I am researching my great grandparents and need any information on relatives and ancestors of Joseph KUEHN (born 14 March 1862) and Wilhelmine MEYER (born about May 1862). I believe Joseph's father's name was Edward Joseph KUEHN and his mother's name was Wilhelmine (unknown surname). The story that I have is the Kuehn's moved from Hessen (county) to Bromberg. Joseph was in the military. The marriage certificate states "Journeyman Blacksmith Joseph KUEHN from Klein Bartelse, has been married to the single Miss Wilhelmine MEYER on 14 February 1886 in the Evangelical Parish Church". They came to the U.S. in 1887 and settled in Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York. He had brothers Edward J. (born 1858), Emil (born about 1864), and John (born about 1866). I believe they had a sister Aguste KUEHN who married a Josef JAREMBA ? and stayed in Germany. The four brothers came to the U.S. I assume that the KUEHN's were Catholic because they were that in the U.S. There was a WINTER family that was related to the KUEHN'S.

In a translated KUEHN letter the following names are mentioned: Children of Josef and Aguste KUEHN JAREMBA were Bernhard, Margarete, Sophie, Anne (born 1906), and Elizabeth JAREMBA. Margarete married a Wilhelm DIETER and had children Otmar, Bernd, Reinhard, and Lore and grandchildren Gerhard and Angela. Elizabeth married a lawyer, moved to Dusseldorf and had daughter Lianne (born 1933) and lived in Cologne, also married to a lawyer. On the MEYER side there is a Wilhelmine Bertha MEYER listed in the IGI that was christened on 9 December, 1862 in Bromberg. The witness's I believe are the parents, Gustav MEYER and Anna PAPKE. The father's name was always thought to be Frederick MEYER. Wilhelmine's siblings were Ida Louise (born January 1865 at Bromberg and also found in the IGI with the same parents), Frederick J. (born November 1870), Emil (born about 1873), and Bertha (born March 1878). I assume that the MEYER's were Lutheran. They all emigrated to the U.S. between 1887 and 1892. I have a translated letter form the MEYERS side about 1920 which is from a cousin Ida NICKEL LISCHWASKI in Klein Bartelse who mentions an Uncle Fritz and Aunt Minna, a brother Emil NICKEL and his son Artur. I would appreciate any information on these families.

(Lutheran)

My grandfather, Heinrich SCHNECK, was born on 4 July 1893, in Bandrow Colonie, Galicia. He had at least one brother and six sisters. Two of his sisters were Katharine Schneck, (born: 18 January 1888) and Margaret Schneck (born 14 December 1905). The children's parents were Jakob SCHNECK and Katharina KOCH. I believe the family was re-settled to Schleswig-Holstein prior to WW I. Katharina Koch Schneck died in 1912. She may have died in Wolfsburg, Germany. The family was Lutheran. The Bandrow Colonie no longer exists. It had been located in what is now the extreme southeastern part of Poland, near the border with the Ukraine. Bandrow's sister village, Bandrow Narodowy, still exists, just inside the Ukraine border.

According to "Bandrow Colony, "an article by Jakob Frambach, that I read in the Galizien German Descendants Newsletter: "the old church register was, in the course of the War (WW II), collected from Commisar Seegman in Welnau by Pastor Eilmes and taken to the District Kinship office in Posen." Does anyone have a clue where the original Church Register from the German Lutheran Church in Bandrow Colonie is now stored? Any information would be appreciated. Some families that lived at Bandrow were FRAMBACH, GRIMM, HENNIG, JUNG, KOCH, LICHT, MACK, STREILEIN, SCHNECK and UMBACH. Many members of these Bandrow families emigrated to Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Webmaster's Note: Bandrow is not in Posen (the German partition of Poland) but in Galizien (the crownland of Galicia in the Austrian partition). Some Lutheran churchbooks (1788-1847) for Bandrow exist at the Archiwum Panstwowym in Warsaw where they were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU - two FHL reels). What happened to the more recent ones you are referring to is not presently known.

I am searching for the ancestors of my great grandparents, Martin KAATZ and Henriette Wilhelmina (nee DUMDEI) KAATZ. Martin KAATZ was born 14 October 1830, in Germany, no exact location known, and Wilhelmina DUMDEI was born 9 May 1834, her obituary says at Putzig, Posen. Martin and Wilhelmina had nine children: Emma, Ludwig, Gustav, Wilhelmina, Emil, Wilhelm, Alvina, Ottilie and Herman. Family records show that Gustav was born 29 August 1860, at Schneidemuhl, Posen; Ottillie born 15 February 1872 in Ascherbude, Posen; and Herman born 3 July 1875 at Ascherbude, Posen. For the birthplaces of the rest of the children, I have only Germany. One sun, Gustav, emigrated to the United States about 1879, and the rest of the family arrived at Ellis Island in New York on the Steamship "India", in June, 1884. Ship's records say they were natives of Prussia. They stayed for a short time with relatives in either Buffalo or Syracuse, New York, then migrated to Wood Lake, Minnesota, where they were farmers. Martin KAATZ was one of the founders of the St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wood Lake, Minnesota, in 1885.

