ADLER, Andreas
eMail address: andreas.adler@emnid.tnsofres.com

I am searching for members of the ADLER family from Silesia (Schlesien) -- Stadt Frankenberg, Kreis Frankenstein, Regierungsbezirk Breslau, Provinz Niederschlesien). Anton ADLER, born 30 March 1844 at Dürrkunzendorf, died 27 December 1901 at Frankenberg and his wife, Ida GRO&Szlig;PIETSCH, born 10 August 1851 at Winsau Kreis Glatz, died 30 November 1925 at Frankenberg. BAKNE, Julie
eNail address: BAKNEGGZ@aol.com

I learned of you from an assistant at the local LDS Research Center. She said you may have a message board for churches in the "Prussia" area. I am trying to locate the church / baptismal record for my great-great-great-father Joseph BAUTSCH, born approx 1822. On the 1860 U.S. Census he states he is from Prussia. His father is Martin Bautsch. I do know his brother, Frank, born in 1838 at Breslau, but he may have been the child of Martin and a second wife as there are many years between them. Also, Frank's side of the family was unaware of Joseph's existence until I contacted them. I have a handwritten family history from 1920 that lists all the siblings so I do believe I have the correct family. I feel like I have hit a brick wall with this. I have obtained Joseph's pension file from the Civil War and it does not cite where he was born or his parents. He died six days after returning from the Civil War of typhoid. I cannot locate his grave and believe he was buried on the family farm in an unmarked grave. I have found the farm and 1869 purchase papers in his "widow's" name. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate it.

BOYD, Anne Textor
eMail address: Amtboyd@aol.com

I am looking for descendants of my great-great grandfather, Freidrich Ludwig TEXTOR. He was born circa October 1789 and died at Koln Germany 13 April 1862. His civil death records states he was born at Frankenstein and his military death record states he was born at Guhrau. I do not know who is parents were. In 1815 I found him as a Comptroller in the 14th Division of the Prussian Army at Wesel. There he married Christina Bachmann. They were the parents of twelve children, including: Pauline (1819); Carl (1821); Henrietta (1822); Gustav (1824); Otillia (1826); Wilhelm (my great-grandfather, 1828); Friedrich (1830, died at 10 months). A move that ended at Koln and his assignment to the 15th Division happened at this time. Albert (1832) was born in Luxembourg and then the following children were born at Koln: Joanna (1834); Auguste (1836); Rosalie Amanda (1838); and Hermine Adolpine (1840). Any information about this family would be appreciated.

BURY, Reverand Michael
eMail address: jmbury@recorder.ca

I am trying to locate information of my family. My great great great grandfather was Freidrick Gottlieb Krischke born 12 May 1767 at Beilitz. He was an alderman in the City of Breslau in 1825 and died 1825. His son, Freidrich Heinrich Emil Krischke was born at Breslau on 6 December 1816 and farmed at Woitsdorf near Haynaer. He died 30 April 1880 at Goerlitz. His second wife was Emma Philippi. Their son, George Freidrick Oscar Krischke, was born 22 July 1855. He immigrated to Yorkshire, England and married Mary Robertshaw. Their son, Joseph Emil Rudolph Krischke, was my grandfather. Any additional information on the family would be most welcome.

CLARKE, John R.
eMail address: johnrclarke_ga@msn.com

I am looking for information on the family of Frederick Carl Wilhelm RICHTER, probably from Eresdorff ut. Reichenbach, Silesia, PRUSSIA. He was born before 1750 and we know he was married twice - first to a wife whose name is unknown and from her he had one child that we know of - Carl Frederick RICHTER (born 1769, died after 1833). Secondly he was married to Josepha STEINERT about 1775. They had two children that we know of - Carl Wilhelm RICHTER, Sr. (born 1779; died 1807) and a Lt. August RICHTER (born 1792, died 1817) of the Prussian Army. August died of injuries in 1817, which he probably received in the Napoleonic Wars. I descend from Carl Wilhelm RICHTER, Sr. who immigrated to St. Croix, Dutch West Indies about 1799 where he later married Anna Mariah HOLLWECK, some say of Bergen, Norway.

His son, Carl Wilhelm RICHTER, Jr. was born in 1807 and died at Madison, Morgan county, Georgia in 1884. He changed his name to Charles William RICHTER (after his immigration to Georgia) about 1835. We know he graduated from the University of Bonn in the 1820 and married Anne Eliza POTTER (born 1808; died 1863), daughter of Sir. Arthur POTTER, Governor General of the Dutch West Indies. Charles and Anne Eliza RICHTER are my great-grandparents and they are buried at Madison, Morgan county, GA. We know that Carl Frederick RICHTER contacted Carl Wilhelm (Charles William) RICHTER, Jr. in 1833 requesting that he leave some legacy from his Uncle August's (who died in 1817) will to Carl Frederick's daughters who were then rather destitute. We do not know if he did or not. It seems Carl Fredericks had hit on hard times and his daughters (identified as a Charlotte and a Louise) needed the money. We have a copy of this original letter sent to Carl Wilhelm, Jr., but we do not know what he did in the matter. If you have any information on this family, I would like to hear from you.

