I am researching the whereabouts of Senta MARESCH of Riga,
Latvia, who relocated to Posen, Warthegau. As many were, the
MARESCH Family were ethnic Germans who lived in Latvia. Senta
MARESCH was born at Riga, Latvia, on 22 July 1898 and resided
on Pulkveza Brieza iela #3 dz.20 at Riga. Her religion was
Evangelical Lutheran, and the family worshipped at St. Petri
Kirche (or "Petera Baznica" in Latvian). Senta was relocated to
Posen, Warthegau (now Poznan, Poland) in 1940 during the
relocation of Germans from eastern Europe after the Russo-German
Non-Aggression Treaty was signed in 1939. She was unmarried at
the time and I do not know when or where she died. This
confirmation of this information was obtained from a microfilm
copy of the Einwanderungszentralstelle Auftrage housed at the
National Archives (Reel #A3342-EWZ53-E029). In the documents,
the name was spelled in several different variations: MARESCH,
MARISCH, MARSCH for the German, and MARISS, MARESS for the
Latvian variants. She would have used the orginal spelling
above, despite the variants / errors on the paperwork. Her
parents were Emil Carl Friedrich MARESCH, born at Riga, Latvia,
on 20 September 1867 and Wilhelmine Ulrike BARTELS, born at Werro
(now Voru, Estonia) on 12 March 1867. I do not know where or
when they died, but they were still living in 1938. There is no
information on whether they were relocated.
She had two sisters: Alma Marija MARESCH (born Witebsk, November
1901) and Erna MARESCH (no other information or /dates). Alma
Marija MARESCH was my grandmother. She married Daniel de la Cruz
ALTRE, a Filipino US Navy seaman at Riga at St. Petri Kirche, in
1924. They emigrated to the United States in 1937. They had
three children, all still living. Alma died at Rochester, New
York in 1978. Erna was married, but no spouse name or when/where
she died is known. It is not known if she was relocated as
described above as well. If anyone has any information or clues
that may aid my research, it would be greatly appreciated. I
know Germans were largely purged from Posen after the war, but is
there a general area where they were again relocated, or any
records which may indicate further movements from Posen after
World War II?

I am searching for the place of origin in Posen for my
great-great-grandparents, Albert / Adalbert KALKA, born April
1852, and Juliana nee FAMULA, born April 1858. They were Roman
Catholic. They left Posen in 1878 and settled at Chicago
Illinois USA where they both lived until their deaths. I am also
searching for the place of origin in Posen for my
great-great-grandfather, George SAS / SASS / SASSCY, born 1841 to
Mary, born about 1820, and (unknown) SAS, also Catholic. George,
along with his wife Magdelena, daughter Katie, and mother Mary,
emigrated from Posen in 1873. They settled at the town of Casco,
Wisconsin, and later Eaton, Wisconsin. Death place unknown.

I am searching for information on my great-great-grandfather John
LEA. I don't know for a fact, but have reason to believe he may
have come from Posen. He was born 2 February 1848 and immigrated
to the U.S. circa 1855-1862 with 4 or 5 brothers. I know LEA
does not sound like a German name, but in fact there about 80
Lea's living in Germany at this time. A few are English, but
some are, in fact, German. I have had some correspondence with
them and one has provided me with an eMail picture of the 'Lea'
family crest. The reason I think my great-great-grandfather's
family may have originated in Posen is in searching the LDS IGI
for all of Germany, from the 1790's to the 1890's, the Lea name
was found 23 times. All but 6 are from Posen. They are from 4
localities: Ostrowo, Schildberg, Adelnau and Koschmin. If anyone
has ever heard this name in connection with Posen or knows how I
can research this further, I would appreciate help. Are most of
the records from these towns now back in Germany? Where ever
they are, I would like to find a researcher to do some
lookups.

I'm trying to trace my family history and I need some advice. My
great-great-grandparents emigrated from Germany sometime between
1875 and 1895. Below is what I know about them. Can you tell me
how to find out more? Frederick August NICKEL, born 3 November
1850, in Germany, died 30 November 1903 at Montello, Wisconsin,
maarried Wilhemina REETZ WAGONER MUNDT, 1872, in Germany.
Wilhemina Reetz Wagoner MUNDT, born 16 September 1846 at
Siebenschloeschen, Posen, Germany, died 20 April 1939 at
Montello, Wisconsin, married August Mundt, 1864 (3 children:
Emil, Will, Emma) married Frederick August Nickel, 1872 (8
children: Alvina, Hulda, Otto, Paul, Albert, Edward, Arthur
Walter, Victor). Alvina NICKEL, their eldest child (and my
great-grandmother), was born at Siebenschloesschen, Posen,
Germany 10 April 1875 and she married Seth CUMMINGS 30 May 1896
at Packwaukee, Wisconsin. I am a novice at this genealogical
research, so any advice you can provide would be helpful and much
appreciated. Thank you.

