RESOURCE HIGHLIGHT
- Carpatho-Rusyn Knowledge Base
- This site was located and contributed by Peter J Hrycenko
- Interesting list of resources and interesting links to:
- The Internet Public Library.
- The IPL is like going to a real library and using the catalog system to find what you want ... but The IPL catalogs the WWW! For genealogy, you will want to visit, at least, their reference section for Arts and Humanities ==> History ==> European for such diverse topics as Regional/National History, Western Imperialism, WWI, WWII and Modern European/Russian History which has, for example:
- Exhibit Hall although not currently containing exhibits related to East European Genealogy, is worth watching. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it came along in the near future since the IPL promotes and aids "individuals and organizations to create displays and exhibitions for the benefit of the internet community. In addition, we hope that the use of this space can help instruct people in the construction and mounting of similar exhibits."

- The Genetics of Jewish Populations (08/30)
- [Quote] This is a compilation of references to the genetics of Jews, and a brief summary of the current state of our knowledge. The information it gives about the ancestry of Jews is statistical in nature, i.e. it says something about most of the ancestors of most Jews. This means that any particular Jewish family (or more probably any particular small Jewish community) could be an exception. The articles cited here tell a fairly consistent story. Where inconsistencies exist, they seem to be due to an undue emphasis, in earlier work, on characteristics that are adaptive (like blood groups) rather than neutral (for example, the work of Karlin et al. 1979, suggests that Jewish groups have been relatively isolated since the Christian reconquest of Spain in the Middle Ages, rather than the longer timespan indicated by more recent work).
- American Jewish Historical Society Archives (08/30)
- [quote] The American Jewish Historical Society houses approximately 1,000 archival collections. The holdings are divided into two basic categories: Personal, which includes the papers and artifacts of individuals and families, and Institutional, which contains the records of schools, synagogues, benevolent societies, and other organizations related to Jewish life in the Americas. Below is a small sampling of some of the collections the American Jewish Historical Society holds.
- East European FAQ by Warren Blatt (08/30)
- [Quote] This document attempts to provide basic information about
accessing records of genealogical value from Eastern Europe.
- Into The Light by Dmitriy Peysakhov (06/01)
- Mr. Peysakhov has spent 6 years "photographically documenting remnants of Jewish culture and Jewish life in [the] Ukraine. The main reason is the importance of the moment. Currently we witness the next Exodus in the history of our people. More and more Jews are leaving [the] Ukraine and Belarus. These photographs are probably one [of] the last opportunity to document their way of life and Jewish sites in Eastern Europe."
- This site is a must see, with brief introductions about his books and photographic excerpts from all of them. You might even find a photo of one of your living relatives ... there are many individual photos of people and places, particularly in Kiev.
