I am seeking information about my grandparents. My grandmother,
Agnieszka KUBASZEWSKI, was born at Posen, Posen, and probably in
the year 1868. She was a member of St. Martin's Church. She
married my grandfather, Tomasz ZABLOCKI, in about 1883. My
mother, Leokadya Zablocki, was born in 1888, and was baptized at
St. Martin's Catholic church. The family emigrated to the U.S.
with 3 children about 1898 or 1900. I have been trying to find
some semblance of my family for the past 10 years. Any help
would be appreciated. Thank you.
BIRKHOLZ, William L.
eMail address: debraw@hearth-realty.com
I am researching my great-grandparents August BIRKHOLZ (31 July
1841 - 28 December 1929) and Ernstina Frederika BIRKHOLTZ (29
June 1842 - 20 June 1924). I have conflicting birthplaces for
them. One says Rierzi, Germany and the other says Rietzig, Ger.
Other than that I can only say I have heard that other members of
the family were born in Posen. My great-grandparents both
emigrated to America on the ship "America" from Bremen via
Southampton on 1 June 1868, and settled in the Ripon, Wisconsin
area where my grandfather was born. My father and his brothers
and sisters were born in northern Iowa (Charles City / Rudd /
Rockford). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
BOEHMKE, LaVerne TELLE

I am seeking information about the following: Beate Frederica
Christiane JAEHNIKE was born 6 December 1804 at the city of
Meseritz, Posen, and baptized in the Evangelical Church on 16
December 1804. Her father was Gottfried JAEHNIKE, a master
shoemaker, born about December 1749. Her mother was probably his
second wife, Anna Elisabeth ELSNER. On 11 June 1823 Beate
Frederica Christiane married Joachim SIEVERS / SIEWERS, born
August 1798 at Bremen. The marriage record calls him an
Evangelical Reformed buerger and master shoemaker from
Koenigswalde, the oldest son of Joachim SIEVERS of Bremen.
According to the research of Wilhlem Iwan, they and 2 living
children, became part of the Old Lutheran migration which left
Posen in 1838. But he reports that his information about those
Old Lutherans who left Posen was not complete because he lacked
some of the records. They appear in the U.S. Federal Census for
Buffalo, New York in 1850, and they are also in the records of
First Trinity Lutheran Church at Buffalo. I have not been able
to find their exact date of arrival although I have checked many
passenger lists. I would like very much to find emigration
records from Posen.

I am looking for information regarding Johann M. ZILLMER, born 29
September 1810 at
Schmolowa (near Schneidemuhl), Posen, Germany, who married
Dorothea Elisabeth WITT,
born 1811 at same place. They had 7 children that I know of:
August (born 1835, the only
child not to come to the USA), Wilhelmina Ernestiner (born 1838),
Martin (born 1840),
Stephen Christof (born 1841), Amelia (born 1844), Augusta Justine
(born 1845), and Johann
(born 1851). All of the children were born in the Friedheim
Wirsitz parish area. I would
also like to contact other family members researching this
line.

I am seeking information regarding my great-grandfather Jacob (or
August) BRAUN and his siblings. From church records USA he came
from Losino, Posen (I assume the province) and emigrated,
arriving in the USA in July 1871 and settled at Chicago. He
married Franciska in West Prussia and they had children: August,
Anton, Franciska, Antoni & Augusta. Jacob (August) was born
about 1808. The family was Roman Catholic. There seems to be
some confusion about the town Losino. There is a town Losino now
which is in the area around Slupsk, Poland. I am seeking
information about birth, marriage and death of these
individuals.
BUTTA, Lorraine HANSEN

I am searching for the birthplace and parents of my
great-grandparents: Gottlieb STEINKE, born 28 December 1854 in
Posen Province. he emigrated to the U.S. circa 1873-1875. He
had a brother Wilhelm Steinke and a sister Auguste Steinke, both
of whom came to U.S. (I think at the same time, however not
sure). Auguste reportedly married a man whose last name was ZICK
and lived in Chicago. Auguste DUMKE (married Gottlieb Steinke in
1876). Auguste was born 10 May 1850 in Posen Province. She
emigrated to the U.S. on 14 June 1873 aboard the ship "Mosel"
from Bremen. She had a brother Gustav Dumke who lived at
Goerchen, Posen Province, from about 1893 to at least 1910 and
worked at the sugar mill there. Any information is
appreciated.

