ARVOT, John
eMail address: ArvoT@aol.com

John Cakars: Thanks for the work that you are doing. Two pieces of information for you -- the LDS FHL has filmed at least one of the parishes on Saaremaa--Kihelkonna (German Kielkond) records going back to about 1689.

Also I have just found a site http://president.ee/Memento/ which gives the names of people arrested, deported, executed etc. by the KGB (and NKVD, MVD, GRU et. al.) in Estonia from 1940 to 1988. The title says Volume 1, but I have not been able to find a vol 2 or higher, so it may be work in progress. Also the site is somewhat unpredictable. It generates lots of 404 errors, but at other times behaves very nicely. So far I have not been able to read the files on location of arrest or detainment. Also the names of the people listed are followed by the father's first name (rarely the mother's), birth data, death, and arrest and trial dates and outcomes. This may provide a way to verify the existence of family (at least until deportation or execution) in the "old country" for some of your queries.

CRUMPTON, Robert
eMail address: Robert.Crumpton@tesco.net

I am trying to trace the genealogy of the following persons: Mihkel POLDMAA was born 1923 at Parnu and left Estonia during World War II, and subsequently lived in the United Kingdom. Hugo PARLIN and his son, Aleksander PARLIN, believed born (year unknown) in the Kohtla Jarve region: both are believed to have been captured by Soviet forces at the end of World War II and sent to a prison camp in Siberia. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

van DIJK, Sylvana
Netherlands
eMail address: culturebank@planet.nl

We are looking for my mothers ,mothers relatives as we don't know any history about my familie. My grandmother Anna KLEIN came to Holland earlier last century. She was the daughter of August KLEIN and Theophilia SALDIGH. She lived in Mondtken or Allenstein (East Prussia). Anna KLEIN was born 24 May 1905. We are looking for any relatives and any information on the family history as my mum is very ill and would like to know something about her family. Can you help us as we don't know how to access the registers from here.

ERNESAKS, Kirsten
eMail address: kernesak@mergetel.com

I have been looking into my family history and was fortunate enough to gain a fair bit about my father. He was Aleksander ERNESAKS, from Tallinn Estonia (born 1911, died 1998), and having been related to Gustav ERNESAKS, we have been able to trace his side. What is more difficult has been finding about my mother's (Regina HINDRUS) ancestors. She was born at Narva in 1920 and her mother's name was Maria HINDRUS. Any information will be appreciated.

HANN, Diane
eMail address: myrtle52@iprimus.com.au

I am interested in finding out any information on my grandfather, Alexander CRYSTAL, born January 1891 at Reval, Estonia. His occupation was labourer in Russia. He left Estonia for London, and then immigrated to Australia in March 1909 via the ship "Salamis". His brother's name was Joanniki. I cant find any thing about his family in Estonia. Any information would be very helpful.

HAUMANN, Herta
Ludwig-Braun-Strasse 45, 36252 Bad Hersfeld, Germany
eMail address: Herta.Haumann@mail.regio.net

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching my husband's German-Baltic family to find a birth-certificate of him or any other sign or document, that my husband was existed before 1950 when he came as a prisoner of war from the UDSSR. Herbert Edward HAUMANN was born 13 September 1922 at Reval (Tallin), Katholic, died 3 September 1987.

Vater: Eduard HAUMANN, Dipl. agr. was born 7 April 1896 at Reval, son of Belarius - Officer Paul HAUMANN (born 1855, died 1938 at Reval). Father Eduard married in March 1920 to Minni, maiden-name BAKER, from Sheffield, Great Britain. He studied in England and came back to Estonia in 1920 and had a management position as a landowner's steward at Mahtra?, Majorik? - that must be 10 or 12 hours to go off with a carriage to Reval. In Reval they had an apartment or house.

The gret-great-grandfather of Eduard was born at Riga in 1790. Herbert HAUMANN'S parents and Sister were arrested at 15 May 1940 in Reval by the GPU - no more sign of them. They had German Nationality. Sorry, I do not have email - please reply by postal mail.

eMail address: liisahobler@hotmail.com

I am looking for any information, record of birth, marriage, possible relatives, etc. of my Estonian ancestors - My father Alfred Roman ROHI (also known as GRASS), born on 6 June 1893 at Rapla. I have his birth certificate but would like a record of his first marriage (about 1918-1920) and any record of children born to that marriage. He emgirated from Estonia in 1927. My grandfather was Jaan ROHI (also known as GRASS) born August 1862, died June 1925. My grandmother Liisa KINGSEPP was born August 1870 and died February 1896. It appears the family lived at Rapla. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

KARJA, Victor
eMail address: karja@snowy.net.au

I am trying to find information and any relatives of Aleskandra TUISK, born in 1912 at Vandra Estonia, the daughter of Anton TUISK and Julis ADAMIS. She left Estonia in about 1934 and immigrated to Australia where she married Aksel KARJA, who had emigrated from Estonia in about 1926. Any assistance would be appreciated.