FOX, George
eMail address:

My great-great-grandmother, Josepha SCHOLZ, was said to have worked as a nursemaid for "The Royal family of Prussia" at Breslau, Silesia. This was probably somewhere between 1805-1830. Whoever her employer was, he must have been wealthy, because he gave her a gold necklace as a gift. It has some royal blue gold on it, also. Do you have any idea who this ruler might have been? Also, is there any information about Josepha Scholz? Her father was a teacher and author, and he lived at Sholz- Shreibsdorf. I don't have any dates. She married Karl KUSCHEL and they lived at Frankenberg, Silesia. They had four sons, Karl, Gregor, Joseph and Albert, and one daughter Philomena, who was born in 1841 at Frankenberg. Thank you for any help you can give.

HOENISCH, Bruni
7016 Lakeridge Drive, Vernon, Brtish Columbia V1H-1P5 Canada eMail address: hoenisch@junction.net

I am trying to find the ancestors of my husband's grandfather. Karl HOENISCH was born 17 March 1856 at Breslau (Althofduerr ?), Silesia, Germany; he died 9 July 1940 at Breslau and he is buried at Domslau (Breslau). He married Rosina FRIMELT, who was born 30 August 1856 at Althofduerr ? and died 30 January 1913. It is possible that Karl or his father was called: "von HOENISCH" (nobility) and he may have had to sell his patent of nobility because of debts. According to legend, the family was granted land by Frederick the Great of Prussia. There is also the story that a Hoenisch served under Trenk de Pandur - a general in Maria Theresia's army on the opposite site. I am very grateful for any information. Thank you.

KUEMMERER, Ernest

(Roman Caatholic)

I am researching the surnames HAMMER and HAMMER von HAMMERSTEIN from Gryfice, Poland (or, as previously known - Greiffenberg, Germany). My grandfather was Gustav HAMMER who was born at Greiffenberg in 1864. His father was Paul HAMMER; no other information is known about him. His mother was Amelia SCHOBER, born in 1825 and died at Budapest Hungary in 1900. He had two sisters, Josefina Angelotti, born in 1861. No information is known about his sister Paula Hotingue. Between 1864 and 1900 the family name changed from HAMMER to HAMMER von HAMMERSTEIN. My great Grandmothers death notice in 1900 reflects this name change. It reads, in German, "Amalie Hammer von Hammerstein geborn Schober, Eisenbahn-Unterehmers-Witwe", which translates to a "widow of a railroad industrialist". My question is how did he obtain the "von Hammerstein" title and why? Could someone give me directions on how best to research church records in Gryfice / Greiffenberg Poland? The family was Roman Catholic.

LOMAX, Mrs. Phyllis
email address: phi602@home.com

I am trying to trace my ancestors, namely Henry Charles von NASCHKE, born at Breslau in 1826. He married Pauline / Paulina HEISLER, also from Breslau, born 1839. Henry was my great-grandfather. He became the Mayor (Burgermeister) of Breslau in about the 1850's, then immigrated to the USA (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and my grandfather was born there in 1858. I have been trying to find out if there are any other Naschke's there or any records that I could have access to. I would be most grateful just to hear something.

PORTER, David
eMail address: david.porter@lmco.com

We are trying to trace our family. I have listed what we think we know below. Any sugestions on where to direct our efforts would be appreciated. Alfred John LINDNER was born in Germany 16 April 1887. He immigrated to the United States just before World War I. We believe we have found an Ellis Island entry record for him. It that shows he had been a resident of "Forsheim" (which is probably "Pforzheim") and arrived 25 October 1914 at the age of 27, but that may have just been where he mustered out of the service. He had served on a ship in the German Navy as an "engineer" and may have received some sort of medal. In the family files, there is a picture of a man in a motorized wheelchair who addresses him as "Bruder" and signs his name Hermann. There are several pictures that reference Liegnitz (now Legnica, Poland) with no names or writing. After arriving in New York, Alfred is next seen in Spring of 1917, married to a woman in the San Francisco Bay area, living at Pinole, California, and working for the Oleum refinery. This is all we know so far. Any assistance would be appreciated.

REICHELT, Carolyn
eMail address: lcreich@wcta.net

It looks like there is a wealth of genealogical information on Silesia available through your website and links. Do you know whether Jewish marriages are included in Die Eheschliessungen in der Schlesischen Provinzialblattern (1785-1849)?
Webmaster's Note: It is hard to tell since no religion is listed and you give no specific persons or surnames to look for.

