BAER, Elizabeth TREICHEL
eMail address: pabaer@sunet.net
My grandfather, Julius TREICHEL, lived in Bromberg, Prussia,
prior to his emigration to the U.S. in 1911. Is there any way of
finding out any information as to when and where he lived while
there? He was born at Shitomir, Wolhynia, Russia 20 June 1887.
I would be grateful for any suggestions for further research.
BISCEVIC, Alen
eMail address: biscevic@netsite.com.br
I am seeking information about Jacob PLACHTE, born in Posen in
1818; died at Varazdin, Croatia in 1888. He was my
great-great-grandfather. There was a story in the family about
some Josef Michael PLACHTE, Kürschnermeister
(Kuerschnermeister) in Posen who was some relation to Jacob,
which I have to find. Josef wrote a last will where he mentioned
Jacob along with others. The will doesn't exist anymore, but was
signed by Notary LEWANDOWSKY in Posen. I would be very grateful
for any information about Josef Michael and his family.
BOROWER, Astrid
Hannover, Germany
eMail address: astrid.borower@privat.kkf.net
(Jewish)
I am searching for any persons named BOROWER in and around Posen.
This family is Jewish. There are not many of them left. In
particular I'm searching for the birthplace of Theodor BOROWER,
husband of Hedwig BOROWER, nee FRIEDENT(H)AL, who were the
parents of Siegfried BOROWER, born at Kempen, Posen (now Kepno)
on 21 July 1891. I am also searching for the names of
Siegfried's brother and sister. And I am looking for the link
between these BOROWER's and those from Buk, Neustadt /
Pinne-Lwowek. Any ideas? Thank you very much.
BRANDT, Hermann-Josef
Wiesbadener Strasse 107, D-47138 Duisburg, GERMANY
eMail address: herjos.brandt@cityweb.de
I am searching for members of the family of my grandmother. Her
father's name was Michael STACHOWIAK. He was born in 1879 or
1880 at Xions, district of Schrimm in the province of Posen.
About 1900 he came to Essen in the Ruhr area, becoming a miner.
Is there anybody having information about members of the family
STACHOWIAK or about the city of Xions? Thank you very much!
Webmaster's Note: We are delighted that, as someone from
Germany, you decided to post a query on this POSRL Research List.
However, may I suggest you also include what you know of the full
name of Michael's wife, perhaps their first generation and maybe
their religion. IMHO it will double the effectiveness of your
posting. You are encouraged to resubmit a full revised, extended
message, as we are not able to take the time to edit any
additions. You are wise to include a postal address -- many
persons have access to web information but cannot respond by
eMail for various reasons. Also, it costs no more for us to post
your same message in Deutsche (if you submit a German language
version), and sometimes it might help your German countrymen.
Microfilm for Xions records exists at the FHL (LDS Family History
Library) at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. Copies of these films are
available for viewing on loan, for a reasonable number of
Deutschmarks, at your nearest Family History Center. While you
do not reveal the religion of this family, I see Xions (Kries
Scrimm) Evangelical Church records exist on 6 microfilms
(1776-1865) and Roman Catholic records there exist on 7
microfilms (1632-1932). Also there are 6 reels of microfilm of
civil registration (1874-1884) which should confirm Michaels'
birth and the names of his parents, even if the religion is not
known.
Please read our web page on how to access microfilm at an FHC and note the list of
known locations for them in united Germany. Please tell Ray your
problem and ask Ray to contact me if you have any difficulty in
locating your nearest FHC. Good luck to you in your
research.

I am trying to find information on my family who came from
Arnswalde, Prussia (Germany). I have found so far that Daniel
RADOE married Sophia LEIPSITE. They lived at Arnswalde and had 5
children: -- August F., who emigrated to the USA in 1855. August
was first married to Henrietta COLDEME, who died after 8 years
leaving 5 children. Then he married Augusta HARDER in 1854. He
immigrated to America in 1855, via Quebec to Watertown,
Wisconsin, where he established a wagonmaker's shop for 2 years
and then bought 80 acres of land in Eaton Township, Brown County,
Wisconsin, which he cleared and farmed. He donated land for the
cemetery. -- Christian F., who emigrated to Africa. -- John, who
died leaving a wife and several children in Prussia. -- Ernest,
who lived in Russia -- Henrietta, who married someone named VELSE
in Prussia. If any one has information on this family, or
suggestions where I might do further search, please let me
know.

