BAGLEY, Larry H.

(ROman Catholic?)

I would appreciate any information on Jacob MACIOL and his spouse Maria BRESCH MACIOL. Both were born about 1813 at Guttentag, Prussia (now Dobrodzien, Poland). They married about 1837 in Prussia, probably in a Roman Catholic Church. They were of German extraction. They both immigrated to US through the New York City POE (Port of Entry) about 1 July 1858, bringing about 8 children with them. They settled in Franklin county, Missouri, near the town of Washington, Missouri. "Word of mouth" is that they came from Silesia, but no hometown was ever recorded.
Webmaster's Note: I know of no records available from Guttentag as they do not appear under Guttentag in the FHL Catalog. The Polish archives for Dobrodzien (woj. czestochowskie) show only civil registration from 1874 on for a decade or so. Sorry about that. I know of no other sources to help you other than this SILRL posting.

BONGE, Herbert
eMail address: winterhwk5@msn.com

I am looking for information on Carl (Charles) Julius Leopold von BONGE, born at Leignitz, Silesia, Prussia in 1799. He immigrated to America, arriving at Cincinnati, Ohio, about 1828-1831 and married in 1831 to Catherine WILD. They moved to Sugar Creek township, New Palistene, Indiana. He died in 1879 at Marion county, Indiana.

This note was sent to me by my Aunt Martha POSNER JOHNSON about 1986 and I just noticed that at the bottom she has some Silesian genealogy. My great-grandfather, Carl August Posner, was born on 9 March 1840 at Waldenburg, Schlesien, Preufsen. I'm having a little trouble reading her old English spelling - she makes her E's two different ways. My great-grandmother, Louise Paulilne KULMS POSNER was born 6 February 1847 at Krihn(m)ern ( ), Kreiss Striegan, Schlesien, Preussen. They were married at Waldenburg, Mocomb county Michigan and they had 10 children - 2 died as infants. August Carl Posner, the oldest son, married at Shyboygan Wisconsin and later moved to New Orleans Louissiana and Owned National BlowPipe Co. Apparently his accountant obsconded with the money and August killed himself. I can find nothing about him or the some of the other children as they scattered all over. I do have some more information if you are interested, My great-grandfather was an undertaker. There is more - let me know if you want it. Any help you can give to me will be appreciated. I do know that the part of Prussia they were from is now a part of Poland.

CURRIE, Melissa
eMail address: currie@gvec.net

I am looking for info on Johann Christian Gottlieb LASSIG and his son, Adolph Gustave LASSIG. The father, who went by Christian, was born 9 December 1831 at Schlesien. Adolph was born 15 September 1870. They immigrated to Texas in 1882 on the vessel "Donau" from Bremmen. Later, a brother and two sisters of Adolph's also immigrated to America. His siblings were William, Pauline, and Ernestine. A third sister, Augustine, stayed in Silesia because she had married.

I am looking for information on my grandmother's family. I have come across her birth certificate. Her name was Anna Bertha SCHOLZ, born 22 February 1881. Hre father was Hermann Scholz, a master harness-maker, religion protestant, and her mother was Ernestine Scholz, maiden name BURHELT. She was born at Meffersdorf, the District of Lauban. The place of registration was Wiganorthal. It looks like this area is now in Poland. Any information, or ways that I could research her ancestors or later generations of this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Several months ago, having been notified of a serious deterioration of my health, I started a research of my family history. In my distress, unable to travel and completely new to both Internet and genealogy, you kindly offered me your help. In spite of all difficulties, I have found the venture most rewarding, having discovered the riches of information and knowledge available today to researchers, thanks to eminent genealogists and historians, to dedicated webmasters and staff members, and thanks to mostly anonymous, remote but close by heart, friends. It has been my privilege to correspond with many of all those. I am now reaching an appropriate point to put an end to my efforts, mainly for personal reasons. Within my limitations, I doubt if I can obtain more than what I have at present. I want now to devote myself to writing in an orderly and noteworthy way, for my progeny. My essay will hopefully include my wife's Ruth childhood in Berlin until the "Kristall-Nacht" and our Israeli epic. In the following lines, I am availing myself of your attention to summarize what I consider as most credible, pertaining to about 200 years of my family's history in Poland. I shall thankfully welcome your comments, advice or additional data.

