I am researching the whereabouts of Senta MARESCH of Riga, Latvia, relocated to Posen, Warthegau. As many were, the MARESCH Family were ethnic Germans who lived in Latvia. Senta MARESCH was born at Riga, Latvia, on 22 July 1898 and resided on Pulkveza Brieza iela #3 dz.20 at Riga. Her religion was Evangelical Lutheran, and the family worshipped at St. Petri Kirche (or "Petera Baznica" in Latvian). Senta was relocated to Posen, Warthegau (now Poznan, Poland) in 1940 during the relocation of Germans from eastern Europe after the Russo-German Non-Aggression Treaty was signed in 1939. She was unmarried at the time and I do not know when / where she died. This confirmation of this information was obtained from a microfilm copy of the Einwanderungszentralstelle Auftrage housed at the National Archives (Reel #A3342-EWZ53-E029). In the documents, the name was spelled in several different variations: MARESCH, MARISCH, MARSCH for the German, and MARISS, MARESS for the Latvian variants. She would have used the orginal spelling above, despite the variants / errors on the paperwork.

Her parents were Emil Carl Friedrich MARESCH, born in Riga, Latvia, on 20 September 1867 and Wilhelmine Ulrike BARTELS, born in Werro (now Voru, Estonia) on 12 March 1867. I do not know where or when they died, but they were still living in 1938. There is no information on whether they were relocated. She had two sisters: Alma Marija (born Witebsk, November 1901) and Erna (no information or dates). Alma Marija MARESCH was my grandmother. She married Daniel de la Cruz ALTRE, a Filipino US Navy seaman, at Riga at St. Petri Kirche in 1924. They emigrated to the United States in 1937. They had three children, all still living. Alma died in Rochester, New York, in 1978. Erna was married, but no spouse name or when/where she died is known. It is not known if she was relocated as described above as well. If anyone has any information or clues that may aid my research, it would be greatly appreciated. I know Germans were largely purged from Posen after the war, but is there a general area where they were again relocated, or any records which may indicate further movements from Posen after World War II?

I am searching for the place of origin in Posen for my great- grandparents. Julius Herman DRAHEIM was born 12 February 1860 in the Province of Posen. His wife Amelie MARQUARDT was born 28 July 1859 in the Province of Posen. They were married in 1879 in Province of Posen. Two children were born to them in Posen: Fredrick Wilhelm (07 February 1880) and Wilhelmine (15 March 1882). Julius DRAHEIM immigrated to the U. S., arriving in late 1881. I believe he left Posen to avoid being drafted into the army. Amelie and the children arrived in the U.S. in late May 1882. They went directly to Manawa, Wisconsin. There were no relatives there, but there were a lot of people from the Lobsens and Bromberg area of Posen. The only scrap of information that I have been able to find is a place of baptism for Fredrick, but the town is unreadable. It looks like it starts with an H and says West Prussia. The family however always said they were from Province of Posen. I believe the town is near the border of Posen and West Prussia.

I am looking for information on my great-great-grandfather, Theodore BECK (born 1855), who left Birnbaum (now Miedzychod) at age 17 in April 1872 to immigrate to America. I have the ship list of him leaving Hamburg and arriving in New York City. His occupation is listed as "musician" and he settled in Cohoes (near Albany), New York. In city directories he is first listed as a musician, then as a cabinet maker or carpenter. He married Mathilde MAROSKI (or MAROUREKI) later in the 1870s, likely at Cohoes. He appears to have lived with his family in Cohoes (near Albany, New York) in the early 1870s, though he did not travel to America with them and I cannot locate them in 1880. His father's name may have been John. I am seeking information on Theodore while he was living in Posen. Both Theodore and Mathilde appear to be from Posen. They were Catholic, and are buried in a Catholic cemetery at Troy, New York.

I am also looking for information on (and descendants of) his parents, John (Johann) BECK (born about 1824) and Amelia BAUMGARTH (born about 1827). John & Amelia were in America before 1872, though I do not know when. I have Catholic Church records of 7 children born to John and Amelia between 1850 and 1863 at Birnbaum. The occupation of both Theodore and John are listed as "musician" for the first few years after they settled at Cohoes, New York.