I am asking for help in searching our Silesian ancestors. All we know is the following: Our grandma, Hulda Ernestine Johanna TRENKLER was born at Marklissa, Kreis Lauban, on 26 October 1898. Her father, Gustav Trenkler, owned a workshop as a cooper foreman at Marklissa. Her mother's name was Hedwig SEIFFERT. As far as we know, she was born at (or near?) Danzig / Gdansk, where one of her brothers owned a grocery store in the early years of the 20th century. The parents of Gustav Trenkler lived at Marklissa, too. Their names were Wilmelm Trenkler and Auguste RIEDEL. Gustav Trenkler had one sister, named Selma, who married a unknown person who's family name was ENDERS in Saxonia. Mit freundlichen Grüßen.

I am searching for my SILESIAN ANCESTORS that immigrated in 1905 and 1908 to Nebraska, USA. I already was searching on the ONLINE CENSUS LISTS of Nebraska, 1920, but there are just a few counties online, and I didn't find them. Is there a possibility to get information whether they are listed in the other counties? The two people are my great aunt and great uncle, sister and brother of my Grandma, which all were born at Hockenau / Liegnitz in lower Silesia. Unfortunately my mother just remembers the maiden name of her aunt: PAULINE SCHOLZ, born 1886, married in Nebraska to an Irish immigrant, a daughter named Eleanor, and probably died in the 1940's of breast cancer. The other is GUSTAV SCHOLZ, born 1882,, married (name unknown), three children, probably died during a tornado (about 1930) in Nebraska. Thank you for any answer

I am searching my mothers' ancestors born in "Silesia". My great great-great-grandfather, Karl HINC, arrived on the territory of the modern Belarus about 1810. One of his sons, named also Karl HINC, was born in 1925 and all his life lived in the town of Lida (modern Grodno Region). He had 7 children - 4 girls and 3 boys. Any information will greatly be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

VLAANDEREN, Mike
email address: vlandren@tpg.com.au

I have been researching my mother's family tree and I have been able to search back to 1833 to my great-great-grandfather, J. Gottlieb PRATSCH (born 1833). It is believed he came from Silesia and immigrated to Norway where he married Ingeborg Jakobsen (born 1832 at Christania, Norway). They had 2 children: Karl Hendrik Johan Pratsch and Charlotte Pratsch. Karl and Charlotte were born in Arendal Norway, Karl on 2nd May 1863 and Charlotte in 1866. Karl immigrated to Australia and married a Norwegian girl, Inga Hansine GRONVOLD (her family came to Australia in 1871) and they had 1 son named Leonard Stanley Pratsch. As I can't read or speak German it is difficult for me to get any information prior to 1833. Yours sincerely.

WOHLFAHRT, James L.
Texas, USA
eMail address: jdwohlf@txucom.net

I am searching for the ancestors of my grandfather, Paul WOHLFAHRT, born 9 October 1859 at Strehlen. He immigrated to the USA (from Bremen to Baltimore) 26 October 1882 on the ship "SS Salier". He was in the Prussian Army and had a brother, Reinhold / Reinholdt G. WOHLFAHRT, born 22 January 1862 at Strehlen, who immigrated to the USA (Bremen to Baltimore) on 12 June 1881 on the ship "SS Leipzig". Ship manifests don't give much information. I am looking for leads to church, military, emigration requests, or other records that might lead me to these roots. Thank you.

ZOELLER, Jack
eMail address: jzoeller@atlanticare.com

I am searching for Silesian birth and marriage records for two brothers: August ZOELLER and his wife Maria, and Friedrick W. ZOELLER and his wife Pauline - who emigrated from Aschitzau, Kreis Bunzlau, Niederschesien to Alden, Erie County, New York in 1856. According to their ship passenger list, the family name may have been ZOELLNER; however the name appears as ZOELLER in naturalization and other records in New York and has survived without the "N". Portions of three other families from the same village of Aschitzau (population 500) crossed on this same ship: SCHEIBE, CONRAD, and ZAECKEL. The children of August and Maria ZOELLER who accompanyied them to the US were daughters Auguste and Ernestine and sons Friedrick and Ernst (later called Charles). Based on their church affiliation in New York, I believe the ZOELLER family would have been members of the evangelical parish of Thommendorf, Kreis Bunzlau. SCHEIBE was probably the maiden name of the wife of August or Friedrick ZOELLER. To clarify these relationships, I would appreciate any advice on locating the archive holding the Evangelisch Kirchenbucher for Thommendorf. Can anyone provide an eMail or regular mail address that I should contact? For those interested in German names, ZOELLER / ZOELLNER is derived from the word for "toll collector" or "customs man". Fittingly, the two towns of Aschitzau and Thommendorf (where the ZOELLER family lived and went to church) are connected by a small bridge over the River Queiss (about 15 miles northwest of Bunzlau). This river formed the boundary between Upper Lusatia and Lower Silesia in the 17th century (at least). Does anybody know the time frame and circumstances under which the German population in this region began to take on last names?