I am researching the name WARNER in Posen. My great-grandfather
was Charles Edward Warner born 15 March 1860 in Posen Poland.
The family knows nothing of him. They have heard there was a
secret concerning him but have no clue what it could be. He
married and settled in Clarkson Nebraska and surrounding towns.
He married Anna Benes and had quite a few children:
Josephine, Lillian, Anna, Joseph, Charles, Amy (male), and
Rudolph. He left her after after a few years of marriage (enough
to have all those children) and died in Omaha, I believe a
pauper. He is buried there. He was a baker by trade but I have
no clue what he did after he left Anna to support himself. My
aunt has told me he lived in the negro-district in Omaha. I have
no idea how tall he was or if he had siblings or anything like
that.

In October of 1832, my great-grandfather, Julius FRANZ, was born
at Rosenfelde, just south of Deutsch Krone. His father may have
been Martin, his mother Katarina, surname unknown. I am unable
to find a source for further progress. The family was Catholic.
Julius had six children in Posen before immigrating to America.
They were: Martha, died Kansas, no descendants; Clara, married
Lopy CZANANSKIY, died Kansas, no descendants; Anastasia, married
GERTZ, died in Michigan and has many descendants, mostly in
Minnesota and Wisconsin; Adalbert, never married, died Wisconsin
and buried Kansas; Leonhardt never married, died Oregon; and
Margaret, married DUMAS, died in California. In the United
States, Julius had maore children: Mary Magdalen (my
grandmother), married Louis HEIMERL, died Wisconsin; Julia
Hedwiga, died Washington; Hubert, never married, died California;
and, Clement, died Kansas. I also have Polish ancestors from
this area. They lived at Czarnitz, but their church was Holy
Family Church at Brusy. There surnames are WISNEWSKI and
ORIKOWSKI. Any help or advice? My great-grandparents,
Franciscus WISNIEWSKI and Martyna ORLIKOWSKI were born in Poland.
I can find no ancestor information for them.

I am seeking information on my great-grandmother: Hedwig /
Hedwige BARANSKI, born 1869 at Miloslaw or Wreschen, Posen. She
was married to Valentine JEDNORALSKI of the same towns. They
immigrated to the Buffalo, New York area, where she died in 1937.
They had four daughters named Mary, Victoria, Celia, and
Josephine. I know Victoria was born in 1890 in "German Poland".
The rest were born in New York state, USA. Thank you for any
help. Just finding your site with Posen on it is a thrill for
me.

My grandmother's name was Apolonia CZARNOWSKA, born in 1886 in
Posen. Her parents were Francesca ZODKOWSKA and JanPawel
CZARNOWSKY. He was a footman for the Kaiser. They had 4 sons.
Apolonia married Florian MARACH, born in 1862. They were
supposedly married on the boat immigrating to Boston or Baltimore
in 1905. The marriage was annulled by the Pope in the early
1940's. They had 9 children, one of which could be American:
Frank MARACH, born in 1906-1907 ? I was in Poland 2 years ago
and did not find anything. Can you help me? Thank you.

I'm looking for help. My great-great-great-grandparents were
Peter FULOREINSKY and Mary KRAUSS FULOREINSKY of Posen. (I'm not
sure of this name; I've never seen it anywhere but on their
daughter Katarina's second marriage record.) Their daughter
Katarina immigrated to the USA in 1886 when she was 18 years old.
Katarina was married first to Rudolph Christian KRUEGER of
Lingen, Hanover, Germany. The two sons she had with Rudolph were
Rudolph James, born 1896, and Frank John, born 1897. Rudolph
died in 1896 and in 1899 she married Karl TORNROOS and had one
more son: Karl Isak Tornroos, born 1901. Katarina died in 1948
in Dorchester, Massachusetts. There are many descendants of
Frank John, her 2nd born. I would love to share this
information. If you can help, please do so.

I am looking for information on Andreas Henry TREDER, born 1793
(?) in Poland and died 16 December 1848 at Tuszkowy, Poland. He
married Barbara KARPINSKI, born about 1796 in Poland and died
1850 at Tuszkowy, Poland. I was told Andreas had 10 to 12
brothers and sisters. I haven't found any information about his
brothers and sisters or his parents (I haave no names of
parents). I keep wondering if there might have been some kind of
name change over the years. Spellings I know of are: TRIZDER,
TREDER, TRADER, TREADER, TREADOR, TREDDER, TREJDER and TREJDOR to
name a few. Andreas was married about 1818 in Poland; on his
wife Barbara Karpinski no information has been found either.
They had 10 children, but I have information on only 6. Some
immigrated to the United States and some to Canada. I have found
many new Trader / Treder families all over the United States, and
can't find a connection to any of them. I keep thinking some of
these families must be descended from Andreas' brothers and
sisters. If anyone has information on any of the Trader families
in any area of Poland, I would be grateful if you would get in
touch with me. If Andreas did have that many brothers and
sisters, maybe some stayed in Poland. Thanks in advance.