My grandfather, Valentin MACIEJESKI, married Franziska WISNIEWSKI 22 December 1897 at Spandau, Berlin, Germany. He died 9 November 1910 at Spandau, Berlin, Germany. His death certificate gives Lenzec, Kreis Wreschen, Posen as his birthplace and about 1865 as his birth year. He was catholic and his father may have been named Valentin also. Where can I locate any records to show his birth, parents, and siblings, if any?

DOBSCH, Tommy Frederick

I am trying locate information on my Grandfather, August Joseph DOBSCH (born 12 Feb 1864 in Prussia). I believe that August's father was Joseph DOBSCH (born 23 October 1838, location unknown). I know that is a town in POSEN (Poland) by the name of DOBSCH (Dobrcz). Can anyone help me. Thanks
Webmaster's Note: You greatly diminisdh the potential effectivness of your message in getting help by not disclosing the full (maiden) name of the spouses and their siblings. Dobsch churchbooks and civil registration records are on FHL microfilm.

eMail address: William.J.Fonferek@saj02.usace.army.mil

I am looking for Theodor FONFEREK, born in 1872 at Lindenheim, Kries Czarnkow, near Schneidemuhl. Would his birth records be at Schneidemuhl? The Stetlseeker program does not locate this town in this area. In the local library one book locates two Lindenheims, one in Posen and the other in north east Poland.

Box 73, Webb, Saskatchewan, Canada S0N 2X0

I am searching for information on a greatgrandfather, John GATZKE, born in 1840, who emigrated from Posen, Prussia in 1857 to Minnesota. I don't know if Posen refers to the city or the province. He fought in the American Civil War. In his later years, he emigrated to Webb, Saskatchewan, Canada.

(Lutheran?)

I am looking for information about my great grandmother, Rosalie SCHREFFLER / SHREFFLER, born 15 September 1842 in Posen of German heritage. She was probably Lutheran. She immigrated with her parents to Cedar Lake, Indiana in 1862 and married John Carl STOETZEL the following year. In 1869, the family moved to Nebraska. She died 16 March 1915 at Omaha, Nebraska. Some sources list her birthdate as 17 August 1831.

KLUKAS, Charles

My husbands' family were from Posen Prussia Germany. His great grandfather was John Julius KLUKAS and went by the name of Julius KLUKAS. He was born 13 December 1853 but we do not know where. He emigrated to the US in 1883, but we do not know the port her arrived at. We first found him in the 1908 Steubenville, Ohio city directory. He was a Captain of the Palace Guards for Kaiser Wilhelm, so we are told. We have information that there were three brothers and know of the other two. We cannot find the information to link us to the rest of the KLUKAS names. His wifes name was Albertina BRIDLAUGH. She was born 26 May 1859. My grandfather's name was John Julius KULKAS and he also went by Julius Klukas. He was born 23 July 1880 somewhere in Posen. According to family Albertina and two boys emigrated to the US after Julius Sr. died. We have no record of when she arrived either. Any help you can give us would be much appreciated.

I am looking for information on Erdmann MOENCH (MÖNCH) born about 1813 in Posen, Prussia. I am also looking for information on Henrietta GUDERIAN of Posen Prussia, born October 1819. Four of their children were August Henry MOENCH born 1844, married Thresa GUDERIAN; Mary MOENCH WEIDEMAN / WEIDEMANN; Emilie MOENCH; Ida MOENCH; WENDELL and ? MOENCH ALCOTT. I believe they emigrated to the US in 1856. If anyone can help on this, it will be very much appreciated.

MULLEN, Nancy K.
eMail address: NKMullen@aol.com

Friedrich Brommund and his wife Emma Schmidt came to New York, New York with seven children, ages 11 to 20 years, in 1875 or 1876. Two of the daughters were married in the German Lutheran church in NY. Both claimed to be born in Franzburg, Posen, Preussen. I am unable to locate a Franzburg in Posen, and a search of the church records in Franzburg, Pommern do not show the family. A graddaughter of Friedrich claimed that the family came from Berlin, but I have been unable to find any corroboration for that statement. Can you help me locate this family? Friedrich was born 6 January 1820 "in Germany." The children were Louise (born 1855 at Franzburg), Augusta, Emma (born 1859), Pauline, Emile (born November 1860), Adolph and Ottilie (born 1864 at Franzburg). Thanks for your help.
Webmaster's Note: Beyond posting here and being in contact with the Posen listserv, your options are limited. Have you looked at the FHL Catalog listing of topics and collectuions for the province of Posen? If none of them help, and there is nothing in the IGI or Ancestral File for you, you might try the Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes for your surname. Have you checked any possible alternate spellings of your surname (like Brummund) in the FHL Catalog's surname search section?

