I am looking for information on my father. His American name: Mike MAMOTH, born 14 July 1895. This was the name he used when he married my mother in 1939. His Albanian name was spelled Mustaf MHMAD on his 'first' marriage application, 27 October 1919. His first wife's name was Frieda HUPKE. My dad's name was also spelled Ibdal MHMAD and his mother's name was ATEA. His wife's father was Fredinand Gottieb HUPKE and his mother was Adalina LA MOND. He nationality could have be Turkish, race as Albanian because Albana was under Turkish rule until 1913. I am interested in knowing more about Monstafa MAHMOUNT who arrived at New York on 17 January or 17 June 1914 on the ship "S.S. Pannonia" from Trieste, where he embarked on 28 May 1914 at the age of about 15 to 18 years of age. There was also another man on the same ship named Monstafa ASSAR. All the information fits the time period, etc. with what I know concerning my dad.

I have all of his records from his first wife to the present with the exception of his records when he work in the Gary, IN Steel mills. I called them but they do not have those records anymore. I have not been able to trace him from New York to Indiana. I know that he changed his name sometime after he married his first wife, Frieda Hupke, on 27 October 1919 as he stated his name as Mustaf Mhmad. When he married my mother in 1939, his name was Mike Mamoth. Can you help me research these two individuals, as they appear to possibly be the same. Do you know of a researcher whom I can hire or could I post my information on someones website?

Our web site has information about the book my wife and I wrote about the Italo-Albanian village where her parents were born: "Falconara: A Family Odyssey." Check: Books by Hal Higdon. You'll find information on "Falconara" and also an excerpt from the book. There is also an article ("Travels in the Mezzogiorno") about our most recent visit Falconara in September 1996.

I am seeking any information about my grandfather Constantine HOTOVA. He was born at Durres, Albania in 1881. He was very well educated and attended various colleges. He spoke about 8 different languages and worked as a interpreter at Ellis Island in New York, USA. Constantine Hotova worked in Washington, DC, USA as secretary of the Albanian council - His death certificate states he was Secretary to Foreign Minister - Albania. My grandfather died in June 1922 at age 40 or 41. I would like to know more about my grandfather. Does he still have any family in Albania? My father - son of Contantine and Victoria Hotova - is still alive living in Bridgeport, CT 06610. My grandmother - Victoria (KOSTA) is also still alive at approximately 96 years of age. If you can provide me with any information about my grandfather or advise me where I can seek information please let me know. It will be very much appreciated.

Webmaster's Note: There are Roman Catholic census of parishes (1856-1857) for the Archidocese of Durazzo (now Durrës, Albania) on 1 reel of microfilm (#191528, items 4 and 5). The text is in Italian, Latin, Turkish and Albanian.

My grandfather's name was Mario PARDO. I know he was born in Monastir (now Bitola Macedonia) and I wanted to know if you have information in this family root. He came first to New York and then tried finding fortune in Mexico City were we all were born. He came to America in 1930 more or less.
Joe Tobias Note: I have no way of knowing this information. I am just a host for this page.....However, you may look in US census reports or archives....it is on the net.....If he came circa 1930...it will be there. I hope you find it. One more place....the Mormons of Utah...have a very extensive geneaological research system....you may want to try there also.

Webmaster's Note: There is now a MONRL (Monastiri Research List) and some Bitola references are or will be available via links from that page. There currently is scant material in Salt Lake City on Albania. There is none on Bitola which actually is in Croatia.

TOBIA, Joseph A.

I was born in New York City in 1942 to Madelina FALLONE TOBIA. Her father, my grandfather, who I knew very well, was born in Barile, Italy on January 27, 1883 to Donato Fallone and Maddalina VALERO. Growing up, I heard my grandfather speak his language to his nieces and cousins. I learned some of the words and would ask him of his homeland.

He said that they had come from Albania where his father had land. His older brother shipped him to the USA when he was young, in order to take the land for himself. That's what he said. I have my grandfather's birth certificate, never thinking it would be helpful. I just keep things; so did he.

He died in 1959 and all we have now are a few relatives through marriage, who are growing older. My uncle Dan, named after his grandfather Donato, married into another GHIEGHIERA family. Ghieghiera is the name we have always known ourselves as. We are sometimes referred to as Albanese. The maiden name of ?'s wife, my aunt Christina is ARNONE.

The name Fallone was a corruption given to my grandfather by ??. On his birth certificate it is spelled FOLLONE. But, I've seen it as FULLONE also. I know my Sicilian side very well; to the 4th generation, but I would like to know who my other relatives are; if any in Albania.

I remember my grandfather dancing; one hand behind his head and the other stretched out to the side. These were rare occasions, but I remember them vividly. I am a musician and have a rapport with Greek music and also mid-eastern music. This tells me that somewhere in my genes there is a remembrance of those past times, far away. I would like to recapture them in some way if I can. Sincerely, Joe Tobia