My great-great-uncle, Nathan BARNERT (born 30 September 1838,
Zaniemysl; mayor of Paterson, NJ, USA) built a synagogue in
Santomischel (Zaniemysl) in the last part of the 1800's. Does
this synagogue still exist? How would I go about researching
what happened to it? His parents were Meyer BARNERT and Ida
NEWFELT Barnert whose immigration papers say that they were from
Posen. They emigrated to Minneapolis, USA in 1849. Are there
any local records which I would help me learn more about my
family? Did Meyer and Ida have other children? Would it be
possible to find out where they lived in Zaniemysl and through
which port they sailed to America? Any help you can give me
would be very much appreciated.

My great-great-grandparents, Wilhelm ZIEBARTH and Rosina SPANGLER
ZIEBARTH, emigrated to the U.S. in August 1855 on the ship
"Hermine", with their eight children. At least one son-in-law,
my great-grandfather, Mathias FLAKKER, was in the party also. I
have traced them from the time of their arrival in the United
States. Now I am trying find out about them before they left
Europe. All records tell me that they came from Posen, Prussia.
The ship's passenger list only lists Posen. I have yet to try
church records from there. Does anyone know of these names?

I am trying to find the birthplace of my great-grandfather, Anton
Theodor TUCHOLL. He
was confirmed at Lindenwerder, Posen, Prussia on 21 May 1868. He
is the son of August
TUCHOLL and Anna Caroline BARANOWSKI. He was married 25 April
1880 in the
Evangelische Kirche at Samotschin, Kreis Kolmar, Posen, Prussia.
He married Albertine
Ottilie WELLMANN. The couple emigarted to America, arriving 4
January 1881 on board
the ship "SS Bolivia" from Glasgow, Scotland. I would also like
to find out how he got to
Glasgow and from where he originated in Germany.

I am looking for information on my forefathers from Schonlanke
(Trczianka), Posen. My grandfather's name was Gustav Ferdinand
HEDT, (born 1866, died 1942). His parents were Johann Christien

My maternal grandfather's name was Gustav Rudolph SPLETTER. I am
searching for
information about his family, specifically his mother's maiden
name and the names of his
grandparents and other ancestors. His father was Julius SPLETTER
and his mother's
Christian name was Matilda. Julius SPLETTER was born in Posen in
about 1858. Gustav
SPLETTER, his son, was born in Posen in 1881. He and three
siblings, along with their
parents, emigrated to the US in 1887 from the village of
Schniedemine, or Schneideneul, in
the province of Posen in what was then Germany. I'm uncertain
what their religion in Posen
was, but in this country they were Protestant. They settled at
Montevideo, Minnesota, and
my grandfather married and lived the rest of his life at Spencer,
Iowa, where he and his
brother Max were cigar makers.

My grandfather Paul Ludwig Albert KELM was born on 25 March
1877.
He emigrated to the US in 1881; he was born at Putzig (Holland
prov.) Posen (Putzig Hauland?). His parents were Adolf KELM and
Pauline KRUEGER. They settled at Princeton, Wisconsin. I have
looked on old maps of Posen and I found one that had a Putzig on
it. I talked to other persons that had relatives in Princeton,
Wisconsin and they said the same thing, that their relatives came
from "Putzig-Holland Prov. Posen"(?). If anyone can help with my
research, I would be grateful.
KIRBITZ, Kevin