OLSEN, Colonel LaMont

eMail address: OlsenLGB@aol.com

I am seeking information on my Great Great Grandparents lines. They emigrated from the Posen area in Prussia to Milwaukee Wisconsin about 1869 or 1870. My Great Great Grand father was August Ludwig (Louis) JAHNKE. He was born at Ottowo, Sassenheim, Posen, Prussia 28 October 1833 and died 28 February 1920 in Cedarburg Township, Ozaukee, Wisconsin; buried 27 September 1912 in the Zur Ruhe Cemetery, Cedarburg Tozaukee, Wisconsin. My Great Great Grandmother was Ernstine Wilhelmine NIXDORF. She was born 22 October 1844 at Wreschen, Posen, Prussia and died on 25 September 1912. She died the same place as her husband and is also buried in the same cemetery. I have information on each of their parents but is not complete. I would appreciate comparing information with anyone who may be researching the Jahnke, Nixdorf or SACHER surnames.
Webmaster's Note: While you do not state a religion for them, their are Evangelisch, Jewish and Roman Catholic church records on FHL microfilm for Wreschen, Posen as well as some court records. IN addition someone has extracted all the Jahnke listings from the 1880 and 1900 Federal censuses and a Sacher line also lived in Saxony.

POLOWAY, Ed
eMail address: INTELL2@prodigy.net

I am researching any information on my Great-Grandfather, Bruno POLOWAY. I believe the German spelling of this name is POLOWY. He was born in Posen, Germany around 1880-1898. He emigrated to the United States and eventually came to live at Chicago, Illinois. He moved again and settled at Cicero, Illinois. I also believe his middle name was Edward. I am anxious to learn of any information regarding his family name. Are there any Polowy's left in Posen? Any history on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: It ius highly unlikely ethnic Germans at livong in Posen, Poland today. However the is a fair chance that you might find some Polowy descendants living in united Germany today - contact the IGS (Immigrant Genealogy Society) of Burbank, California (see their Homepage) for a search of the German Telephone Book on CD-ROM.

I am searching for information concerning the forebears of Edward NATHAN, born in or near Krotoschin, Posen in January 1828. He was Jewish. Webmaster's Note: Krotoschin Posen (now Krotoszyn, Poznan, Poland) is well represented with 6 FHL microfilm collections, including 2 reels of Jewish transcripts of vital data (1825 - 1847) and civil registration (13 reels: 1874-1894).

STEINKE, Kevin P.
Neenah, Wisconsin, USA
eMail address: KPS813@aol.com

I am trying to find the birthplace of my g-g-g-grandfather Johann Daniel STEINKE. If I could find the birth records of his two sons that might give me information on his place of birth. His son August was born in Gross Golle in about 1843. I believe that was in the county of Wongrowitz. His son Johann Daniel Jr. was born about 1849 at Janowitz, county of Wongrowitz. I haven't been able to find a birth record of either one of these two. They were of the Lutheran religion. Johann Daniel STEINKE Sr. may have had a sister that lived in Wiela. Any information on records from that town would be appreciated also.

I am researching my great grandfather and hope for a connection to Posen, Germany where Julius Albert SCHLENDER was born in 1861. At some point his Mother Julia was widowed and remarried to a Mr. SHOEBENHAUER. Julius Albert married Elizabeth Ann O'ROURKE and they raised their family in Hurly, Wisconsin where he owned a taylor shop. Any help with finding Julius' fathers name and exactly where in Posen they came from will be greatly appreciated.

WIENER, Dorothy F.

Jacob KLATT was born 06 July 1829 in Posen, Prussia. His wife, Anna KLAWITTER was born 10 August 1828 in Posen, Prussia. That is all the information I have. Can anyone help pinpoint the birthplace and marriage of my husband's g-g-grandparents? They had a son Christopher, born 26 December 1859 in Posen who married Mary Nussbaum. Their children were Clara, Rosalia, Anna, William and Leo. Also a child named Andrew, who married Mary FURMAN. They had children George, Joseph, Martha, Ida, Josephine, Celia. Christopher said he was 10 when they came to America on a sailing ship (emigration about 1869). The family settled in New London, Wisconsin.
Webmaster's Note: The Klawitter listing in the surname search section of the FHL Catalog indicates that line came from Hermansdorf Posen - you might review it. You might also try the Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes for your surnames.

WINGER, Donald

(Lutheran)

I am looking for information to confirm birth or anything else for my grandmother, Mary RADTKE. Born 6 July 1884, at Kretzkow, Posen Germany. Her father was Stefhan RADTKE (birth location unknown). Her mother was Cecilia PATRIERS (birth location unknown). Mary RADTKE married Herman Julius ZIMMERMANN born March 1878 at Renazeno, Posen Germany. I also need information about Herman Julius ZIMMERMANN. His father was Gottlier Zimmermann, born unknown and mother was Caroline RACH (birth location unknown). born unknown. Mary RADTKE married Herman Julius ZIMMERMANN in 1905 in the USA. Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: You do not specify the religion of these families; a very important factor in determining if church records are available. There are two reels of FHL microfilm of Kretkow, Posen civil registration records (1874-1878) available. Several of the 6 citations for Radke in the Surname Search section of the FHL Catalog might be helpful. Zimmermann is rather common, with 39 citations in the FHL Catalog. It may be possible to extend your search beyond the IGI and the Ancestral File with Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes for both surnames, knowing their place of origin.
