I am looking for information regarding Rabbi Gabriel Ben Jacob COHN. His 1864 obituary states that he was born at Wreschen, Posen (then Germany) in 1784, that he qualified to study at the Yeshiva in Posen in 1797, married at Gnesen and served as a rabbi in that town from 1808-1815, served as a rabbi at Tirschstiegel from 1815-1831, and moved to Samter in 1831, where he served as a rabbi until his death in 1864. His wife was Flora (or Sara) HAUSDORF, born at Samter, Posen, Germany. They had two sons, Leibusch PINCUS COHN, born 1814 at Tischtiegel, Posen, Germany, and Joseph SCHUEL COHN, born at Schoenlanke, and a daughter, Rachel COHN. Leibusch Pincus COHN married Helene KANTOROWITZ, born 1821 at Samter, Posen. They had six children: Johanna COHN, born 1848 at Samter, Posen; Israel (Ignatz) COHN; Jennie COHN; Fabisch (later moved to Berlin and changed his name to Felix) COHN; Rosa COHN; and another son named either Jacob or Louis or Heinrich COHN. I would like to know where I can look for personal (genealogical) information about my illustrious ancestor.

I am looking for any information on the following individuals. Most specifically, the parents, siblings, grandparents, and if available, family members even further back. Andreas HAHN was born 1837 at Goguken or Gugukow, Damaslau, Posen. Church records here indicate he left the Wongrowitz area in 1876 with his wife, Josephine nee GABSKI of Lobginow. Josephine was born 1848. This couple settled in Washington county, Texas in a community known as Prairie Hill. Andreas died in 1922. Josephine died in 1928. Both are buried at St. John's Luthern Church Cemetary in Prairie Hill. This couple had nine children, of which three, we think, was born in Germany. Emily, born 1868, Herman, born 1874, and Michael, born in 1875.

Church records state that Andreas HAHN had another wife. Her name was Sophie nee BERNDT of Damaslau or Damaslof, Pozen. Records shows two spellings. Nothing is known about Sophie BERNDT. There is no record of her birth or death here in Texas. They did have a son named Friedrich, who was born in 1869 and died in 1878. Nothing more is known about this young son. Any information about Sophie and her family would be most appreciated.

I am trying to locate pre-emigration records on my ancestors who came to America from Posen. I am looking for any official records and other information, as well as names of earlier ancestors and other relatives. I would also like to know about spelling variations for both first names and surnames. The surnames I am looking for are STARK, ARNDT, KISSMAN (KITZMAN), WENDT, SCHUTZ, ZIMMERMAN and KRAMER. The relevant placenames that I know are Rogasen, Posen; Seefeld, and Bromberg in Prussia, and St. Paul, Minnesota and Chicago, Illinois in the USA. Oral family history states that Richard Frederick STARK emigrated to Chicago via New York, and then sent for Marie Martha WENDT at Rogasen and they were married in Chicago. The three STARK family weddings that took place in Chicago were all in an Evangelical Lutheran Church, and Marie WENDT's confirmation certificate from Rogasen is from the Evangelical Lutheran Church there. Julia ARNDT and Ludwig STARK may have emigrated about 1900 as they appear in Chicago at that time. Some or all of their adult children probably emigrated earlier. Here are the descendants: First generation: Gottfried ARNDT married Roselie (Rosina?) KISSMAN / KITZMAN born 23 July 1815 in Germany, died 30 December 30, 1895 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their children were: Henrietta Juliane (Julia), born 1844; William Frank, born 1850; Paulina, born 1854; Amelia (Emelia?) born 1859.

