1828 Hungarian Land Census: Translation of the Information Available

Background according to Martha Conner* "I am extracting the names of persons listed on microfilm in the 1828 Hungarian Land Census and make them available in book form." Most people don't think her work is that important to them until they see the handwriting she has had to read. Then they realize the real value of her books.

"This is a hobby of our retirement years and it is not a money-making business. Only a small number of books are published for each new County/Magye. Most of my books are for Hungarian counties on the Danube River, except for Szatmar, which was requested by a friend."

"Book #1 was first published by a copy business in 1990. It cost me US$1,500.00 and I still have 50 copies left in boxes the garage. Books #2 and #3 only 50 were published and many are still in boxes in the garage."

"Now I only publish ten or fifteen copies by myself - copying, binding and selling them. It is still expensive. But it is a hobby and I enjoy doing it. My health is poor and this keeps my mind alive. These books are made to help others in the same boat I was in -- readable research material."

"Absolutely NO permission has been granted to use my intellectual property (in the form of these books) in any way shape of form, on or off the Internet to anyone other than for FEEFHS to post this price list and to post my annotations of a county map of Hungary for the purpose of locating each County/Magye." She is upset at the misuse of her copyrighted materials by others.

* From A letter by Martha Remer Conner to FEEFHS dated 7 December 1996 and a telephone call to her on 11 December 1996. This has been updated periodically, most recently from her letter dated 30 June 2000

Future Plans: Her future plans include
She also noted that in addition to the well-known Germanic regions of Hungary, there were German settlements all along the Thiess River in counties to the north of the Banat and Batschka, and finds that nearly all Hungarian counties in 1111828 had Germanic settlers living in them.

She is now looking for someone else who is retired to become involved in continuing her extraction work after she has to retire. Martha will be 75 in July 2000, has the microfilms fffor Books #17-#19 at her Las Vegas FHC already is planning to finish them.

Webmaster's Note: Martha is now age 75. She has chosen to concentrate her remaining energy on producing some additional volumes rather than to answer research questions from others. As she stated to us, "My hobby is different from theirs and they should do their own work". Accordingly Martha does not have an eMail address and her telephone number is unlisted.

She has two current interests - to sell existing copies of her first sixteen books and to complete the work needed to publish the next three books.

In a May 1997 telephone call to this webmaster she stated her considered opinion that there were a significant number of ethnic Germans living in virtually every one of the 70 Counties of Hungary in 1828! She also made available and English translation of the Latin text of Information Available on the 1828 Land Census of Hungary.
