesen (never
heard of it). Regierung Bezirk Bromberg Germany. Deceased 10
October 1913. Both Ernst and Anna emmigrated to the US and ended
up in Wisconsin. Please let me know if anybody has information

SHELLHAMMER, my grandmother's name is Margaret. Margaret
SHELLHAMMER was born 27 January 1902, emigrated to Amsterdam,
Netherlands around 1922, married Martinus Kuyper in 1924 or 1925.
Margaret emigrated to America in July 1925. I would like to find
information about her parents (Daniel & Anna SHELLHAMMER) and
grandparents if possible, don't know paternal grandparents'

I am researching the LAUPITZ and TREUTLER families from lower
Silesia. My great grandfather, Carl (Charles) Frederick LAUPITZ,
was born 25 September 1819-1821? at Breslau, Schlesien, Prussia
(now Wroclaw, Poland). He married Louisa Henrietta TREUTLER
(Henrietta) circa 1848 probably at Bad Salzbrunn, Schlesien,
Prussia (now Szczawienko, Poland). Louisa Henrietta TREUTLER was
born 28 February 1826 at Bad Sazbrunn. There were eight children
born to Carl and Henrietta. They were: Augusta, born 10 October
1849; Ernestine, born 7 July 1851; Wilhelm (William), born circa
1855; Maria (Mary), born 28 September 1857-1858?; Bertha, born
circa 1859; Pauline, born 14 January 1861; and my grandmother
Anna, born 2 September 1867. All of these children were born at
or near Bad Salzbrunn except for my grandmother, Anna, who was
born at LaSalle, LaSalle County, Illinois. The towns of
Altwasser (now Stary Zdroj, Poland), Konradsthal / Conradsthal
(now Konradow, Poland), and Waldenburg (now Walbrzych, Poland)
have also been mentioned as possible birth places of these
children. Carl and Henrietta emigrated to the United States
departing on the steamership "Borussia" 6 June 1865 from Hamburg,
Germany. They were living at Konradsthal / Conradsthal at the
time of their emigration. They arrived 27 June 1865 in New York.
From the ship's manifest, it listed a one year old child of Carl
and Henrietta's named Anna. We have assumed that this child
died and my grandmother was given her name. Louisa Henrietta
TREUTLER had two brothers and two sisters. Their names were:
Ernest, William, Ernestine, and Pauline. Of the four siblings,
only William TREUTLER emigrated to the United States and that was
in 1854. He died 23 January 1901 at Eau Gallie, Brevard County,
Florida. From William TREUTLER'S last will and testament,
probated 24 January 1901, it lists Ernest TREUTLER living at
Konradsthal / Conradsthal, Ernestine TREUTLER OPITZ (deceased)
from Altwasser, and Pauline TREUTLER WEIGIL (deceased) from
Konradsthal / Conradsthal. We have not been successful at
finding any records of the LAUPITZ or TREUTLER families from the
LDS library since very few Evangelical Lutheran records from
Silesia have been microfilmed. So, any information on the
LAUPITZ or TREUTLER families previous to 1865 would be greatly
appreciated.