In 1772, 1793 and 1795, there were three Partitions of Poland. In those last decades of the 18th century, political and military instability prevailed in Central Europe, and hundreds of thousands of people, from the West and the East, immigrated to Polish territories, due to the individual freedom that was inherent to life in Poland, as compared to other areas of Central Europe. Around 1800 was also the period, for Jews in Central Europe, of adoption or imposition of a family surname. (My family being from the Leviim (Levites), accessing Jewish or synagogue sources could have offered some clues, but, to my knowledge, these are not available to the ordinary researcher. I think a process is going on now to make this data accessible in the future.)

A family trait of political and social liberalism leads me to believe that a Goldblum ancestor of Wroclaw, then Breslau, and his family, left the autoritarian, already antisemitic (then) Prussian regime and moved to an area with a more enlightened tradition. I have reached a fair amount of certitude about my Goldblum family, starting from Breslau in the years 1790-1810 and making its way to the Poznan-Kalisz-Lodz area, settled in Turek in the first half of the 19th century. My grand-father, Mordechai-Henech GOILDBLUM, (born around 1875) is the earliest of my ancestors whose given names I know, but I suspect there was, before him, a lineage of Goldblums at Turek, or at Poznan, or the immediate region. Presumably around 1895-1897, grand-father Mordechai-Henech from Turek married my grand-mother Riwka, nee LUEL, from Blaszki. My father was born at Turek in 1898, and after him came five brothers and six sisters. The family moved to "western style" Kalisz, probably in 1915-17. In 1920, my father Szlama GOLDBLUM and my mother Dwojra-Reisla (nee SCHLOSS) from Zdunska Wola, married at Berlin, but settled at Kalisz, where my sister Bina was born in 1923 and I in 1926. In 1930-31, father, mother, my sister and myself left in Kalisz our large and lively family, and emigrated to Roanne, France.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any data on the family's route from Breslau, now Wroclaw, to Kalisz. Indexing is not as yet available, to my knowledge, for Wroclaw, Poznan or Turek, and still partial for Kalisz. Before ringing down the curtain over my research, I am asking you kindly to check whatever sources you might have access to - genealogical studies, archives, Jewish records (we are Levites), the Turek Yizkor Book, official records, census lists, etc., and, if possible, confirm or infirm the above route stages. Considering this is probably my last endeavor and request, I WOULD BE PARTICULARLY GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD LOOK ON MY BEHALF IN THE LDS FILMS FOR GOLDBLUM INDEXING IN THE YEARS 1800-1875 IN WROCLAW, POZNAN AND TUREK, OR IN OTHER SOURCES POSSIBLY AVAILABLE TO YOU. My most sincere thanks for your sustained friendliness and sympathy.

GRASSHOFF, Ray
eMail address: rgrasshoff@austin.rr.com

I believe that my American immigrant ancestor, Hermann O. GRASSHOFF (born 24 September 1821), immigrated to America from Naumburg am Bober (now Nowogrod-Bobrzanski, Poland) in Silesia. Naturalization papers indicate that he was a native of "Naumburg," and a later census record indicates he was from "Silesia." In addition, I have information that Heimbert Gustav GRASSHOFF (born 22 June 1762 at Roedersdorf; died 14 December 1835 at Naumburg am Bober) was burgermeister and postmeister at Naumburg am Bober at some point in his life. Also, another record lists a Ludvidocus Heimbertus GRASSHOFF as born at Naumburg am Bober in 1814. Unfortunately, I've been unable to find any additional information about these people in Naumburg am Bober and how they might be related. I'd really welcome suggestions for avenues to search.
Webmaster's Note: 1) Start looking for alternate spellings like Graßhoff (Grasshoff) of your surname. 2) Start looking at Grünberg (Gruenberg / Grunberg), Silesia (now Zielona Göra, Poland) as well as Löwenberg (Loewenberg / Lowenberg) - now Lwówek Slaski, Wroclaw, Poland. According to the Die Eheschliessungen in den Schlesischen Provinzialblättern (1785-1849) (listed below), a Luise Wilhelmena SCHIEBEL (from Grünberg) married a Graßhoff (who was a court official from Löwenberg) shortly before 10 May 1831. 3) Check the Roman Catholic or Jewish records on (FHL microfilm) for Löwenberg; 4) Check the individual indexes to each and every court record (4 FHL microfilms covering 1747-1848) for Grünberg);

5) There are at least 2 listings for Grashoff in America (later in the 19th century) in the surname section of the FHLC (LDS Family History Library Catalog) and 6) Have the IGS do a surname search for your surname in the German CD-ROM telephone book (for a few dollars), getting name, telephone number and address and then 7) write short letters to each of them to identify the family genealogist. That should get you started. See the FHL Microfilm page here for details on how to access them.

