Johannes Bachler was born at Starrkirch, Solothurn, Switzerland
about 1815. He married Anna Maria Mangold from Luter, Alsace
France in 1853. The marriage took place at Aesch, Basel-
landshaft. We are trying to find out the names of his parents.
Johanne emigrated with his wife to America in 1854, to Wayne
County, Michigan. He is my g-g-g-Grandfather. Any information
on his parents would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I am at a crossroads in researching from Switzerland to the
United States that I have
little information regarding. I have 15 generations of
descendants yet no Swiss linkage
beforehand. All I have been able to discern is that Ulrich
BUHLER came to the United
States, was born about 1710 in Switzerland and died after 1778 in
the U.S. Apparently
surnname spellings changed as all descendants are named BEELER
not BUHLER. His wife
was Mary Elizabeth UNKNOWN. Their children were: 1) Unknown
BEELER; 2) Martha
BEELER; 3) George BEELER; 4) Ulrich BEELER; 5) John Valentine
BEELER and 6)
Joseph BEELER. I am the son of Waldean BEELER. I realize it is
very little to begin
with, but just perhaps there is someone researching a lost Ulrich
BUHLER that would like a
connection. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Webmaster Note: Your posting gives no indication if your
research for family
genealogy you has included the submittal of your collection to
the Family History Library
(FHL) in Salt Lake City (No listing for you in the FHLC) or if
you have availed yourself of
its resources using your nearest Family History Center (FHC).
Your surname search should
also include the Buehler and Bühler surname spellings and
perhaps others. The latest
(August 1996) edition of the FHL Calalog (FHLC) shows 20
citations for BUHLER
genealogy with Zurich, St. Gallen and Tschappina connections.
There are also 30
BUEHLER listings with a few lines that go back to 1586 in
Rietheim (Canton Aargau), 1570
in Schwellbrunn (Canton Canton Appenzell and elsewher in Canton
Sankt Gallen) and 1605
in Sigriswil (Canton Bern).
While not giving up on U.S. sources, perhaps it is time to start
reviewing Swiss genealogies
of the principal possible spellings of your surname in
Switzerland, looking for the given
name Ulrich in general and your Ulrich in particular. You might
also check the 3 volume
"Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz" for locations in Switzerland
where you family name
appeared prior to 1710.

I guess the Garlipp family came to the city of Nova Friburgo
Brazil in 1813 from the Swiss canton of Fribourg. I knew about
someone called Horst Garlipp, that may be the first Garlipp in
Brazil. Is there a list of the Swiss imigrants in the year of
1813? I thank you for helping me!

I am looking for information about the family of Jacob MEYER, who
was born 6 May 1806
in Schorren or Thun, Canton Bern, emigrated to the U.S.A. in
1852, and died July 1876 in
the state of Missouri. Before emigrating, Heinrich married
Margaretha Erica IMBODEN
(born 16 May 1813 in Unterseen, Canton Bern; died 15 July 1878 in
the state of
Kansas, U.S.A). Margaretha's parents were Heinrich IMBODEN (born
20 January 1788 in
Unterseen) and Anna MULLER; her grandparents were Heinrich
IMBODEN (born about
1760 in Unterseen) and Anna HASLER. Before emigrating Jacob and
Margaretha had six
children, all born in Schorren or Thun: Margaretha, Jacob,
Frederich, John, Magdalena,
Gottlieb and Anna.

I am submitting this in hopes of finding more on John Joseph
FREITAG the First and John Joseph FREITAG the Second. This
information is from my wife Rosalynd's genealogy. John Joseph
FREITAG I was born about 1780 at Wallenstadt, St. Gallen,
Switzerland. His wife is unknown. His son was John Joseph
FREITAG II, born about 1800 at Wallenstadt, St. Gallen. His wife
was Arsula HUBER, born about 1800 at Wallenstadt, St. Gallen.
Thier son was John Joseph FREITAG III. He was born 24 April 1818
at Wallenstadt, St Gallen, Switzerland and died 13 May 1901 in
Sullivan County, Missouri. He left Switzerland in 1848, sailed
from La Harve, France to New York City, New York. On 22 July 1854
he married Katherina Pfiffer at Jacksonville, Morgan County,
Illinois. Katharina Pfiffer was born 18 July 1821 at Mollis,
Beglingen, Glarus, Switzerland and died 7 February 1890 in
Sullivan County Missouri. I have more on the Pfeffer Family of
the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland.
Their children were John Joseph FREITAG IV (name changed to John
Joseph FRIDAY), born 13 April 1856 at Jacksonville, Morgan
County, Illinois; died 23 January 1948 at Kirksville, Missouri;
Sophia FREITAG (Name changed to Friday); Samuel FREITAG (Name
changed to Friday); Maria Carlina FREITAG (Name changed to
Friday) was born 20 April 1863 in Sullivan County, Missouri, died
10 February 1947 at Novinger, Adair County, Missouri; married 1
January 1888 to Nathaniel SHOOP, born 5 September 1849 in Adair
County, Missouri; died 5 June 1932 at Novinger, Adair County,
Missouri.

