EXCERPTS FROM CHAPTER 2
THE ARMENIAN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
and its
ARMENIAN MICROFILM COLLECTION
(Note: This excerpt does not reflect how the book's 175 pages appear in print.)
The Armenian Genealogical Society (AGS) is a nonprofit, charitable foundation. It was formed
in 1979 by Armenians interested in genealogy but dismayed at the absence of Armenian family-related records available for genealogical research.
The Society's goal has been to locate and microfilm Armenian family-type records of
genealogical value. Most Armenian locations in the world have been visited by an AGS
representative. This includes Armenia, Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Europe, India, the
Middle East and Southeast Asian countries, as well as some former Soviet Union republics.
Microfilm rolls in the Armenian collection contain mostly birth, marriage, and death records. In
addition there are some census, obituary, refuge, tax, hospital, immigrant, voter, donor, cemetery
records, and printed volumes of family histories and genealogies which have been donated to the
AGS by individuals...
With this introduction to the AGS microfilm collection, you will better appreciate the index that
follows. The records are listed alphabetically by country, then city or village. Each locality has
a statement about the record, such as name of church, the language the record is written in, how
many reels of film, and where the original record is kept.
Each section of a reel is listed by type of record (birth, marriage, etc.), and years covered.
Usually an "item number" 1, 2, etc. designates sections as well. Each reel is identified by a film
number shown at the right side with item numbers. This number is used to identify the reel for
filing and renting.
