The Functions of a Pedigree Chart.
The Pedigree Chart shows direct paternal and maternal bloodlines of the person on line 1. The paternal line (Father of #1) begins at line 2. The maternal line (Mother of #1) begins at line 3. Each line contains four generations. The Pedigree Chart is your genealogical road map. Since the Pedigree Chart shows only direct, father-mother ancestry, a "Family Group Record" is used to show each set of parents with their children (see Chapter 5)...

A Pedigree Chart shows direct ancestry of the person on line 1. If you are No. 1, the pedigree is yours. If your spouse is No. 1, the pedigree is his or hers. If your child is No. 1, the pedigree is that child's. Even though in the same family, these three pedigrees are not exactly alike...