Emil Albert PETRICH is said to have been born 18 June 1851 in Providence, Posen, Germany. In 1881 he immigrated to the United States and settled near Varna, Illinois. My first wife's line is thru his brother, Julius Robert PETRICH, born 1 Nov 1867 in Posen. He emigrated in about 1892 and also settled in Varna. It is possible that Julius' birth year was 1857, but his gravestone indicates 1867. Emil moved on to Iowa and then died in North Dakota, while Julius died in Minnesota. The name of Providence was recently given to me by Emil's descendant, and I am trying to find out where it is located. I have long assumed that the family was from Posen in what is now Poland, but this is the first time a subdivision of Posen has been indicated. I don't know if it refers to a village or parish. Providence is English, so perhaps the actual name was different. The family was Lutheran in America. I hope that someone knowing of this parish, or of the PETRICH family from this region, will please contact me.

I have been researching the DOEGE and FABER / FABERT families of Posen. I found the marriage for August Heinrich DOEGE and Wilhelmina FABERT at Kolmar (now Chodziez, POlaaand) in January 1832. August Heinrich DOEGE was born 1 August 1803 in Zachasberg, son of Christopher and Dorothea (TIMM) DOEGE and Wilhelmina FABER was born 12 March 1812 at Zachasberg, daughter of Jacob FABER. Their first son, Johan Leopold DOEGE, was born April 1833 and baptized in Kolmar 28 April 1833. The family left the Kolmar area soon after and settled where? They didn't emigrate to the United States until 1852. August Heinrich Doege's parents were born at "Wolschnetzk" as written in an obituary in the United States for one of his brothers. I have been unable to trace down this town. Any suggestions? I would be most appreciative of any assistance.

HAMILTON, Julie

I am researching the name Warner in Posen. My great-grandfather was Charles Edward Warner born 15 March 1860 at Posen Poland. The family knows nothing of him. They have heard there was a secret concerning him but have no clue what it could be. He married and settled in Clarkson Nebraska USA and surrounding towns. He married Anna BENES and had quite a few children: Josephine, Lillian, Anna, Joseph, Charles, Amy(male), and Rudolph. He left her after after a few years of marriage (enough to have all those children) and died in Omaha, I believe as a pauper. He is buried there. He was a baker by trade but I have no clue what he did after he left Anna to support himself. My aunt has told me he lived in the negro-district in Omaha. I have no idea how tall he was or if he had siblings or anything like that.

Christopher John MARTIN, Sr. (1824-1900) and his wife Caroline Sophie KOEPKE MARTIN (1827-1911), emigrated to the US in 1884 with their youngest child, Augusta Louise MARTIN (1868-1942). Augusta, my grandmother, was born at Lupeschewo, Posen, Germany. All of Augusta's siblings were already established at Blue Earth, Faribault county, Minnesota. We have no information on the family remaining in Posen. Augusta married Gustav Ferdinand ZABEL, who was born at Nicholasdorf, Bukowitz, Germany. They were married in 1890 at Blue Earth, Minnesota. I would be happy to share the information I have.

JORDAN, David L.

My full name is David Lovett JORDAN, born 21 March 1934 at Lyons, New York, to David Carlton Jordan and Ruth Marie MATZELL. My mother, Ruth, was a daughter of John Matzell and Edra Boyce. John Matzell was the son of Julius Matzell and Emma KOTTKE. Julius and Emma immigrated to the US in 1891 from Bartschin, Posen, Prussia. Now Barcin is in western Poland. Julius was born 16 August 1860, most likely in Pomerania or Posen, Prussia and died at Lyons on 23 February 1923. Emma Kottke was born 8 May 1864, most likely in Posen, Prussia. Emma's parents were John Kottke, born 12 February 1827 in Prussia and Louise MEYERS, born in Prussia. Julius and Emma had 2 children while still in Prussia: Helena born in 1887 and Augusta born in 1889. Augusta was born at Bartchin, Posen, Prussia. The rest of their children -- John, Bertha, Clara, William and Amelia -- were all born at Lyons, NY. For years we thought we were the only Matzell family in the USA but I recently discovered another Matzell family in Arizona. Since this name is so unusual both here and apparently around the world, we have a strong desire to research the name more. We suspect that MATZELL may be a change in spelling from METZEL or MATZEL or MARZEL or MARZELL or MATZALL (MOCTZULL ?) Any help you could give us would be appreciated. We have other details on Julius' descendents in America if you are interested. Thank you.