Looking for birthplace and ancestors of Johanna ESSIG, born 31
May 1813 in Canton
Aargau. Johanna emmigratred to Germany, then to America. She
arrived in New Orleans
from Havre on 25 Nov 1836. On the ship's roster, she is listed
as from "Baden" but is
within a group of "Swiss" origin passengers named STROH, STENGEL,
KAISER,
PERRIER, MEYER, LEBER, BAHR, BAUMGARTNER, etc. (These people
could be
relatives or former neighbors.) Johanna ESSIG married Johann
WEILBACHER (from
Hochheim, Hesse Nassau, Germany) in St. Clair County Illinois on
7 Sep 1837.

I am researching my GG Grandfather's line. He was Francis BROWN
born 1801 in Canton Bern I believe (our 1860 census has Byrne,
which I think is merely a misspelling). He married a Mary Ann
BENDER from Baden, Switzerland; born 1804 or 1806. They had no
children there as my GGrandfather was born in Lancaster Ohio in
1842. Francis and Mary died at Lancaster Ohio and are buried in
the Elmwood Cemtery at Lancaster. I have a possible lead of
parents for Francis; being his Father possibly was a Laurentii
BRAUN and his Mother a Maria Elisabetha Braun. I was always told
that Francis came from Germany but the census shows Switzerland.
I have no idea how to search in Switzerland and need anyone that
has a Brown in their family from there to see if they can help me
out.
Webmaster's Note: Searching in Switzerland is Marilyn
Wellauer's speciality. You would be wise to start by subscribing
to her Swiss Connections newsletter. There is a town of
Baden in Aargau Canton - separate from the town and province of
Baden in Germany. 9 Topics from Baden Switzerland are on
microfilm at the Family History Library, including Court records
(1805 - 1850). After checking out the topics on the FHLC
(Catalog) on CD-ROM or fiche, you might start by looking at the
Wappenbuch and Bürgerbuch (1429 - 1917) on microfilm 1181807
item 5.

I am a gggreat-granddaughter of Samuel KYBURZ from Oberentfelden,
in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland. He was born 26 June 1810
and immigrated to US in September of 1833. He settled in
Wisconsin and married Rebecca Sophia BARBEN. They traveled over
the Oregon Trail to California settling at Sutter's Fort at
Sacramento in 1846. I am looking for any information on his
family, parents Daniel and Maria (nee BAUMANN, who died in
Switzerland), and a brother and two sisters who also immigrated
to the US with Samuel. Also I am looking for information on
Rebecca's family who are suppose to be from Saanen in the Bernese
highland. Her brother's names were John and Samuel BARBEN. My
family line goes this way: Samuel and Rebecca (BARBEN) KYBURZ,
Maria BALL, Grace ROBERTS, Phoebe MANNING, William R. MANNING,
Jennifer LACEY.
The California Room of the State Library in Sacramento has a
very large "Pioneers" card file and should have consideable other
stuff on Samuel and his family during the '49er gold rush era.
As you probably know there is a town named Kyburz on State route
50 east of Sacramento in the Sierras midway to south Lake Tahoe
which may have been founded by Samuel.
MARTIN, Shirley SCHEE
eMail address: smartin@seark.net
I am looking for the SCHEE / SCHEES surname in Switzerland. My
gggg-grandfather,
James SCHEE was born somewhere in Switzerland 4 December 1805 and
died in 1879 at
Coles Illinois. He was Educated in Genoa, Italy, came to the US
about 1826 and in 1827
married Harriet SAPP (born 14 February 1806 in Delaware, died 15
September 1890). They
lived in Dover, Kent County Deleware and moved to Illinois (Coles
County?) about
1854.
The six children of James SCHEE and Harriett SAPP included John
Manna SCHEE born 11
April 1828 in Dover, Kent County Delaware, died 1888 in Coles,
Illinois. In 1862-1864 he
was in the US Civil War with the 79th Infantry, Company E,
Illinois and became a prisoner
at Andersonville, Georgia. He was a farmer and married Elizabeth
Ellen THOMPSON (born
in Indiana) on 25 August 1851. Others were James SCHEE, Mary
SCHEE, Garrett SCHEE,
William SCHEE and Castilda SCHEE. There were SCHEE's living in
Delaware and PA
prior to the arrival of James SCHEE. I would like to know if he
was related to them. I
would like to contact anyone with the SCHEE surname in
Switzerland or other
countries.

