Before buying a computer for genealogy alone, become familiar with the basics of genealogy... If you then feel ready for a computer, buying a new or used one is strictly a personal choice.

As for genealogy use alone, a bargain-priced 386 may do quite well. A 486 or Pentium may seem marvelous, and the latest model will blow your breath away.

With the advice from a computer-literate friend, economy is worth going for because millions of good computers are being made available by those who upgrade to new ones.