Johann G. MUCH (1814-1900) and Ernestine SONTAG (1822-1892)
emigrated from the province of Posen in Prussia to Canada in
1862. The following year they immigrated to Bloomfield,
Wisconsin, with their four children: Carl Ludwig (Charles), John
Herman (Herman), Charlotte, and Gusta (probably Augusta). They
were neighbors of the ZEMPEL (or ZEMPLE) family whose origin was
"Polichow" or "Polichova" (probably Polichno) in the province of
Posen, and the MUCH family may also have originated there or
nearby, as neighbors often immigrated together. I am seeking
further information on their Prussian background.

I am looking for information about my great-grandfather,
Martin KWAPISZESKI, born 28 October 1855, in Posen, Germany
(don't know if this was the town or the province). He immigrated
to Iowa circa 1879. He met his wife, Marie RADKE, on the Posen /
West Prussia border. She immigrated to America in 1882 and they
were married at Westpahlia, Iowa in April 1882. Both families
were Roman Catholic. Martin KWAPISZESKI was a blacksmith by
trade. We know very little beyond this information. The family
has said that this is not a real familiar name. I'm looking for
any help possible. Thanks.

I'm seeking further information about the FROELKE (alternate
spellings: FROEHLKE / FROHLKE) family of Behle (near Schoenlanke,
now Trzcianka, Poland) in Posen. My
great-great-great-grandparents were Martin FROHLKE and Rosalie
[GRYGERT / GRIEGERT]
FROHLKE, both born about 1800. My great-great-grandfather, Franz
FROELKE (1828-1877) and his brothers, Jacob FROELKE (1823-?),
Joseph FROELKE (1825-?), and twins Johannes (1832-1875) and
Michael (1832-1887) all immigrated to the United States between
1849 and 1857. Several of the brothers, including my
great-great-grandfather, settled and raised families in
Vincennes, Knox
county, Indiana. I have checked the West Prussian Land Register
(1772-1773) and have found three familes in Behle that bear the
same surname: Jacob FROELKE, his wife, two sons and two
daughters; Martin FROELKE, his wife, and one daughter; and
Michael FROELKE, his wife, three sons and two daughters. But, I
have not yet been able to "connect" any of these three families
to my direct line. What are my best resources for tracing my
ancestry further back into the eighteenth and seventeenth
Centuries in this particular area of Posen?

I am trying to find some information on family originating from
Posen. My grandmother, Maria Mathilde NETZEL, was born at Lodz
(Litzmannstadt) on 3 January 1912; her parents were Leon NETZEL,
who was lost during World War I, and Bronislawa (Bronhilde)
NETZEL, born BARTENBACH. The family apparently lived in
Rischenwalde (Rycywol) in Posen, where the BARTENBACH family had
a large farming estate. Bronislawa's mother was possibly called
Emma BARTENBACH. In the same area, a family KOELNKE (KOLNKES ?)
also lived. Their daughter married a RIESE, resulting in the
birth of Arthur Theodor RIESE, my grandfather, born at
Ritschenwalde 31 October 1913. Arthur RIESE married Maria
NETZEL, and the couple had to flee to Mecklenburg during World
War II. I also know that my grandmother had a cousin; her aunt
(a BARTENBACH) married a MARZ / MAERZ resulting in three sons,
Roland, Eduard & ?. Roland MAERZ / MARZ immigrated to the USA.
I would like more information on the NETZEL, RIESE, KOELNKE or
BARTENBACH families.

I am an 80-year-old grandson hoping to find information on my
paternal grandparents. The information I have found so far is
rather inconclusive. Any information would be much appreciated.
Thank you. Here is the information I have: Ludvig SPEICHERT was-
born 1831, Posen, Prussia (?) and died 9 July 1916 at Woodbury,
Minnesota. His father was Simon Strate Speichert, married 4
March 1850 to his mother, Henrietta NICHOLICK (?). Henrietta
(NICOLIA) SPEICHERT was born 1835, Posen and died 1927 at
Woodbury, Minnesota. Their children were: Augusta, born June
1867, Posen (?); Ernst, born May 1869; died 1929, Posen (?).
The US Federal census for Minnesota showed the family as
residents in 1870.