The information that I have so far is that Henry Friedrich KAUS was born on 4 March 1859. His marriage certificate states that he was from Mietschiskr or Mietschiskro, Rgrgsbzrk, Bromberg, Posen, Deutschland. His mother's name was Louisa and his father's name was Friedrich. Henry died on 17 December 1934 in Wellington Twp, Monroe County, Wisconsin. "Daisy" Theresa Marie WOLF was born on 22 April 1865 at Ostera, Germany and died on 10 December 1936 in Wellington township, Monroe county, Wisconsin. She immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1877 at the age of 12. They first settled in Janesville, Wisconsin, then moved to a farm near Mount Tabor, Wisconsin. She married Henry KAUS on November 27, 1890. Her mother's name was Johannatte and her father's name was George. Any information on where to start in Germany / Poland to look for records would be appreciated.

I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Julius MARTINS. I do not know where he was born but he died at Meseritz of Posen of Prussia. He married Maria DOBERSCHUTZ; I do not know where. He had a daughter: Anna MARTINS, born 11 September 1870 at Meseritz, and a son, Albert, but I do not know when or where he was born. Anna MARTINS married William Max RICHTER at New York (USA) on 16 July 1900. William Max RICHTER was born at Berlin, Germany. Any information that I can get will be gratefully received; also I am willing to share the info that I have. Thank you.

I am looking for Ferdinand MILICH and his ancestors. He became a professor of music, was probably born at Liegnitz / Lignitz, and died 12 April 1852 at Fraustadt, Posen. He was married to Anna Juliana SCHÖNBRENNER (SCHOENBRENNER / SCHONBRENNER), Anna Juliana (further data unknown). Their son, Hermann, was born 5 April 1840 at Fraustadt, Posen and married in Luxemburg (Luxembourg) 4 January 1864 to Anna Catharina BEICHT, born 22 December 1844 in Luxemburg. Both died at Coblenz (Koblenz) on the Rhine. The Milich family seems to come from Liegnitz. I have several sources back to the early 16th century, with references to an aristocratic family by the name of MILICH (among them lawyers, medical doctors and pharmacists from Freyburg / Breisgau) and also some "Rath der Kaiserlichen und Königlichen Stadt Lignitz".

I am trying to locate the town from which my great-grandparents emigrated. His name was August SCHUENMANN, born 18 February 1818; he married Henriette SCHUL(T)Z, born 24 September 1829. One child, Minna, could have been born before they emigrated as she is shown as foreign-born on the census ("PRU"). Henriette's place of origin is shown as Posen in the Lutheran church records in Harris County, Texas. In the 1870 Census his entry shows POL as place of origin, while hers is PRU. I estimate the year of emigration as 1861 through the port of Galveston. I am looking for siblings or other relatives as well as city town(s) of origin.

I have been trying to find the town of my ancestors (with not much to go on) for about 20 years now with no luck. My great- grandfather, Johann Gottfried Otto HEINZE, was born on 5 July 1873 at Posen, Wiesenthal, Germany (?) and died on 16 June 1953 at Primghar, Iowa. He was married 22 November 1898 at Badger, South Dakota, to Louise PIEHL. Johann's parents' names were W. Edward HEINZE, born on 13 December 1848 at Posen, Wiesenthal, Germany, and died 19 November 1927 at Richmond, Virginia, and Wilhelmina STOLPE, born 9 April 1848 in Germany (?). She died 22 October 1924 at Fairfield, Virginia. Her parents were Gottfried STOLPE and Caroline REICH.

W. Edward and Wilhelmina HEINZE had 7 children: 1) Adolph,
married Alice FOLLEY; 2) Oscar, married Manda ?; 3) Oswald, never married; 4) Johann, married Louise PIEHL; 5) Agnes, married
William NEWSOME; 6) Hedwig Elizabeth, married Ernst HORST; and 7) Wanda, married Herman WOLF. W. Edward HEINZE had 2 sisters and 1 brother: Henrietta, born 31 August 1839 and married Carl DRETSCH; Elizabeth Johannah, born 12 October 1856 and married August Fred WEISS; and John, born 25 January 1862. All were born at Posen, Wiesenthal, Germany (wherever that is). Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me or steer me in the right direction.