Second generation: Ludwig STARK from Bromberg, Posen (Bydgoszcz) born 1830, died 25 January 1906 at Chicago, Illinois, married
Julia (Henrietta Juliana) ARNDT from Rogasen, Posen born 4 May 1843, died 22 Apr 1933 at Chicago, Illinois. Note: The death certificate says she and her parents were born at Sufelde or Seefelde. Other sources say she was born in the District of
Rogasen, Province of Posen. Could Sufelde / Seefelde be a location within Rogasen, Posen? Their chidren were Bertha born 1865; Richard Frederick, born 1867; Gustav Ludwig born 1868; Augusta Marie born 1871; Otto Oswald born 187; and Pauline E. born 1876.

William Frank ARNDT (born 1850, died 1936) married Henrietta SEMPF (born 1857, died 1904). The "Intent for Naturalization" papers for William state that he was from Germany, he arrived in New York, and he came to the USA in 1872. Apparently he returned to Germany in about 1875, and returned to St. Paul, Minnesota with his wife Henrietta SEMPF and one child in 1879. Thier children were Adolphina (1877-1970), married Franz FRIEDRICH
Adolf (1879-1943), married Julia ?; Ida (1882-1966), married Ernest PETSCH; Olga H. (1886-1946) married F. Wm. MEYER; Albert William (1888-1981) married Sophie ?; Carl E. (1892-1964) married Bertha ?; Fred H. (1896-1977) married Berniece ?; Ella (1900-1974) married George E. POTTHOFF; and three that died young: Emma died 1880; Adam died 1881 and William died 1892.

Paulina ARNDT, born 1854, first married Leopold LUTHER. Pauline may have emigrated in 1874. Her death certificate states she lived in the USA 59 years. She was at St. Paul, Minnesota by 1875. Their child was Richard LUTHER (1877-1878). She married a second time to Henry HAGEMAN. ARNDT, Amelia (Emelia) ARNDT (1859-1926) married 20 June 1896 at St. Paul, Minnesota to John SCHMIDT (1850-1948), Their child was Emil ARNDT (1875-1948). Emil arrived at New York 15 August 1883 from Bremen, Germany. He was born at West Provis, Posen, Germany on 11 August 1875. He signed Intention (first) papers 15 February 1915 and final papers 2 June 1919, and provided the above information at that time. Emil's father's name is not known.

Third generation: Bertha STARK (1865-1925) married Herman HINZ who died 1901. They had four children. Some of the children adopted the spelling of HEINZ or HINZE. STARK, Richard Frederick born Feb 7, 1867 in Posen, died Dec 24, 1939 in Chicago, IL was the son of Ludwig and Julia. Richard immigrated to Chicago via New York. Birthplace on death certificate for Richard and both parents is Posen, Germany. After he emigrated, Richard sent for his parents and Marie and they were married in Chicago, so the families knew each other in Posen. Richard married Marie Martha WENDT 30 April 1892 at Chicago. Marie was born 6 September 1870 at Rogasen, and died May 24, 1954 at Chicago. She was the daughter of August WENDT (1810-1902) and Marie Wilhemina SCHUTZ ?. The had 6 children. STARK, Gustav Ludwig (1868-1948) married 6 January 1900 at Chicago, Illinois to Marie SCHEEL (1878-1971). They had 4 children. Augusta Marie STARK (1871-1941) married John ALTMAN, born 1866. They had 14 children. Otto Oswald STARK (1875-1961) married 21 October 1899 at Chicago to Louisa NIERMAN, born 1880. They had 3 children. Pauline E. STARK, born 11 April 1876, died 18 September 1976, married on 12 January 1905 at Millerville, Minnesota to Paul PRCYBILSKI, born 1870 in Germany. Pauline and Paul probably both immigrated (separately) in 1888. They began using the name SCHEBILSKI or SCHEBELSKE in 1912.

The STARK daughters, Bertha, Augusta, and Pauline all settled in St. Paul, MN, while their brothers, Richard, Otto, and Gustav went to Chicago, IL. The adult children apparently immigrated first and sent for (or returned for) parents and spouses later.