I' am looking for the names STUEBBE, STIBBE or STIEBBE in the
area of Chodziesen, Poland (named Kolmar in Posen in 1877). Most
of my family-members were "Tuchmachermeister" and they settled
down 1) in the area of Chodziesen: Budsin, Jankendorf, Radwonke
and Margonin and 2) and in the area of Bialystok,
"Kongreßpolen" (Kongresspolen): Suprasl and Choroszcz. Who
knows something about: 1. Paul STIEBBE (or Stuebbe),
Tuchmachermeister at Chodziesen, died before 1812 (Evangelical
Lutheran) 2. Samuel Nathanael STUEBBE (or Stibbe) (Paul's son),
Tuchmachermeister and Schullehrer (teacher) at Budsin, Radewunke
and Margonin, born before 1785, died after 1839 (Evangelical
Lutheran). He married Anna Rosina LUECK (born at Margonin, 1782,
died at Chodziesen 1 March 1836 [Evangelical Lutheran]. Her
father was Michael Lueck, Leinenweber at Margonin). 3. Samuel
STUEBBE (or Stibbe) (Samuel Nathanael's son) Tuchmachermeister,
born at Chodziesen between 1817 and 1820, died at Choroszcz 16
February 1857. He married
Rosina Rosalie PASCHAPP / PASZAP, died after 1870 (Roman
Catholic). One member of my family, August Hugo STUEBBE, born at
Suprasl near Bialystok 5 may 1887 (Evangelical Lutheran),
immigrated to aand settled down at Armawir in Russia, near the
"Schwarzes Meer" (Black Sea). He was married and he had two or
three children. Perhaps they immigrated to the USA? Thanks a

I live in South Texas during the winter and at Lester Prairie,
Minnesota, during the summer. I am looking for information
regarding Ludwig TONN, Jr., and Ludwig TONN, Sr., my grandfather
and great-grandfather, both of whom were born in Province Posen.
Ludwig TONN Jr. was born on 5 April 1866 and died on 26 February
1952 at Lester Prairie, Minnesota. He was married to Ottilie
BENKOWSKI on 26 November 1890 in Minnesota. Ottilie was the
daughter of Michael and Pauline BENKOWSKI, nee HEMSCHROT; Ottilie
was born on 31 December 1870 and died on 1 February 1938 at
Glencoe, Minnesota. Ottilie was born in Province Posen. Ludwig,
Jr. is buried in the cemetery of St. Peter's Lutheran Church,
Bergen township, McLeod county, Minnesota, as is Ottilie. Ludwig
TONN Jr. and Ottilie had one son, Helmuth Herman TONN, my father,
who was born in 1907, died in 1958 and is buried in the Lester
Prairie city cemetery. His wife, Viola Rosella BERGMANN TONN
KROPPEN NARR (my mother) is buried next to him. She had the rare
grief of burying three husbands before she died in 1996. She was
the daughter of John BERGMANN and Agnes KLAUSTERMEIER BERGMANN
EGGERT and was born at Henderson, Minnesota. Ludwig TONN Sr. is
buried in the cemetery of St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Lester
Prairie. I have not found the grave of Ludwig, Sr.'s wife,
but presumably, it is in the same cemetery. Ludwig, Jr.
immigrated to America and Minnesota in the winter of 1882-1883,
joining his older brother August TONN in the Glencoe, McLeod
county Minnesota area. Later Ludwig and August and, I believe
another brother, sent for their parents from Posen. Any help
will be greatly appreciated. I am working on a computerized
collection of my family and currently have about 700 names
listed. Most prominent among those are TONN, KLAUSTERMEIER,
BERGMANN and, in the near future, I will plan to post it on the
Net. If I can be of help to anyone, please let me know.
Blessings.

I am doing research on my grandfather and his parents. He was
born in the Province of Posen. His name was Maximillian Michael
YERZYKOWICZ, born 24 September 1863. We believe he immigrated in
1882 to New York, and was naturalized in 1892 in California.
We also believe he spent some time in Texas as a pattern maker,
jockey and prospector. We called the Federal Court in San
Francisco and they did not have any records on our family. He
married Josphine HENNINGER in 1892 and he became a carpenter and
landscaper. On his death certificate it says his father was
Joseph and his mother was Mary. I was told that in Poland there
is no surnames that start with a Y, so it was probably
JERZYKOWICZ. His sons (my uncles) shortened the surname to
YERZY. All of my uncles, and my father died early, around
30 years old, from bad hearts. I have contacted many Yerzys',
and they are all Jewish, while my grandfather raised his children
Catholic. Our grandmother was a devout Roman Catholic.