eMail address: kevinkir@home.com
I am seeking information on Martin KIRBITZ (alternate spellings:
KURBUTZ, KURBITZ, KUERBITZ.) According to church records at Zion
Evangelical Lutheran Church at Tawas City, Michigan, where he
settled in the in the late 19th century, Martin KIRBITZ was born
29 October 1851 at Balschewo, Kreis Inowrrazlaff, Reg. Bromberg,
Prov. Posen, Preussen. His father is listed as Matthaeus
KURBITZ. If you have any information which would enable me to
extend my research, please contact me.
KNORR, Bryce and Dagmar
eMail address: bknorr@idcnet.com
The thing that got me (Dagmar) interested in my family history
was my mom's passing in Febuary 1999. I was never aware that so
many of the areas my people were from were leveled and cleansed
after World War II. I started asking my Dad about Wehlau and
Konigsberg, where my mom Ellen Eva TSCHUTTER, born 1918, died
1998, was from. Then he started explaining some of the history
of East Prussia and the Baltic States and it was fascinating and
heartbreaking. In fact the idea that all his life had been
colored by some sort of war or uprising in the East was the one
that caused our family to emigrate.
My father's father was August SIMONEIT (born about 1880, died
1950). His siblings were Antonia, Oskar, and Ferdinand SIMONEIT.
Oskar had a meat-packing business in Greifswald near Stettin. I
do not know the dates of birth but it would have been the 1880's.
They were born in Mittau-Courland as were their parents and
grandparents. The great-grandparents were from Tilsit. Some of
the grandmothers' names were GUSTAFSON and ANSON. Their father
was a printer at Mittau. There was some scandal and he left his
wife and children. Shortly thereafter the mother died and the
children were sent to live with other relatives. Tante Jenny
SIMONEIT's father took in Antonia SIMONEIT and they grew up like
sisters. Later Jenny married a pharmacist named EICHMANN.
Antonia married another ethnic German in Latvia named FRITZBERG.
The boys were sent to a boys school for motherless children in
Mittau and received a good education. It was paid for by a
wealthy uncle. Antonia had two daughters, Zenta and Mara. When
Fritzberg passed away rather young, Antonia married a man named
Arnold LANDOWSKI. They died in Chicago - Uncle Arnold in about
1965, Tante Toni died about 1970. Mara and Zenta are still
living, Zenta in the U.S. and Mara in Latvia.
My father, Alexander Franz SIMONEIT, was born in 1917 at Tula,
Russia. His father August SIMONEIT was an agronomist working for
the tsar at that time. His wife, my grandmother, was Maria
KRUMIN (born 1890's, died 1970's), from Tuckum, Latvia. We have
been told that the family home is still standing, the Simoneit
villa, in Tilsit, as of 1970. We know nothing before Tilsit.
August, Oskar, Ferdinand and Antonia Simoneit went to Riga,
Latvia, since it was a large city with more opportunity and lived
there until the end of World War II. When the Bolsheviks came
in, they were forced out of Riga and were moved to Posen
(POZNAN). Antonia Simoneit-Landowski, her husband, Arnold, and
daughter Zenta KARKLINS (husband Erik, born about 1916) got out.
Mara and her husband were sent to Siberia. Her husband was a
Russian Latvia landowner and officer. They were very patriotic
Latvians so they spent the rest of their lives in Siberia. I
know they had a son there. I believe his name is Uri. Oskar and
Ferdinand were never again heard from. They both had children.
One was Jenny SIMONEIT-EICHMANN and she got out to West Germany.
I believe Ferdinand SIMONEIT was her father. I wonder what
happened to them. They spent many years trying to locate them
through the Red Cross but assumed that they were killed. I wonder
about their children.
I wonder how the family came to Tilsit. I also wonder if there
may not be relatives still in the East. All we know of now is my
father's half brother Kuno SIMONEIT (born about 1919 or 1920) and
3 cousins: Margot, Martin and Olaf SIMONEIT. They are all in
their 40's and live at Munich, Germany. Kuno is in his 70's.
This is also where my father's stepmother Adelaid SIMONEIT died
of old age. It had been said the SIMONEIT family may have been
French Hugenots at one time. But that may be speculation.
My mother, Ellen Eva TSHUTTER-SIMONEIT (1918-1998), was born and
raised in orphanages in Konigsberg for about the first 7 years of
her life. She escaped Konigberg because she was young and she
lived near the wall. The bombing and what happened after sounded
pretty horrible. Her grandmother Tschutter died while they were
fleeing. My grandparents were Gustav HORSTKOTTE, a banker from
Westphalia, and Eva TSCHUTTER (about 1890 to 1989) from Wehlau,
near Konigsberg. The story goes that the Tshutters came from
Hungary. Eva's father was a railroad worker. At the time of his
death, Eva was sent to Konigsberg to learn to be a maid and help
support the family. Here she met HORSTKOTTE and conceived my
mother. I have a lot of curiosity about this side of the family
as I have a son with high-functioning autism that is said to be
genetic but know little about them. I can't seem to find any
history on these names and would appreciate any help. Thanks so
much for your interest.
Webmaster's Note: If you wish to explore the question of
records at Wehlau (there is a reel of "Grundbuchindex" for 1836
that would be helpful to surname index) or of Hugenot or other
Königsburg records - several are of real interest to me here
- FEEFHS is prepared to work with you ... if you, in turn, are
willing to help us create finding aids (by you computerizing a
list of surnames) from the microfilm reels your look at.