I am seeking any information from anyone on the ancestors of Gustav Adolph Otto BUROW, born 1 January 1863 at Bromberg, Posen, Preussen. His parents were Herrmann Friedrich BUROW and Dorothea KLATT, presumably from the same area. I have no other additional information from this branch of the family. Any information that you or anyone else can provide on the family history would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for any information on Robert BROSA (BROSE) from Posen, Germany. He was born 21-August-1864 and married Lena KUYATT 15 November 1891. He died 8 February 1958 in Minnesota. His parents were Robert BROSA of Germany and Mathilde RIVACK of Germany. I am also looking for information on Johann Gottlieb LENZ born 7 October 1819 at Dembowo, Posen. He married on 28 October 1839 at Kwieciszewo, Posen to Eva Rosine HARTFIEL who was born in 1817 in Posen and died 1874 in Russia. Any information on these people would be much appreciated.

I am looking for information on ancestors of my great-grandfather, Joseph DOBSCH (Born 23 Oct, 1838 (est) in Germany). His wife was Anna SELTZER or STELZER. They had the following children, August Joseph DOBSCH (my grandfather) born 12 February 1864, married Emma Anna STRACK in 1892 in America), Paul DOBSCH, Auguste DOBSCH, Joseph DOBSCH, and Reinhold DOBSCH. I have seen a ship listing with Paul DOBSCH departing Gross Peterwitz, Silesia, Prussia in 1884. He emigrated to America on the ship "Sueva". I have looked at church and civil records of DOBSCH in Posen and I found no Dobsch's listed there. Any help would be appreciated.

I was delighted to find your page on the Internet. I am looking for information that will help me trace my ancestors in Posen or Breslau (Wroclaw) in Poland. My Family name was WOLLSTEIN. I believe we are descended from Count Johan Wollstein, who was the Court Interpreter to Jerome Bonaparte at the beginning of the 19th century. I know he had two wives and 11 children, many of whom were believed killed in the Polish Insurrection of 1830.

I know one of his children, my direct ancestor John Edward Israel Wollstein was born at Breslau July 1816. He later moved to England, where I am from; I now live in the USA. I cannot find out exactly where the family came from, in order to trace birth and other vital records. The family was Jewish originally, although parts of the family changed the name and also the religion later on. I believe the family moved to Berlin later in the 19th century, but it is the Polish records that are proving so elusive. I would appreciate any ideas you might have on how I can trace my ancestors.

I need help finding out more about the ancestry and descendants of my great great grandfather Professor Heinrick Godefroy (German version) or Hermann Gershall (Jewish version) OLLENDORFF, born about 1802 at Rewitsh, Posen, at Paris 1865. He emigrated to Paris, France circa 1830 where he published two works Petit Traite sur la Declinaison Allemande and Methode Appliquee a l'Allemand in both French and English editions. Hermann had two sons: Paul born at Paris, and Gustave born at Paris 4 March 1950. Paul was editor of "Gil Blas" in 1904. Both received their Jewish education from the chief rabbi Zadoc Kahn. Much more information is available in the Bibliography: Zadoc Khan, souvenirs et Regrets pp.319-324 1898: Gustave OLLENDORFF Paris 1891. The mother of Paul and Gustav is not, so far, known. While living in Paris Hermann was known as Henri. On 15 August 1851 he married Margaret RAMSAY at St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Scotland. In Kelly's Directory 1852 he is listed as a Teacher of German, living at 62, Queen Street, Edinburgh. Margaret had a son Herrman, born 22 August 1853 at Inveresk, Edinburgh. Herrman married Margaret VINE at Linlithgow, Scotland, 23 August 1880. They had a child Florence OLLENDORFF, (my grandmother) born in Canada (where?) circa 1883. Florence returned to Scotland with her mother shortly after she was born.

