BEHM, Cindi

(Lutheran)

I am seeking information on Johann Gottlieb BEHM, born in 1823 and married to Wilhelmina SCHULTZ, also born in 1823. Johann BEHM and Wilhelmine SCHULTZ were married at Gross Drensen, Posen on 10 February 1846. They immigrated to the US 4 July 1857 with their three children. The family worshipped at the Trinity Lutheran Church at Riga, Michigan and were very active members there. Records only indicate they had three children born in Gross Kotten, Posen, Koenig Reich Prussia, Germany.

BONNFRED, Mary

(Evangelische Lutheran in U.S.)

I am seeking information on GUSTAV JESCHKE, born at or near Schoenlake on 6 March 1857. His father was Friedrich Wilhelm Alexander JESCHKE, born 9 July 1813 at Selchowhamer, Posen, Preusse; his mother was Wilhelmine SPECHT, born about 1817 at or near Newdorf, Posen; her father was Gottleib SPECHT. I am also seeking information on Mary M. EBERT, who married Gustav JESCHKE, but all I know about her is that she was born in March 1851 in Germany, and died 1916 at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois. After Gustav died, she married a man named HARKER. She is buried very close (but not next to) Gustav JESCHKE, under the name of Mary M. Harker. Gustav JESCHKE and Mary EBERT were the parents of Fred A. Carl JESCHKE, and Amelia JAHN, who were my husband's grandparents. I tried for a death certificate for Mary out of Cook county, but they say it is not available. Evidently when she died they took her back to Iowa for burial. Friedrich JESCHKE was the son of Johann Samuel JESCHKE, born 5 July 1785 at Selchowhammer, Posen, and his wife Anna Elisabeth SPECHT, born 1782-1789 at Newdaz, Preussen, (not sure of spelling on that one), Anna's dad was Johannes Peter SPECHT, born 21 October 1763, Evangelisch, at Landauinpfalz, Stadt, Preussen. Johann JESCHKE was son of Daniel Gottfried JESCHKE, born at Selchowhamer 21 September 1756, and wife Anna Sophie SPELTTSTOESSER, born in Preussen 1753. Daniel JESCHKE was the son of Mattaeus JESCHKE, born at Sawde-Muehle, Posen, Preussen who married Dorothea BUSSE in 1738 at Selchowhamer. Matthaeus was the son of Gottfried JESCHKE, born about 1685 at Sorge, Posen, Preussen and wife Anna Maria WIESE.

I am researching the family of my great-great-grandfather, John Julius SYDOW, born 7 March 1851. I believe he was from Pudavic, He married Wilhelmina BRAUN and he immigrated to Texas circa 1889 to settle a homestead near Brenham. He sent for his pregnant wife and 3 daughters. While the women were en route, he was kicked in the head by a mule and died in1891 in Washington county Texas. John SYDOW had a sister who also settled in Texas, Anna Caroline SYDOW, who married Josef MEINKOWSKY. There was also a brother, William SYDOWm who also may have immigrated to the US. I have information that Anna Caroline may have been born in Niemicozkow, Posen. When Wilhelmina arrived and found her husband had died, she married the man next door, Jacob MEINHARDT, who felt girls were of no use on a farm and they "farmed out" the daughters. On the birth certificate of his daughter Martha, he is listed as being 25 years old in 1884 and his occupation was listed as "estate supervisor". His wife, Wilhelmina BRAUN, (her mother's name was Katherine HEINKLE) was born 22 January 1862 in Posen. She died 19 October 1950. Thanks.

My great-great-grandfather, Wilhelm Christoph ZELLMER, was born about 1810 at Jankendorf, Posen, Prussia. He was married to Justine Auguste MEIER, about 1832-1834 at Jankendorf. Wilhelm and Justine had at least two children at Jankendorf, Louise ZELLMER, born 1835; and Friedrick Wilhelm ZELLMER, born 27 February, 1842. They also had at least one child born at Lebanon, Dodge county, Wisconsin. His name was Julius Gustav ZELLMER, born 07, 1857. I have records of his wife, Justine, coming to Ridgeville, Monroe county, Wisconsin with her brother- in-law, Johann Daniel ZELLMER, but not with her husband Wilhelm. He has just disappeared. Justine is buried at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Ridgeville, Wisconsin, but Wilhelm is not buried there. I am hoping to find someone, at Jankendorf (today Sokolowo, Poland) who can read and write in English to "pen pal" with me, or if someone in Sokolowo could visit the local cemeteries, to see if Wilhelm died at Jankendorf.