I am researching the ancestry of Johann Carl WEBER and his wife
Maria Rosina AUST. Their son Johann Carl August WEBER, born 19
October 1827 (I believe), emigrated to the USA in 1850. They
lived at Raokoschuetz (now Rakoszyc) in Poland. His father was a
blacksmith in Raokoschuetz. There were other siblings who
emigrated to Wisconsin, one to California, and one to Texas. I
have no further information than this. Any assistance is greatly
appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking for any information I can find on my wife's
great-grandparents. They were: Charles Ludwig HIRSCHFELD, born
1852 in Prussia, died 23 September 1934 at Chicago, Illinois.
Julianna BRODERICK (or BRODAK: I have seen both spellings), born
1857 in Posen, died 28 February 1931 at Chicago, Illinois.
I have in my possession a Reise-Pass for Charles dated 8 May
1891. I have had different people look at it and the best I can
come up with is that the pass was issued at Schroda and that he
was from Franzburg (?). The writing is poor and hard to
decipher. Any suggestions?
Webmaster's Note: Your clues seem to be in that travel pass.
There was a town or village named Franzburg in Pommern
(Pomerania) with census, military and emigration records
preserved. There also was a town named Schroda in Posen (now
Shroda, Poznan) which has some church, Jewish and civil records.
The original records for both locations are at Griefswald's
Staatsarchiv. They have been microfilmed and are available to
use at the FHL in Salt Lake City or for a nomial fee through your
nearest LDS Family History Center (FHC).
Since you have declined to state the probable religon of your
wife's ancestors, we can go no farther than suggest you look at
the microfilmed records for both locations. You might also go
after their emigration or naturalization records (looking for the
locations of birth in Europe) by starting with the Federal census
and their obituaries to determine approximately when the arrived
in America.

The known facts about my ancestors: Michael BREITENBACH was born
about 1789 at Klotyldowo, Subin and married (Roman
Catholic) 9 March 1835 (at Chodziez) to Teresia RECEK (born 15
February 1805 at Slomki). She was his 2nd wife. They lived at
Radwonki. Adalbertus RECEK and Marianna PRZEWOZNIANKA were the
parents of Teresia RECEK. (Source: Archdiocesan Catholic
Archives, Poznan: birth and marriage records). Martin
BREITENBACH emigrated to Wisconsin about 1860. He was married in
St. Joseph Church at Appleton, Wisconsin in 1876. His
descendants live in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin and in
Louisiana. I am interested in land titles and German military
records for BREITENBACH, as well as any other information about
the above.
Webmaster's Note: Catholic church transcripts of vital
records are on FHL microfilm for present day Chodziez in Poland -
then called Kolmar when it was a German town. These microfilms
also cover the nearby village on Radwonke (now Radwanki, Poland).
The text is in both Polish and German. They can be obtained on
loan for a nominal fee to be viewed at your nearest LDS Family
History Center (FHC).
I know of no German military records or land and property records
for that area that have been microfilmed. The German military
records may exist in Germany. The land and property records can
be expected to exist at the Polish state archive covering a
region of Poland that contains the town in question.
Obtaining the correct fond and file to support your land and
property records research interest could turn out be quite an
experience; one that may span an extended period of time. It
will most certainly call for the need of help from professionals
skilled in dealing with the Polish state archive system. Unless
you can cite a specific "gut" (farm) or land location, it will
probably call for an onsite visit by an experienced trilingual
(German/Polish/English) genealogy record searcher. Thus it could
become expensive, with no a-priori assurance of success.