( ? , Brethren)
There were two persons named Johannes Peter WEITNAUR who were
first cousins. I don't know which was my direct ancestor. It
was either 1) the Johannes Peter WEITNAUR who was the son of
Johannes Peter WEITNAUR, Senior [baptised 1640 at Basel
Switzerland and Elizabeth SCHERER called Philipert[baptized 1644
at Basel], or 2) the son of Johannes Friedrich WEITNAUR [baptized
1647] and Ursula HEINRICH-PETRI [baptized 1650 at Basel].
Johannes Peter Weitnaur was the grandson of Johannes Adelberg
Weitnaur [not "Adelbert"; baptized 1611 at Basel] and Anna Maria
STORCH [she was not born at Basel]. The family is found in
Pennsylvania by August of 1725 when Heinrich SCHNEIDER made his
will in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
Johannes Peter Weitnaur died in the winter of 1733 in Oley
Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. His widow, Catherine
(Schneider) Weitnaur died in 1742 at the Ephrata Cloister,
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Ephrata Cloister was a
Brethren Cloister, but the family did not become Brethren until
after the death of Peter Weitnaur, as they were living in Oley
Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
The children of Peter and Catherine (Schneider) Weitnaur were:
Heinrich born 1717 in Germany or Switzerland, died 1792 Lincoln
County, North Carolina; Barbara born 1708-1718 in Switzerland or
Germany; Johannes Peter born circa 1719; Triffiana; Jacob and
Isaac. I can not locate that family after the move into Germany.
I would be grateful for any help.

My great-Grandmother Mary FARON was born 17 January 1874 in Mount
Eaton, Wayne
County Ohio and adopted in May 1874. Her adopted name became
Inez YODER. Inez had
a natural sister, Amie Adelie FARON, who was born in Switzerland
on 6 April 1866. For
some reason, Amie (known as Adelie) was sent back to Switzerland.
Exactly when is not
known but this occurred at a young age. Adelie married Jules
Edouard JEANRENAUD and
had three known children: one child died before 1923; Lina
Aliette was born 12 August 1888
in Tavannes, Canton of Berne Switzerland and married Alphonse
SPAHN; Germaine married
a man with the first name Robert (surname unknown). I would like
to locate the descendants
of my Great-Grandmother's sister.

I am seeking information on origins of Mennonite minister Henry
or Heinrich Heistand, born about 1709, who may have emigrated
from or to Zurich, Switzerland. The surname variations include
HEISTANDT and HEISTON. He married about 1732 (wife unknown) and
arrived first in Pennsylvania and later moved on to Orange (now
Page) County, Virginia in the U.S., where he lived in 1743. The
information sought includes place of birth, and name of parents
and wife.

I am searching the families THROENLIN and ECKHLAUER who stayed in
Switzerland,
probably not far from the Rhine river, during the French
occupation in the South of the
Black Forest at the beginning of the 17th century. Ulrich
Throenlin and Ursula Eckhlauerin
are born on the Swiss side of the Rhine between 1630 and 1650.
Their parents probably
came from the Hauensteinerland in the South of the Black
Forest.
I am looking for someone who knows the history of the
Hauensteinerland and the other side of the Rhine especially in
the 17th century. I would like to know more about the
Swiss villages (Leibstadt, Wil, Sansingen, Sulz, Laufenburg,
etc....) where some refugees of the Black-Forest have stayed for
a short time in the beginning of the 17th century.

Laufenburg...
I am also searching for the family of Abraham HALTER and his wife
Agatha. They came from Switzerland, probably from the Canton of
Fribourg (German = Ychtland; French = Singine) - southwest of the
Canton of Bern - in the 17th century. They emigrated to
Schirrhein, Alsace between 1650 and 1689. Abraham HALTER died at
Schirrhein in 1689. His wife Agatha died in 1698. They had 9
children. Their daughter Maria was married before 1690 to
Mathias WEBER from Tafers in Ychtland. I would like to know more
about the families HALTER, in the Swiss villages around Tafers in
the 17th century. Tafers and the river Singine (called Sense in
German) is the area that roughly corresponds to the German
speaking part of Canton Fribourg.