I am trying to locate a church or place for records in the 1902 time period for the locality of Czajaniec / Chojeniec, Poland area. Naturalization and ship list gives Czajaniec as last residence. Wilhelm RETTIG married Julia PLEWKA. This would have been a third marriage for Wilhelm. He was retired from either the Prussian Army or the Kaiser's Army. It is thought to be Kaiser's as I am not sure the Prussians gave pension checks (or could be other way around, not sure). He went to a village to cash his pension check...not sure where...could have been Chojeniec itself. One son remembers Moglinio as his own birthplace but his naturalization record shows Czajaniec (same as shiplist) and I (playing detective) think he remembers that name from a city called Moglinica 5 miles from Czajaniec. Perhaps a clue to where Wilhelm went? Wilhelm cashed his check and bought booze and it being a cold night, drank it on the way home. They found him frozen to death in a snow bank the next morning.

Perhaps there are records that will even show the births of their children: Mary, Max, Frances, Francis, Joseph, Frank Charles, John Walter and Zygmont, for this area of Poland. One son remembers Poznan as a birthplace and one remembers Gnesen and one remembers Szczepanow. But Czajaniec / Chojeniec outnumbers the others. Czajaniec is 23.3 miles west of Lubin. Could records be kept there? Czajaniec is 47.4 miles south of Poznan. I am hoping someone can help me in the next step of this research.

I am searching for further ancestors in Posen: Johann Ferdinand ZAPF, a bricklayer at Rotenstein / Obonik, died 27 June 1851. His parents were: Carl Wilhelm ZAPF at Kowanowko, and Johanna SCHULZ. Ernestine Wilhelmine BLUEGER died 11 March 1849 at Heide Dombrowka. Her parents were Johann BLUEGER, an innkeeper at Heide Dombrowka, who married ? OBORNIK on 30 April 1845, and Erdmute Johanna Justine KLUGE, wjo died at Rozinowo Hauland 7 January 1826. Her parents were innkeeper Johann KLUGE, and Elisabeth HEIMANN or ALTMANN. Thanks for any further information!

I am seeking information on Johann ARNDT and Anna GRUENING (I'm not positive of the spelling of these surnames) who lived at Kaisersfelde, Prussia, in the mid-1800s. I understand this town is now called Dabrowa (Mogilno), and was located within the borders of the province of Posen. Johann and Anna had the following children, who all immigrated to the U.S. in the mid- to late-1800s: Louise ARNDT (1843-1916) married August PRIEBE (1832-1919) on 21 November 1861 in Posen. They settled at Jackson Co., Illinois, around 1885. Herman ARNDT (1852-1925) married Augustine WIELE (1838-1913) about 1876 in Randolph County, Illinois. The couple owned a farm near where Jackson, Perry, and Randolph counties meet. Emma Minna ARNDT (1854-1915) married a Mr. ZUEHLKE, probably about 1878 in Posen. About 1895, when widowed, Emma and her children left Posen and immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri. Emil ARNDT (1861-1925) married Augusta RUSTOW in 1887 in Jackson County, Illinois. The couple later moved to Yamhill County, Oregon. Herman ARNDT and Augustine WIELE were my great-great-grandparents. I am new to genealogical and historical research in this part of the world and would appreciate any constructive suggestions. Thanks.

SEHLKE, Jerry

eMail address: waterbug@ida.net

(Lutheran)

I am attempting to develop a database (and eventually a web site) for members of the SEHLKE family. Therefore, I am looking for any information on any members of the SEHLKE family past or present (which thus far does not seem to be a very large number of people). I presently have a database which contains approximately 240 members of the SEHLKE's; most are from Germany or the United States, though there are a few entries from Chile, South Africa and Spain. I have these folks delineated into approximately 24 groups (some are families and some are individuals).