I am searching for information on the WILMS and RABENHORST
families who originate at
or near the city of Gnesen (modern day Gniezo, Poland). My
information begins with a
Frederick (possibly Johann) WILMS and his wife Helena RABENHORST
(both born circa
1840). They had at least two children. The daughter was Helena
WILMS (born 8
December 1871). The son was named Johann or maybe Heinrich. I
have a photo of him
circa 1890 in a Prussian military uniform. At some point around
1900 this family emigrated
to Einlage, south Russia. There may be a connection with the
SOMMERFELD family as
well. I would love to hear from anyone with information on the
WILMS or RABENHORST
or SOMMERFELD families. Thank you in advance.

I am seeking information regarding Goetlieb HIRTH. He emigrated
from Bromberg Stadt to the United States during early 1888. His
family appears to have lived at Bromberg since at least 1837 when
he was born there. His second wife was Wilhelmine. His first
wife was Charolina NITZ, also of Bromberg Stadt. Goetlieb's
daughter was Emilie HIRTH. She emigrated with him and married
August BAUMANN, also of Bromberg Stadt. They married in the
United States. August emigrated during 1892. His father,
Frederick BAUMANN, born Bromberg Stadt 1835, followed him to the
United States during 1899. Frederick Baumann's parents were

I am looking for information on Johann Friedrich WARNKE. He was
born 13 June 1814 in Schneidemuhl, Prussia. Marriage records
indicate he was from Stieglitz, Posen, and his first children

WOZNIAK, Mary C.

eMail address: jwozniak@triton.net
(Roman Catholic)
I am looking for any information about Michal WOZNIAK, born about
1879, at Posen, Posen, Poland. The 1920 census for Chicago, Cook
County, Illinois, indicates that he emigrated in 1899. He
married Julianna Eva WOLLEK, in Chicago, Illinois, date unknown.
Their children, born in Chicago, were: John, 1906; Edward, 1907;
Zygmunt, 1909; Bronislaw (Bruno), 1912; Michael, 1914; Czeslaw
(Chester), 1915; Florentyna (Florence), 1916; Stanislaw
(Stanley); and Delores. On 16 May 1919 Julia WOZNIAK bought a
farm in Clearfield Township, Juneau County, Wisconsin. Two more
children, Louis (1923) and ?, were born there. These two died in
infancy and are said to be buried there on the family farm.
Michal WOZNIAK was a carpenter. He died in 1935, and is buried
at Resurrection Cemetery, Justice, Cook County, Illinois.
The parents of Julia WOLLEK were Michael WOLLEK, born September,
1855 or 1856 in Poland (Germany), and Anna MAZURKIEWICZ, born 8
or 9 May 1857, also in Poland (Germany). They lived in the 4800
block of South Hoyne Avenue at Chicago, Illinois. Michael WOLLEK
emigrated in 1879, and was a laborer who worked in the
stockyards. Anna emigrated in 1882. Other children of this
marriage were: Stanislaw (Stanley), 1884; Michael P., 1885;
Martin, 1888; John, 1892; Stephen; and Roman, 1899 (data from the
1920 Chicago census). The WOZNIAK and WOLLEK families were
Catholic.
I don't know anything about Michal WOZNIAK's parents or possible
siblings. Nor do I know why he settled in Chicago, or why Julia,
and not Michal, bought the farm. How did they find Juneau,
Wisconsin? Were the WOZNIAK's in Juneau related to Michal?
Other family names I'm looking for include: TARGOSZ, BANIA,
GRANICZNY, JUREK, STRZELECKI, and KOSCHAK. Thank you for any
information you may have.