Where can I find information on the vessels that sailed from
Stettin in 1890 and 1891? According to several U.S. and New York
State censuses, my grandparents emigrated to America in 1891. It
is rumored that my uncle was born aboard the vessel as it was
traveling to America. If this is true then he would have been
declared a Prussian (German) citizen. My mother, while she was
living, told me that my grandparents came from Stettin. Here is
the information I have about my grandparents and aunts who came
to America in 1890 or 1891: MATZELL, Gustave Julius (or Julius
Gustave), born 16 August 1860 in Prussia. He settled at Lyons,
New York. MATZELL, Emma (nee) KOTTKE, born 8 May 1864 at
Bartschin, Posen, Prussia. MATZELL, Helena, born 24 February
1887 at Bartschin, Posen, Prussia. MATZELL, Augusta, born 1
August 1889 at Bartschin, Posen, Prussia. I would be grateful
for any further information.

I am trying to locate any ancestors of Johann ZELLMER, born 1828,
and Louise Henrietta PRESCHER, born 1832 at Romanshoff. I have
been told that Romanshoff was in Posen, Prussia. I have never
found any reference to it except in some German shiplists, and
also verbally. Johann had a brother named Christian who was born
in 1837 (not verified but pretty sure). He immigrated to the US
with Johann in June 1856 or 1857, and Louise in April of 1857.
Johann and Louise were married and lived in Wisconsin. Johann's
declaration papers from Winnebego county in November 1857 say he
was from Prussia. I am trying to locate his parents and
line.

My wife's grandfather, Fredrick REETZ, was born in Posen, East
Prussia, 8 March 1851. By 1872, he was a 23-year-old shoemaker
when he emigrated from Bremen on a ship of the same name. He
landed at New York 26 February 1872. His destination was Indiana
where he settled at North Judson and married Anna ROSS on 3 March
1874. My wife's maternal great-grandfather was Martin ROSS. He
emigrated from Bremen on the ship "Baltimore" accompanied by his
wife Kaaline (Caroline) nee STOIKE and 2 daughters. They landed
at Baltimore on 19 April 1873. Martin was 45-year-old laborer.
One of his daughters was Anna, who married Fredrick REETZ. They
eventually settled at Bloomer, Wisconsin, where they both died.
I am searching for earlier data related to these two branches of
the family. Thank you.
DITTLOFF, Richard
1092 Bethany Place, Green Bay, Wisconsin 54304-, USA
eMail address: rodbird@gateway.net
My grandparents, Herman and Marie DITTLOFF, and my father Robert
DITTLOFF, were emigrants in 1911 from the German province of
Posen. My father told me he was born in 1903 in a small hamlet
named Koenigbrulesdorf. The way I have spelled it is exactly the
way he spelled it (doesn't mean it is spelled correctly), and
that the English translation was: King Brules Village.
Koenigbrulesdorf is now located in Poland. I have not been able
to identify this hamlet by its Polish name. My grandfather,
Herman Ludwig DITTLOFF, was born at or near Schulitz, and my
grandmother, Maria Valeria ROHRBECK, was born at Johannisthal. I
assume that Koenigbrulesdorf is in the same area. I would be
grateful for any information about these places.

I am looking for the origins of my PASCHKE family. I find them
at the Schokken, Wongrowitz, Posen area starting about 1820.
However the Evangelical Church records do not contain records for
Paschkes before 1820. I find four PASCHKE men, possibly
brothers, with families at Schokken in the 1820s. Their names
were George, Jacob, Gottlieb, and Martin PASCHKE. Martin
PASCHKE'S wife's name was Marie KRUEGER, and both were born about
1800 or slightly before. When my PASCHKE relatives immigrated to
America, they settled first at Port Hope, Huron County,
Michigan, and then some of them moved to Wyandotte, Wayne County,
Michigan. If you come across the name Paschke in research, I
would be interested in knowing about it. Thank you.
GERTH, Dennis
635 Johnson Street, Pulaski, Wisconsin 54162-, USA
eMail address: Dennis4932@aol.com
My great-great-grandfather's name was Stephen GERTH, and his
father's name was Ludwig GERTH. I believe they were both at
Schneidemuhl, Posen, in 1867; they were both painters by trade,
and possibly church painters. Stephen Gerth and his family
immigrated to the U.S. in 1880 and settled in the Milwaukee and
Oshkosh areas in Wisconsin. Stephen GERTH had a son named
Richard (or Rheinhardt). I know he was born at Schneidemuhl on 7
February 1868. Richard ended up at Clintonville, Wisconsin, in
1900, where he had his own painting and decorating business for
30 years. Stephen's wife's name was Paulina FEIRABEND. I would
like to hear from you if you have further information.