Hermann senior married again to Matilda STRAUCH and had a daughter Bertha Victoria OLLENDORFF born 16 August 1864 at Exeter, England. Bertha married Johann Peter Wilhelm GEUTER with whom she had two children, Carl Friedrich Wilhelm GEUTER (born 27 June 1892 at Darmstadt Germany, died 14 February 1961), and Matilde Wilhelmine (born 28 June 1893 at Darmstadt, died 26 June 1984 at Bromsgrove, England. Friedrich married Maria FUCHS, a nurse, at Meschede, Westphalia 11 September 1917, and later settled in Selly Oak, Birmingham, England. Matilde was educated in a Belgian convent and after some time spent in Britain, she took a post as a housekeeper in a hotel in South Africa, where she worked till she was about 80 years old, although she would deny her age, because she did not want to finish working. In 1843, HERMANN OLLENDORFF, "Professor of the German language and literature" resided at 23 Titchbourne Street, Westminster, London. He was naturalised in England 20 December 1850. Any help, information, or guidance will be gratefully appreciated.

I'm interested in finding any decendents still in what was Posen Province Germany. Father and Mother were Martin and Zetta KANNEMAN. Three boys John, August, and Gotlieb (my great grandfather) emigrated to the United States in the late 1800s. A sister Bertha remained in Germany with Martin and Zetta. She would be the only one that may have descendents still in what was Posen Province Germany. As Gotlieb was born in 1850 and died 1933, the time frame would probably be in the late 1800s, early 1900s. Any information would be helpful.

I am seeking information on Friedrich Wilhelm MILBRADT. His wife was Julia (Julianne KASSNER?). Their children were Ida, Hugo, Oscar, Hans amd Hooker - I think. I am trying to confirm these findings. The family story says they came from Posen. I think they were from the Parish of Kolmar. Probably they lived in that area 1830-1870. Ida was my ggrandmother and emigrated to the US in 1872. Where can I find records to confirm this? Thank you.

Emma E. DAHLKE was born to Johann Gottlieb DAHLKE and Charlotte Florentine WOLLSCHLAEGER 23 November 1868 at Klein Salzdorf, Posen, Germany. She had a twin sister Auguste. Johann was born 3 August 1839 at Stonawy, Schubin, Posen and his parrents may have been Martin DAHLKE and Anna Elizabetha ROEN. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? Charlotte was born 4 April 1847 at Bombrowke, Schuben, Posen and her parents were Paul WOLLSCHLAEGER and Caroline PIERSYNSKA. Paul WOLLSCHLAEGER was born in 1798 in Dombrowke and his parents may have been Jacob WOLLSCHLAEGER and Eva Rosina KIETZMAN. Does anyone have information on these families? The records I found were all in the Lutheran church, but Caroline PIERSYNSKA may possibly have been Roman Catholic. A German researcher told me that the name DAHLKE and WOLLSCHLAEGER come from the Westphalia region of Germany. The first ancestors of these people in Posen were probabably brought there by the German government when the area was taken away from Poland in the late 1700's. Can anyone tell me about this or refer me to books (in English please) that could give me some of the history?

My great-great-grandfather Johan William WELK immigrated from Hamburg, Germany on 30 April 1855 on the sailing ship "Amalia". He had his family with him. Wife Wilhamina and children, Ernestine, Julius August (my great grandfather) Henerietta, a daughter that I could not read and Augusta. His place of residence was Chodziesen, Prussia. After an afternoon in the library, I find that Chodziesen is now Chodziez, Poland. He entered through Quebec and then Detroit, Michigan. He lived in LaPorte county, Indiana. I do not know their religion. There was another word above the Chodziesen...Glashutte...Do not know what that means. I would appreciate any help at all you can give me for going back further into Poland. Thank you so very much.
Webmaster's Note: While the literal meaning of Glashutte is 'glass hut', you would have to look in a Posen gazetteer (post WWW I, they are out of print now - find the film number in the FHL Catalog under "Posen") or the Meyers Ortslexikon (1912 - also on microfiche and microfilm as part of the core collection for germany at every FHC) to determine if it refers to a small location near Chodziesen.