I am seeking information about the following individuals and
their ancestors, siblings and children: SUTER, Kaspar, born 1817,
probably in Kanton Aargau (maybe in Aarau or Graenichen) and he
was still alive in Switzerland in 1890. He married Susannah,
possbily also SUTER maiden name; born ?, died 1856. Thier
children (the only ones I know of):
i) Christopher, born 15 August 1845 in Aarau, Aargau; died 25
August 1907 at Sacramento California. He went first to Zuerich
and immigrated to Kansas about 1865. He married A.M. Sophia
BOLLINGER at St. Louis, Missouri October 1865. He migrated to
Sacramento, California February 1876. Two children are Oscar
and Ida.
ii) Susannah, born about 1853. Susannah also immigrated to
America, date unknown. She died at Sacramento in 1880. She may
have married ? TIELMAN. She may have been known as Susan or
Annie in Sacramento. Please send me any information you might
have.

I know that there are at least two spellings different from the
original URWYLER. The two Americanized versions are URWILLER and
URWILER. This is everything I have of our origins in
Switzerland. We don't have all the dates and places. As you can
see, I'm missing quite a bit of information. I have written some
URWILER's and they had been told by their family that their name
was once spelled URWYLER. However, they have lost most of their
family history. I need to find out the missing links between the
three surnames URWYLER, URWILLER, and URWILER.
1. Hans URWYLER
2. Hans Urwyler married Verena LERCH
3. Jakob Urwyler 1713- married Maria MATTER
4. Johann Jakob Urwyler 1750-1836 married Ursula MAHLETHALER
1787-
5. Jakob Urwyler, born 15 February 1778 in Switzerland; married
22 July 1803; died January 4, 1825. He married Elisabeth WIDMER
born 17 October 1779.
6a. Jakob Urwyler, born 4 July 1809 at Brittnau, Switzerland;
married 22 October 1830, died at Sodtown, Nebraska U.S.A. 23
December 1891; married Elisabeth LERCH; born 25 September 1810 at
Brittnau, Switzerland; died at Sodtown, Nebraska, 19 June 1884
7a. Samuel URWILLER born 28 July 1843 at Brittnau, Switerland -
Married in Marshall, Michigan, U.S - Died in Sodtown, NE, U.S. 14
February 1935; married Elizabeth HAZELTON; married Emma VOUTH
BLUSS.
8a. Fredrick Thomas Urwiller, born 23 October 1870 at Marshall
Michigan; married 24 January 1891 at Nebraska City, Nebraska,
died 5 April 1937 at Sodtown, Nebraska; married Harriet E.
George
8b. Louis Jacob Urwiller, born 10 March 1869 at Detroit,
Michigan; died 7 February 1876.
8c. Charles Samuel Urwiller, born 21 April 1874 at Marshall,
Michigan; died 10 November 1947; married Elizabeth HANOVER.
8d. Elizabeth M. Urwiller, born 2 February 1877 at Marshall,
Michigan; died 12 December 1968; married Jacob RICHARDSON.
8e. Jessie Louis Urwiller, born 27 December 1879 in Buffalo
County, Nebraska; died 3 November 1950; married Albion
GEORGE.
7b. Jacob Urwiller, born 8 February 1840 at Brittnau,
Switzerland; married 17 April 1866 at Marshall, Michigan; died at
Sodtown, Nebraska 7 January 1927; married Rosina STUBER.
7c. Friedrich Urwiller, born 24 May 1849 at Brittanu,
Switzerland; married 1 January 1873 at Marshall, Michigan; died
at Sodtown, Nebraska 17 July 1927; married Navada PAUL.
7d. Jakob Urwiller, born 27 May 1831 at Brittnau, Switzerland;
died 31 December 1832.
7e. Jakob Urwiller, born 7 January 1833 at Brittnau,
Switzerland; died 14 August 1837.
7f. Elisabeth Urwiller, born 14 January 1838 at Brittnau,
Switzerland; died 31 August 1838.
7g. Samuel Urwiller, born 4 June 1835 at Brittnau, Switzerland;
died 27 July 1844.
6b. Johann Jakob Urwyler, born 22 January 1804; died 23 April
1880.
6c. Elisabeth Urwyler, born 7 May 1815.
6d. Anna Barbara Urwyler, born 1 November 1820.
It would appear that the generation to first come to America was
generation 6 - Jakob & Elisabeth (Lerch) Urwyler. That is also
the generation where the change in surname spelling occurred
(probably to Americanize it.) #7 Samuel Urwiller is my
great-great-great-grandfather. I'm generation #12. I do
appreciate any and all help anyone can provide.