FOX, Linda

I am searching for information on Martin KRACK, born 8 April 1821 in Posen, Prussia. Census records indicate that he was born in Prussia, Poland, and Germany; each year is different, but US military records indicate that he was born in Prussia. We do not know who his parents were. US military records indicated that he was married to Gustina STANKA, who died at Exein (Etein), Prussia in 1848. His second marriage was to Caroline FENNER, in a church at Exein (Etein), Prussia, and they were married by Reo Tader. Martin KRACK lived in many places in the US and fought in the civil war. He had a son Lewis KRACK, who was born in the USA in 1859.

I am seeking information on my great grandfather, Theodore Leon FEST, born at Obonik, Posen, in 1844. He served in the Prussian army and immigrated to the USA on the ship "Germania", sailing from Hamburg to New York in 1868. He listed his place of origin as Obonik, Posen. His death certificate names his father as being Frederick FEST, mother unknown. The family occupation was that of baker. An old picture depicts an older FEST relative with the name as Alexander Anasatius Vespanasius FEST, born 1783, died 1872.

HARRIS, Margaret

I am searching for information on my grandmother, Pauline Bertha MALLAST, who was born 2 December 1877 at Nawisk, Posen, Prussia. She came with her family when they immigrated to the U.S. in 1882. Her parents were August Johann MALLAST and Rosina (KUEHN) MALLAST. Both grandfathers were Michael. I know nothing more about this family other then they were Protestant in their faith.

HOFF, Cathy
eMail Address: Search4Family@aol.com

I am searching for information on Julius RAGOSCHKE and his wife, Amalia RENZ (her uncle was Ernst Jacob RENZ of the Renz Circus in Berlin in the 1800's). According to family story, their daughter, Eva Pauline RAGOSCHKE, immigrated to America in 1880 (proven). She sent for her parents, two brothers and a sister in 1885 (proven). The father (Julius RAGOSCHKE) stayed in Germany and died shortly after the family left (unproven). On the 1930 U.S. Federal census, Eva Pauline RAGOSCHKE KADOW lists her place of birth as Posen, Germany, but Germany is crossed out and Poland is written over it. This is a brick wall for us, so any leads would be appriciated.

KELDAHL, Maggie

I am seeking information on Paul John ZINTER, born 14 March 1878 at Debenke, Posen Germany. His father's name was Paul ZINTER, and his mother was Wilhelmine ARNDT.

I am searching for any information on the MEZEL clan and the various other families that married into that family before immigrating to Australia in 1847. Christian MENZEL (born 30 October 1791, died 21 December 1877) was born at Nelka Hauland, Posen. He married (first) 1) Anna Rosina NUSKE at Nekla Hauland and had 5 sons: Johann Gottlieb MENZEL, Michael MENZEL, Johann MENZEL, Willhelm MENZEL and Daniel MENZEL. Christian then married 2) Maria Dorothea RICHTER and had 6 children: Anna MENZEL Elisabeth MENZEL, Pauline MENZEL, Emilie MENZEL, Fredrich MENZEL, (Ludwig MENZEL, the youngest born in Australia). The family boarded the ship "Heloise" at Bremen, Germany and arrived in South Australia on 17 March 1847. I am looking for any connections or any information on the MENZEL, NUSKE or RICHTER families in POSEN.

I am looking for any information on my great-grandparents and their families. Adalbert KOTULSKI was born at Pozham, Poland 15 April 1876, according to a 1920 U.S. Federal census record, which idicated he immigrated to the New York City area in 1903. I know he had two sisters at Pozham who he lost touch with during WW II. His wife, Steuslan (aka Stasha, Sadie) KAPCZYNSKI, was born in 1876 or 1877 in Pozen. The Federal Census said she immigrated in 1904. She had several siblings who came to the US too. Her brothers Vincent and Komish returned to Poland. Several siblings went to Detroit Michigan. Her sister, Martha KAPCZYNSKI, married Joseph LOCKAVITCH, and they had two daughters (Lily and Helen). Her sister, Johanna KAPCZYNSKI, married Walter BERNECKER (aka BERNECKI) and they had three children (Leo, Arthur and Rose) and settled at Carle Place, Long Island, New York.

I've been given some possibilities of birthplaces for my great- grandfather. I was told by a cousin he was born at Kalisch. His name was Samuel HILSCHER, born 1832. Recently a location of a Johann Samuel Hilscher, born 1833 at Maliniec has surfaced. I am unable to locate this town of Maliniec any place, and would appreciate any help you could give me regarding the location. I have done a LOT of map searches....perhaps it was spelled differently? I've also looked at everything that starts with an Mal ..., hoping against hope to get closer. Any help or pointing me in the right direction, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: Maliniec is given as either Höckenberg (Hoeckenberg / Hockenberg) [Lobez powiat, Poland] or Neuvorwerk [Kozle powiat], Poland in Ortsnamenverzzeichnis der Ortschaften jenseits von Oder und Neiße (it covers German to Polish name changes after World War II).

