"Traditional A-Z Index"
to the
Ahnenstammkartei Register
(book by
Thomas K. Edlund)
© copyright 2004 FEEFHS, all rights reserved
BACKGROUND: Die Ahnenstammkartei des
Deutschen Volkes (1,238 microfilm reels) is the largest collection of ethnic
German genealogies extant. (See subject article). The
original collection is at the Deutschstelle für Genealogie in Liepzig Germany
and should be used there by anyone able to visit it. It was placed on FHL
microfilm and thus any reel is now available for use at the 2,900+ Family
History Centers worldwide.
The first 638 microfilm reels consist of one
huge 617 reel A- Z index based on a "modified German phonetic system" as well as
19 reels of associated indexes. It is presented in this same "modified Germanic
phoenetic index" form on pages 3 - 64 of Edlund's book Die Ahnenstammkartei
des Deutschen Volkes - An Introduction and Register
.
It is also
found in the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) under Deutsch
Zentralstelle für Genealogie and as Teil I (638 reels). Teil II (the
Ahnentaflen [AL] manuscripts) are also listed in the FHLC. The summary of the
617 microfilm reels requires about 180 computer pages to list this same
"modified Germanic phoenetic" register, where all like sounding names are
grouped together.
REASONS FOR THIS INDEX: The "modified Germanic
phoenetic" index has proven to be difficult to deal with for many Americans.
Also this register is so large as to preclude effective browsing for a listed
surname. The combination of these reasons have presented a formidable barrier to
the widespread use of this major Germanic genealogy resource.
Therefore
this "traditional A-Z" alphabetical index was created. It places all names
listed in the Edlund Register (and the surname section of FHLC Tiel I) into a
A-Z alphabetical index. It also permits, for the first time, all of the Die
Ahnenstammkartei Register's surnames (with their microfilm references) to be
indexed by the FEEFHS Website Index.

Indexes to "Second Filming" of Die Ahnenstammkartei
des Deutschen Volkes
A second and final filming of pedigrees from
Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes occurred after it was closed to
submittals late in 1993. This second filming represents 19 Microfilms - #1981701
- 1981719) not included in the first filming and thus not in the original
Register as printed in October 1995. These pages are indexed by microfilm number
so as to show the approximate location in the film for a given family pedigree.
They are also separately indexed by surname.
Note: These films were not
included in the 17th edition of the FHLC on CD-ROM (the most recent CD-ROM
catalog available.