HARTWIG, Roslyn
Australia
eMail address: ellros@intemora.net.au

(Lutheran)

I sent a previous message in February or March but probably neglected to put all my information on it. 6 of the 7 children of Chrisoph and Elisabeth HARTWIG immigrated to Port Adelaide South Australia, Australia from 1855 onwards (Lutheran). They came from Sawade, Silesia, near Gruenberg (now Sawada Poland) but one son remained behind. His daughter married Constantin JAROWSKI and their descendants later immigrated to Charlottenburg, Berlin. Elisabeth Hartwig also immigrated to Australia in 1866, presumably after her husband Christoph had passed away. Johann Christoph Hartwig, born approximaately 1790-1800 married Anna Elisabeth, born approximaately 1798. Their children: 1. Unknown son; 2. Johann August (1823-1898), married 1. ? , 2. Johanne,. married Caroline Kowald (1831-1901); 3. Anna Dorothea (1827-1877), married Johann August HARTWIG (a stonemason and a cousin) (1829-1894); 4. Johann Christoph (1831-1918), married (in Australia) Mary FOLEY (1840-1903); 5. Johanne Ernstine (1832-1894), married a. ? SCHUBERT, b. Friedrich WENDT (in Australia); 6. Johanne Christiane Auguste (1837-1926), married (in Australia) Johann August HOHNBERG; 7. Carl Friedrich (1841-1882) married (in Australia) Anna Rosina WALTER. I have all the descendants in Australia of these 6 children but would like to find their ancestors in Germany / Poland as well as the relatives of the son who remained behind in Germany. I have met his great-great grandson but unfortunately he doesn't know anything about his ancestors as he was brought up in an orphanage after the War (II). Thankyou for any assistance that anyone is able to give me.

HASTINGS, Barbara
eMail address: shastings@satx.rr.com

(Protestant and Roman Catholic)

I am looking for any information about my grandparents, Karl HERRMANN and his wife Anna, maiden name BLOCHEL. I can only guess at when they were married from my father's birth date. My father, Walter Herrmann, was born on 15 January 1888 at Kattowitz. He is about the middle child of 15 siblings. I guess that my grandparents were married sometime in the 1870s. My grandfather had a large bakery in Kattowitz, and, according to my father, he was president of the coal miners' union. My grandfather was Protestant, while my grandmother was Catholic. All children were raised in the Protestant faith. I am trying to find out more about my grandparents. It is my understanding that the name Herrmann was somewhat popular in Kattowitz at the time my father grew up there. But none of the Herrmann's are related to my line. I noticed a posting regarding a Gunther Herrmann from 1998, but did not find the text of the posting. Can you help? Thank you.

HENKERT, Gisela
eMail address: gisela.henckert@gmx.de

I am looking for Information of my ancestors: Franz Gustav HENKERT married Rosina ZUKRENT (Rosalie SAKRENT) on 23 January 1860 at Breslau. They had 3 children: a) Friedric August Gustav HENKERT b) Louise Auguste Clara HENKERT c) unknown brother HENKERT. Who can give information on c)unknown brother HENKERT and his family?. We also found Hermann HENKERT (Baumeister Koniglich-Kaiserlicher) in some of our documents. Who can give information of Hermann HENKERT, who lived around 1905 at Gleiwitz (today Gliwice in Poland)?

MILZA, Barbara DOMNIK
Summerville South Carolina
eMail address: Schoney50@aol.com

My paternal ancestors came from Silesia Germany. Of the four surnames I have, none left any paper work stating the town of birth. The only facts I have are dates of birth, and for one family the date and ship of crossing (immigration) to the US. All four grandparents lived and died in the US but whenever place of birth was needed, the documents state "Germany". On your site in "Schlesisches Namembuch" I have found three of the surnames from my family but I am unsure of where to find the complete entry for them. Would the local LDS library Center hold a copy of the book? Is there someone on the List that would be able to do a look-up for me. How would I contract their services? These are the names and birth dates of my ancestors: 1) Samuel DOMNIK, born about 1835, is listed on manifest of the ship "SS Mosel", entering New York harbor on 24 November 1879 at age 55; 2) Julianne DOMNIK, born about 1838, listed on the manifest of the ship "SS Mosel" at age 54 (listed as wife); 3) Jacob DOMNIK born 25 July 1869 (in Germany), listed on the ships manifest as age 22, ocupation weaver; 4) Gottliebe DOMNIK, birth yer about 1849, listed as age 30 and female; 5) Anna DOMNIK, birth date 24 June 1863, maiden name HETTMANN, listed as age 14 on ships manifest; 6) Anna DOMNIK listed as infant born on ship; 7) Marie KLOS, birth date 25 December 1859 at Zwiebrucken ? or Ixheim ?, Germany; 8) Henry John FOLCKE, birth date 11 December 1867 (her husband). Any assistance you could give me in researching these people would be greatly appreciated. In two years I have found nothing on the German side of their lives and would love to fill in the rest of our history. Sincerely.