KOSONEN, Roy
eMail address: yggsson@webtv.net

I wish to research the ancestry of my paternal grandmother, Elisabeth BUTT, who was born in Estonia in 1895. We think her family may have been ethnic German, but we are not certain of this. The family name seems to have been spelled two ways: BUTT / BUETT or PUTT / PUETT. Here is what we know of her genealogy so far: Elisabeth's parents were Johan BUTT (PUTT ?), born in in 1853, and Elisabeth KORMAN (date and place of her birth unknown). Johan's parents were Mart PUTT, born in 1824, and Marri (surname unknown), born in 1825. The men in this lineage seem to have been born in the town formerly known as Alt Fenner, which is today known as Vandra. I do not know for certain where the women were born. Can anyone help me to find out more about these people and their genealogies? Thank you.

LANGEBARTEL, Marita and Heidi
eMail address: kitap@earthlink.net

We are looking for information on our mother, Lilia (or possibly Lilja) MICHELSON, who was born at Narva, Estonia on 29 September 1932. The name Michelson may also be spelled incorrectly ... We do have her Estonian passport, which still has the passport number (066079302). She was sent to Finland in September 1939. Thank you for any information and assistance.

LIIV, Rouland
eMail address: For4Winds@aol.com

I am starting to trace the paternal line of my father and would appreciate hearing from anyone with any information about the surname LIIV. What little I know about my grandfather is that his name was Johannes LIIV, born 19 April 1890 at Tartumaa, Laiuse, Estonia and he died sometime about 1945. He was married to Aliide PARTMAN, from Luganese, about whom I have a lot of information. They had two children; Raimond LIIV and my father, Herbert LIIV, born at Rakvere on 31 August 1925. I am waiting for records of the 'personaalraamat' for the Laiuse Church, through the Reading, England, Family Record Centre, but meanwhile if anyone has any information I should like to hear from them. Incidentally, this is a phenomenal web-site!

LINDEMANN, Eric
eMail address: eric.lindemann@orps.state.ny.us.

I am tracing my father's ancestors and would appreciate any information that could be found for the LINDEMANN, ERIKSON or PUUSEPP families. My grandfather, Gustav Eduard LINDEMANN was born 15 April 1895, at Lilienbach, Russia (a few kilometers east of the Estonian city of Narva). His father was Johan LINDEMANN, and his mother was Eva ERIKSON. Gustav had three or more sisters and one brother. Both Gustav and his brother were drafted into the Imperial Russian army. Gustav returned to Estonia while the brother stayed in Russia and was still alive after the war.

Gustav married Annette PUUSEPP at Narva 9 December 1917, by which time her father, Rein PUUSEPP, had died. Annette was born 3 November 1899, at either Kreenholm (which my father thought) or Jaama (the best guess I can make from the scribbled entry in the marriage register; however, I haven't been able to find Jaama on any map). Later they moved to the Kopli section of Tallinn.

Gustav immigrated to the US in 1924 from Stockholm, Sweden and went to Gleason, Wisconsin, where his sister Anna ANTON lived. Eventually he made it back to New York City where he worked as a carpenter. Gustav died 22 April 1941, Annette died August 1973.

LOIKOW, Ann
eMail address: johnl@erols.com

(Lutheran)

I am searching for information on the family of Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW who was born 12 May, 1880 at Reval (now Tallinn, Estonia) and married Cecilie Margarethe ROOS (date unkown). Cecilie was born 31 October 1883, baptised on 18 March 1901 and died in 1911 at New York City, NY, USA.

His father was Jaan Jannsohn LOIKOW, who was born in Rouma Vallas 13 June 1839 and died in Tallinn 15 September 1903. His mother was Maria von DREIER JANOW LOIKOW, who was born at Paide Liinnas 19 October 1838 and died at Tallinn 15 June 1906. Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW emigrated to the United States in 1907. He had three sisers, Asta, Erna and Agnes LOIKOW who were living in Tallinn as late as 1918 when Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW lost all contact with them.

Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW was a Lutheran and was a master machinist who worked for Steinway & Sons in New York City after he emigrated to the United States. He died 25 March 1952 at Fort Belvoir, Virginia USA. I would like to find out if descendents of any of the three sisters are still living in Estonia and if any one has any other information on the LOIKOW or JANOW or ROOS families.

I'm trying to find more information about my great-grandfather. Andreas BEHRTEL born 25 November 1826 at Arensburg Russia (I'm told this is now known as Kuressaare Estonia. He ran away from home at 14 years old and settled at Rotterdam, Holland an died there in 1897. I haven't any proof that this is true except that he had an accent. I have looked at microfilm and couldn't find anyone with that name or a simular name. Is BEHRTEL or BERTHEL known in Estonia? Thanks.

LUIKMIL, Jo
eMail address: Joannl@tds.net

I am looking for my late husband's ancestors. He (editor's Note: this name was not given but we believe the surname is LUIKMIL) was born at Tallin, Estonia 30 September 1936, the son of Erika SALER, born 1898 at Tallin Estonia. All I know is the parents were divorced in Estonia. I would like any information on the LUIKMIL family. Thank you.