The Kalisch found in the FHL Catalog is under Kalisch (Kries Kalisch, Poznan [now Kalisz, Poland]. Thus I am keeping this query under Poznan because of the cousin's statement. Only you can sort this problem out. To add to your confusion, there are also numerous listings for Kalish as a location in Volhynia in the FEEFHS Website index. Volhynia was a part of former Poland that is now the northern oblast of the Ukraine - and once had many German settlements.

According to Toni Perroni, President of the IGS Pommern SIG, "Maliniec is not in Pommern. It was in Silesia ... for the village of Maliniec, the German name was Neu Vorwerk. Today it is called Maliniec. It was located in Kreis Freystadt in the German Province of Schlesien. Silesia no longer exists. Today it is located in the Province of Zielonogorskie, Poland. Its location is East 15 degrees, 23'; North 51 degrees, 49'. This village is located 1.2 kilometers and 347 degrees from Bergenwald, which is known today as Niwiska, Poland."

"Re the village of Kalisch, the German name was Kalisch. It had an alternate name of Kallisch in 1820. Today the name is Kalisz. It was located in Kreis Berent in the German Province of Westpreussen. Today it is the Province of Gdanskie, Poland. It is located East 17 degrees 47'; North 54 degrees 02'. This village is located 14.5 kilometers and 233 degrees from Berent, which is known today as Koscierzyna. It has a Lutheran Parish located atn Lippusch since 1905 and a Catholic Parish located at Lippusch since 1905. The Standesamt (court district) was located at Dzimianen as of 1905 and there was another Lutheran Parish in 1820 at Berent. Therefore niether were Pomeranian. The Pommern page is located at http://feefhs.org/dpl/dv/pommern.html to find out about the Die Pommerschen Leute Newsletter".

eMail address: fritz.neumann@post.tele.dk

I am searching for information about my great-grandfather, Fritz NEUMANN, who lived in Posen (unknown if town or country). He was in the military and in 1862 he was given a glass, possibly made by the famous Czech glass-maker B. Egermann. It was presented at a private occasion, but the reason is unknown. The inscription on the glass says: "Die Ehre fuer mich, mein Hertz fuer Dich, mein Leben den Koenig und meine Seele Gott. FN Erinnerung um 1862." His wife was given, as an pension, a post office position at the town of Rostarschewo. I have a picture of the house, the old lady and two postmen. A sign on the wall says "Kaiserliche Postagentur." The picture is from about 1890 - 1900. The only exact information I have is that he had a son in 1859 at Landsberg (Brandenburg). Can anyone give me any further information about these persons, the glass or the post office? I will be very happy to hear from you.

OLSON, Cheryl

I am seeking information for August or Ernest RAU, who probably was married to Caroline. The father of August or Ernest (maybe even Caroline) was SAMUEL RAU, who would have been born about 1830-1840. The children of August or Ernest were Emil RAU (born at Sogorof, Poland about 1888) and Paula RAU, born 29 June 1892 at Zamenta / Samenta, Russia / Germany, in the "district" of Der Ryb--apparently a small seaport town close to the Russian border. The county seat was Kalisch and my grandmother (Paula RAU) also mentioned Posen, which I assume was the province. I have found a Samuel RAU married to Caroline GERT in Roots Web. One son was Carl August RAU, born 29 September 1850 at Zu Sufielde / Kr (Kreis) Oberisick Hurzogitin Pozen. I believe this family could be related somehow. Paula RAU left with Martha ZIELEG (SIELEG) from Bremen, Germany in April of 1910 on the ship "Prinzess Alice") to immigrate to America, according to Ellis Island records. Although the record says Russia, she always referred to herself as German.

I am seeking information on the PREUSS Family. Marie Pauline PREUSS was born at Schaeroenz, Posen, Prussia on 12 September 1857. She was the daughter of Christoph PREUSS and Christiane Susanna KUNKEL. I am not sure my family records show that Christoph was actually from Prussia and Christiane was actually from Germany, but probably they were all from the same area. They had 7 other children Martin PREUSS; Charlotte Amalle PREUSS, born 1850; Theodor Reinhold PREUSS, born 1853; Herman Julius PREUSS, born 1854; Paul Peter PREUSS, born 1855; Carl Frederich PREUSS, born 1858; and Antonie PREUSS, born 1859. When Marie Pauline PREUSS was twenty she immigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand following one of her brothers on the sailing ship "Opawa". We think this was Martin, and within a year he had married and immigrated again to the U.S.A. Marie Pauline PREUSS married Heinrich Julius Gerog AHLERS of Hamburg, Germany at Wanganui, New Zealand in 1883.