My great-great-grandfather, Frederick OTTOMER KRUEGER, was born
23 January 1815 at Schneidemuhl, Posen. All I know of Frederick
is that he was married twice in Posen to 1) ? HAVER and 2) to
Henrietta HAVER. I assume they were sisters. He emigrated to
America and married a third time to Caroline SAUERTIEG, born 3
February 1828 at Uttenauth Bayern (Bavaria). This marriage was
on 13 July 1862 at Milwaukie Wisconsin. He had three children
from the first marriage: Emil, Julius and Emma. One child from
the second marriage, C. W. Krauss; and three from his third
marriage. These children included my great grandmother. I would
very much appreciate any tips on researching his family. Thank
you.
JANUHOWSKI, Edward J.

eMail address: zanej@swbell.net
My paternal grandparents were Stash JANUHOWSKI and Helen
KOCZROWSKI. Stash died in February 1971 and is buried at Chappel
Hill, Texas. Helen died on 19 July 1984 and is buried at Chappel
Hill. My other grandparents were Joe KOLAJAJAK and Maggie
STEGENT. They were from Brenham and Anderson, Texas. Joe died
13 August 1976 and Maggie died on 21 March 1973. I would be
grateful for any information about their ancestors.

My husband's grandfather August F. NAST, was born 8 April 1853 at
Vandsburg (?), Posen, Prussia. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1872
and settled at Winona, Minnesota. He was married 5 February 1885
in St. Martin's Lutheran Church (Winona) to Caroline Wilhelmine
Charlotte MAHLKE. She was born 6 April 1852 at Lobsens (?)
(Augustenof ?), Posen, Prussia. Their children were sons
William, Gustave, and August F. Jr. and daughters Ida and Emma.
The parents of Caroline MAHLKE were Christian MAHLKE and
Henriette STEUCK. Her brother was Carl Mahlke. She immigrated
to the U.S. in 1884. I am searching for the parents of August F.
NAST, his birthplace and also the place of birth of Caroline
MAHLKE. We would also like to know the port they entered the U.
S. and the port they left from. Any information will be
appreciated. Thank you.
NATHAN-MOODY, Sandra Sarah

eMail address: gbachtg@gulftel.com
(Jewish?)
I am researching my great-great-grandfather's origin/birthplace,
etc. Here are the facts I have substantiated from census records,
etc.: (Abraham NATHAN may have had the surname MANASSE somehow in
his name before emigrating to America.) Abraham NATHAN was born
in Prussia in approximately 1840-42. His parents' names are not
listed, but marked "foreign" in the 1860 Federal census for
Crawford county, Georgia. The age of both parents is given as 20
years of age and the father's occupation is listed as
"peddler".
The 1870 Census for the same place lists all the same, except
Abraham NATHAN is now married to a Nancy POWELL and has three
children: Eugenia Nathan (my great-grandmother), Joseph Nathan,
and Maurice Nathan. The 1880 Census deletes Abraham Nathan's
name completely, but does list his wife, Nancy Powell Nathan, the
three children, and several more children. Therefore, I think
Abraham Nathan may have died between 1870-80, but Georgia
kept poor (if any) death records until 1900.
My goal is to find from where he boarded ship for America, and
the exact date, and if he came alone, or what? I am waiting for
a response from my request for searches from the National
Archives in Washington for ship lists, passengers, immigration,
and have filled out many forms and sent fees needed. Not knowing
if my ancestors practiced the Jewish faith or any other religion
or what church they may have attended, makes it hard to ask for a
search in this direction, but the oldest synagogue in Macon (near
Crawford county) may have something in their records; I have
requested information from them. I would appreciate any input,
suggestions or facts from fellow researchers, or perhaps a fellow
descendant of my Abraham NATHAN (or MANASSE) family. Thank you
very much.
NEUMANN, Mrs. Doris
801 Gillaspie Dr. #100, Boulder, Colorado 80303-, USA
eMail address: DorisNeu@aol.com
I am looking for the ancestors of: Julius Herman NEUMANN, born 4
May 1856 at Josephruhe, near Posen. He immigrated to America on
14 March 1881, arrived in Westfield, Wisconsin 7 April 1881. He
married Wilhelmine SCHULZ (born 27 September 1861 at Rosenfelde,
West Prussia) on 22 March 1885. They lived in the Villard /
Alexandria, Minnesota area. Julius died in 1936, Wilhelmine
in 1935. I have a dubious skeleton record of the parents of
Julius; this is all I have: Jacon NEUMANN married Marianna
KUEHL. I could also use information on the ancestors of the
other side of the family: Edwin DRESSEL, born 1858 at Eisfeld,
Germany; died 1935 in Minnesota; married Marie HAMMAN, born 16
August 1864 at Eisfeld, Germany, died 26 December, 1893. Thank
you.