McRAE, Jill
eMail address: jerilderieoz@hotmail.com

My great-grandfather said he was born in Narva, Estonia, on 8 November 1839. He called himself a Russian-Finn on his naturalisation papers in Australia in 1906. I can find no trace of this man, except that I know he arrived at Sydney Australia on the ship "Collwyn" 5 August 1879. Any help will be appreciated.

MARTINSON, Kate
Southampton, United Kingdom
eMail address: kate.martinson@cwcom.net

I am just starting to research my husband's ancestry. His grandfather, Alexander MARTINSON, was born in Estonia in 1894. He was a sailor and settled at Liverpool, England post-1917. I have just learned that his father's name was John (Jaan or Johannes?) and that he was a carpenter. As far as I know, he never left Estonia. I would love to hear from any other Martinson researchers and would be grateful for any tips.

NAFTHAL, Barbara
eMail address: lilactula@mediaone.net

I am researching the surname NAFTHAL. Egbert NAFTHAL and his brother Norbert were born to Bruno NAFTHAL and Elizabeth NYHOLM. Egbert was born 17 August 1919 at Reval, Estonia. I am trying to find out what ethnicity I am, and where we originated.

OJAVEE, Peeter
Canada
eMail address: peeteroja@yahoo.ca

I'm searching for the family history of Endel OJAVEE, born at Kuimetsa Commune, Estonia 18 August 1921 or 1915. His parents were Jaan OJAVEE and Miini OJAVEE nee RAUDMAN. He had one sister, Erve ? and one brother Kalju. He emigrated from Estonia in 1944 and never returned, although he was secretly communicating with his sister. He died in Canada 1987 and never revealed much information to his family. Any information or a point in the right direction for my research would be greatly appreciated.

PALMER, Anna
eMail address: wizkidz@xtra.co.nz

My great-grandfather, Martin ANSO, was born at Loso, Abia, Estonia in 1868. He joined the Russian Navy and eventually immigrated to and settled in New Zealand, where he married Mary Elizabeth KENDRICK in 1898 at Taihape. He became a farmer . I would appreciate any information about him, regarding his family in Estonia. I understand that a female member of his family, possibly his mother, had the christian name of "Kadre".

PAUNIC, Peter N.
eMail address: pnpaunic@yahoo.com

(Lutheran)

I am interested in pursuing my family's genealogy. My grandfather's name was Jaan MUST, and was born in Russia near the Estonian border in the late 1800's. His wife's name was Anna (don't know her maiden name or town of birth). Both were Estonian. To my knowledge, Jaan and Anna MUST had 3 daughters - Leida (my mother, born 16 June 1924 at Viljandi), Linda, and Helmi (or Helgi). Helmi / Helgi died in infancy and Linda passed away when she was 16 years of age. I believe that Anna MUST brought a son, from a previous marriage, into her marriage with JAAN. His name was Oskar NURK, and he disappeared approx. 1934 - ostensibly to enlist in the French Foreign Legion. He served a 5 year tour at Algiers, and apparently re-enlisted for at least another 5 year tour. His last know whereabouts was Sidi bel Abbes. The MUST family worked on an estate just ouside of Viljandi, Estonia. All children were born in that parish and were christened in the Lutheran Church. Leida MUST fled Viljandi in 1944, as the Soviet onslaught drew nearer to Estonia. She left her mother and father (Jaan and Anna), as well as an aunt (Alviine SALU). Alviine SALU was married to Paul SALU, who worked as a conductor for the railway. Paul was subsequently executed by the Soviets.

I have tried to trace my family's history (at least, on my mother's side) but have not had much luck. Numerous records were either confiscated or destroyed by the Soviets, and I haven't been able to locate many close relatives who could be of much help. I would appreciat any suggestions as to how I could attempt to trace my family's genealogy. Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: See the EWZ collection - a 1,900+ microfilm reel collection of records of prepatriated Germans, including the Baltics, covering 1939-1945. Three seminal articles exist in Volume 6 of the FEEFHS Journal and there is some material on itvhere on the FEEFHS website - type EWZ into the website index.

I have a request in searching for my father and it is all the information I have at this time. This is what I know: I am looking for information about my father who was last known to be at Tartu in 1937. My fathers name is Bruno Gustav EMMERICH. He was born at St. Petersburg, Russia 10 July 1908. He arrived at Tartu in 1923 and attended Tartu Saksa Unhistu until 1929 when he started Tartu University, where he graduated in 1937. He married Vera BIBIKOV at Tallinn 17 August 1935. Vera BIBIKOV was born at Rubinsky Russia 9 July 1910. I was born to them in 1937 and at that time was called Juri EMMERICH. The family changed the name EMMERICH to RAUNAM in 1939. Bruno EMMERICH probably had a brother, Gregory EMMERICH, and possibly more. Their fathers name was Georg Alexander EMMERICH and their mothers maiden name was Amelia LIVAT or LIWAT. Any information would be appreciated.