My direct ancestors, whom I am especially interested in finding more information about, are descendents of Caroline (?) and Jacob SEHLKE. I believe they came to the US sometime in the late 1870's or in 1880 (their oldest grandchild was born in the US in 1881). Jacob SEHLKE, was born in the province of Posen (town unknown), Prussia on 25 July 1817. "He collapsed behind his plow & died suddenly on 2 May 1898..." in Washington County, Texas, USA. Caroline SEHLKE, mother of Wilhelm Sehlke, was born in Posen, Prussia, in about 1820, and died in Washington County, Texas, on 22 February 1885 at the age of about 65 years. I don't have anything that directly proves that Jacob Sehlke was married to Caroline Sehlke, but the dates, locations, fact that they're in the same church etc. indicates to me that they were spouses. I do have church records showing that Caroline was Wilhelm's mother.

Their son, Wilhelm SEHLKE, was born in Posen, Prussia, on 3 November 1855 and died on 5 October 1937 in Washington County Texas. I do not know if he had any other siblings, but I do not have a record of any. Wilhelm was married to Hulda HAUN, who was born in Posen, Prussia, on 1 February 1863 and died in Washington County Texas, on 30 November 1916. Wilhelm and Hulda had 11 children, all of whom were born in Texas. One of their sons, Oscar Julius SEHLKE, was my grandfather. I would appreciate any information on any SEHLKE from any where in the world and I would be interested in any information on Hulda HAUN and her family. Thanks for your assistance!

I am seeking information on my great-great-grandfather, Johann Gottlieb BECK. He married Anna Caroline NELDE from Bnin near Posen on 22 February 1841. I can find no birth, parentage, location or ancestry for Johann Gottlieb. They immigrated to America to Minnesota about 1889. Many records are available for Bnin and the surrounding communities, but none so far have been found for Johann Gottlieb BECK. Any further information will be appreciated.

I'm searching for information about the VORPAHL family from Bromberg. My grandfather, Wilhelm (William) VORPAHL, born 10 June 1858 in Bromberg, emigrated to the US and landed in New York in April 1881. He traveled to Barrington, Illinois, and then to New Salem, North Dakota. His father, William, died 27 October 1874 leaving behind his wife Frederika and three (or four) girls -- Albertina, Louise, Elsie (and maybe Pauline) and possibly one boy -- Rudolph. The remainder of the family emigrated to the US in 1883 on the ship "Oder". They settled in the Chicago area. My great-grandfather was a waiter in Bromberg. His birth and death town is listed in "Pioneers of Morton County, North Dakota" as "Schembocko or Schembocho". Any help in confirming the spelling and location of this town and any information regarding the family will be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for information regarding my paternal grandmother Bertha RECHEIZER (REHEIZER), born in Posen 9 February 1890. Her parents were Friedrich RECHEIZER and Christine KELLER. She had a brother Adolf born 8 December 1884 in Warshau and three known sisters Anna, Henriette (Jetta), and Olga. Adolf, Anna, Bertha, and Jetta emmigrated to the US. Bertha married first Friedrich HOFFMAN and second Karl WALZ. Olga stayed in Germany and married a man named BUCHALSKI. They had a son named Christian, who married Gisela. Christian and Gisela had two children: Iris and Fred. They lived at Wyk auf Foehr.

(Lutheran)

I am researching the origin in Posen of my great-great-great grandfather and great-great grandfather. Great-great-grandfather: Gottlieb MANKE, was born 21 April 1855, imigrated to America on the ship "Republic" from Liverpool to New York City, and arrived 1 June 1874. He came with his sister Emilie. (Germans to America, Vol. 31, pg.194) He was born in Posen, but what city or town is not known. Possibly in Posen, Posen. Great-great-great-grandfather Gottlieb MANKE was born about 1823; and his wife, Augusta PAUL was born 6 January 1823. They married about 1849, and had 2 children: Wilhelmina Carolina, born 8 April 1850, and Julius August, born 3 October 1852. G-g-g-grandfather Gottlieb was killed in a railroad switching accident sometime between 1855 and 1860. As he worked for the railroad, I imagine they lived in a city or town nearby. Possibly there is a newspaper story of the accident which would provide a death date and other family information. Any suggestions where to search for this? After the death of Gottlieb, Augusta married a man named FREIHEIT and they had a daughter named Emilie Ottillia, born 13 July 1862. Freiheit died and the Manke family came to Wisconsin and later to Minnesota. Their religion was Lutheran. Thank you for any information you may have or directions of research you could direct me to.