My great-great-grandfather, Ludwig KOERTH, was born 24 January
1819 at Jankendorf, Provinz Posen, Prussia. He married
Wilhelmine ULRICH, born 20 April 1821 at Pruciez Hauland, Provinz
Posen, Prussia. I am trying to find the place where their
children were born, one of which was my great-grandfather, Ludwig
Johann KOERTH, born 3 March 1848, and married to Emilie Sophia
STURM, born 21 September 1848.
My grandfather's (William Fredrich or Fredrich Wilhelm)
confirmation records in a church in Texas say that he was born in
Kammitz, Provinz Posen, on 7 January 1878 and baptised at the
Wongrowitz Evangelical Church of Wongrowitz. I have not been
able to find the records that include him or any of the family.
I have looked in the Church and Civil records of Wongrowitz. I
have also looked at many, many church records around the
Wongrowitz area. Can some one help me in finding the correct
records? I would like to exchange information on these
families.
PEDDE, Giacomo
eMail address: giacpedd@tin.it
The purpose of my research is to identify, around 1700, a Pedde
ancestor who came to Sardinia from Germany, marrying in Sardinia
and starting a family line to which I myself belong.
Unfortunately in Sardinia there is no evidence of any kind for
that period. I believe there may be a connection to Germany,
because both in Westfalia (Lengerich) and in Posen (Bromberg)
Pedde names are found which belong to our line. In Lengerich I
have identified a Bernard PEDDE, born in 1863, but I don't know
the name of his father and grandfather. Among the Bromberg
Peddes, certainly related to those at Lengerich, I found a
Berendt PEDDE, born on February 1751 at Schale, Westfalia, and
his brother, Johan Berendt PEDDE, born on 17 April 1759, also in
Schale. Thank you in advance for any information you may send
me.

My grandfather, Edward RIEMER, was born near Zogorow, Poland in
1885. In 1904 ? he fled to Russia to escape conscription with a
friend named Chris GIEGEL and subsequently immigrated to America
where he homesteaded land in McLean county, North Dakota. He was
Lutheran. My records indicate his father was August RIEMER,
whose father's name was probably Gustav, and his mother was
Tensha MEILENHEIM. Family records indicate that August moved to
Zogorow from the Usteen Colony, Poland, sometime prior to 1885.
Because the Usteen Colony does not appear anywhere, and because
the Germans pronounced the Polish letter "C" as "T", I suspect
the Usteen Colony was in fact the Usciecin community which
existed in the 1800's just 17 kilometers from Zogorow. Usciencin
is located 9 kilometers west of Slupca, Posen Province. Can
anyone help?
WEISS, Karen MANKE

eMail address: JKweiss617@wi.rr.comJKweiss617@wi.rr.com
(Lutheran)
I am researching my great-great-great grandfathers' origins in
Posen. My great-great-grandfather was Gottlieb MANKE, born 21
April 1855. He emigrated on the ship "Republic" from Liverpool
to New York City and arrived 1 June 1874. He came with his
sister Emilie. (Germans to America, Vol. 31, pg. 194) He was
born in Posen, but what city or town is not known. Possibly in
the city of Posen, Posen.
My great-great-great-grandfather was Gottlieb MANKE, born about
1823; and his wife was Augusta PAUL, born 6 January 1823. They
married about 1849, and had 2 children: Wilhelmina Carolina
MANKE, born 8 April 1850, and Julius August MANKE, born 3 October
1852. G-g-g-grandfather Gottlieb was killed in a railroad
switching accident sometime between 1855 and 1860. As he worked
for the railroad, I imagine they lived in a city or town nearby.
Possibly there is a newspaper story of the accident which would
provide a death date and other family information. Any
suggestions where to search for this?
After the death of Gottlieb, Augusta married a man named FREIHEIT
and they had a daughter named Emilie Ottillia, born 13 July 1862.
Freiheit died and the Manke family came to Wisconsin and later to
Minnesota. Their religion was Lutheran. Thank you for any
information you may have or directions of research you could
direct me to.
FHL Microfilm exists for three of the five Luthern
(Evangelisch) churches for the capital city of Posen in the
province of Posen for the 1855 date of your ancestror's birth.
While your location is admittedly uncertain, at least this is a
starter for your research.
WIESE, Mark and Debbie

eMail address: markwies@gte.net or debbie@fbcbryan.org
(Lutheran)
My great-grandfather, Charles WIESE, was born 23 November 1856 in
Posen, Germany. He married Augusta SEEMAN, born 16 April 1856,
also in Posen. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1889 through
Galveston, Texas. He came here with the help of Dr. Julius Zulch
who founded North Zulch. Dr. Zulch apparently brought several
persons with the Wiese surname from the Posen area but they don't
seem to be related. Since all of the Wiese's living in North
Zulch attend the Lutheran church I'm sure it's fair to assume
that Charles also was Lutheran. I would like to know what town
he was born in, his parents' names, and if he had any brothers or
sisters. Any help in how to get to and search church records
will be most helpful. We are just starting this search.
Charles and Augusta WIESE had four children: Ida, Gus, Richard
and Albertina. Gus and Ida married a sister and brother, Elma
WIESE and Albert WIESE. Their parents were Gottlieb W. and Anna
A. WIESE, also from Posen, who arrived around 1889 in New York.
They also came here with the help of Dr. Julius Zulch.