I am searching for information on my grandfather, Theodor SOIKA (SOYKA, SOJKA) and his family. He was born in 1898 somewhere in Schlesien or Ost-Preussen. Can you help me? And I am also searching for the family of my grandmother. She was born at Penzlin / Waren. Her maiden name was KOCH. The father of my grandmother was Karl KOCH. Can you help me? Thank you very much.
Webmaster's Note: There are 27 females with the KOCH surname whose marriages are recorded in the Schlesien marriage index book Die Eheschliessungen in den Schlesischen Provinzialblättern (1785-1849), but because of the way they are listed (with only the husband's name listed by location), I cannot take the time to search it for you.

I also noticed two SOYKA husbands that married women at the towns of Hirschberg and Landeshut, Schlesien (in 1806 and 1840 respectively). You might want to look to see if the FHL microfilm of records from those locations are helpful in seeking out other ancestors. There are 7 Roman Catholic and Evangelical church record collections and a Jewish one for Hirschberg. For Landeshut there are four Christian collections and one Jewish one. See the FHL Microfilm page here for details on how to access them.

I am looking for relatives of my father's side. The details of my great-grandfather I have are: Karl Wilhelm SCHUBERT, born 29 November 1846 at Kosel / Sagan; died 25 September 1914 at Schlawa. His parents were: Samuel SCHUBERT, born 20 January 1818 at Schirokowa, died 4 July 1859 at Salisch and Anna Rosina GUENTHER, born 20 February 1818 at Lawaldau, died 14 February 1898 at Schlawa. WEST, Cathy

I am trying to trace ancestors from Silesia. Gottfried WEIST and Monika KLEINERT WEIST were married in 1850 at Buchwald, which I think is somewhere near the Riesen Geberge (Mountains). They arrived in the State of Victoria, Australia in November 1855 on the ship "Victoria", with two children - Pauline and Heinrich. Please are you able to help with contacts or web sites in Germany - but English speaking. There seems to a barrier to information from Silesia, and the records seem hard to access. Thank you in anticipation od ssuccess.
Webmaster's Note: In additon to several of the 11 Wiest listings in the FHL Catalog of microfilm and books on the Weist surname, there is FHL microfilm of records from three different Buchwald locations in three different Kries (counties) in Silesia. For information on accessing this microfilm (FHL books do not circulate, don't even ask), see the page on this website.

WILDE, Jennie

(Lutheran)

Can anyone help me with locating the Schnellewalde records or would they have been destroyed during World War II? I am trying to locate the ancestry of my great grandfather, Johannes WILDE, born 1 September 1838 at Schnellewalde (now Szybowice, Prudnik region), Oberschlesien, Prussia. He was married at Detroit, USA to Emegattin Mina ENKE in 1863 after immigrating to the USA on 10 June, 1862 from the port of Hamburg. He died 26 July 1925 at Detroit, Michigan, USA. He was a member of the Lutheran church I believe. I am the descendant of his daughter Theresa Louisa Rosa Wilde. Any recommended genealogies of Wilde's from the USA or that Prussian area would be greatly appreciated.

He had a brother Thomas Wilde (born ???), who also emigrated to the USA, and a brother Martin Wilde born 20 July 1826 in Szybowice (formerly the Prussia town of Schnellewalde), Prudnik area, who also emigrated to the USA. This Martin Wilde was believed to have made the trip to the USA in 1858. I also believe he had a third brother Friedrick Wilde who may have been born in Jekalerenoslanki, Germany. This Friedrick Wilde he had a son Robert, and ten other children. Friedrick Wilde's son Robert was the only one who immigrated to America in about 1909 or 1910. Martin immigrated to White Russia (Hartmans Fabriek, Stadt Lugiens Russland), in 1891. My ancestor Johannes Wilde (born 1838) was last listed in Neustadt in 1862 before leaving for the USA. Someone sent Johannes an obituary newspaper article around 1900 of a Gottlieb Wilde (from Gazorse, near the Russian border) who died in the early 1900s. There also may be a Constantin Wilde who may be a relative of his.
